In this paper, an innovative hybridized deep learning framework (EN-CNN) is presented for image noise reduction where the noise originates from heterogeneous sources. More specifically, EN-CNN is applied to the benchmark natural images affected by a mixture of additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) and impulsive noise (IN). Reduction of mixed noise (AWGN and IN) is relatively more involved as compared to removing simply one type of noise. In fact, mitigating the impact of a mixture of multiple noise types becomes exceedingly challenging due to simultaneous presence of different noise statistics. Although, various effective deep learning approaches such as [1] and the classical state-of-the-art approaches like WNNM [2] have been used to suppress AWGN noise only, the same techniques are not suitable in case of mixed noise. In this context, EN-CNN can not only infer changed noise statistics but can also effectively eliminate residual noise. Firstly, EN-CNN employs the classical method of neighborhood filtering followed by non-local low rank estimation to respectively reduce IN noise and estimate the residual noise characteristics after reducing IN noise. As a result of this step, we obtain a pre-processed image with residual noise statistics. Secondly, convolutional neural network (CNN) is applied to the pre-processed image based on the noise statistics inferred in the first step. This two pronged strategy, in conjunction with the deep learning mechanism, effectively handles the mixed noise suppression. As a result, the suggested framework yields promising results as compared to various state-of-the-art approaches.

Hybrid Deep Learning Framework for Reduction of Mixed Noise Via Low Rank Noise Estimation

In highly compressed images, i.e. quality factor q ≤ 10, JPEG compression causes severe compression artifacts including blocking, banding, ringing and color distortion. The compression artifacts seriously degrade image quality, which is not conducive to subsequent tasks, such as object detection and semantic segmentation. In this paper, we propose a weakly connected dense generative adversarial network for artifacts removal of highly compressed images, named WCDGAN. WCDGAN has three main ingredients of mixed convolution, weakly connected dense block (WCDB), and mixed attention. In the loss function, we add a perceptual loss to generate photo-realistic images with compression artifact removal. Experimental results show that WCDGAN successfully removes compression artifacts and produces sharp edges, clear textures and vivid colors even in highly compressed images. Moreover, WCDGAN outperforms state-of-the-art methods for compression artifact removal in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM).

WCDGAN: Weakly Connected Dense Generative Adversarial Network for Artifact Removal of Highly Compressed Images

To solve the issues with conventional level set segmentation algorithms, which are sensitive to the initial contours and less noise-resistant, a segmentation model based on the coupling of texture information and structural information is developed. In this model, a rotation invariant mask produced by fractional-order differentiation is used to first describe the image's global information. Then, the power function of the energy generalization function is solved by applying factorization theory, and for each pixel of the image, not only its information but also its surrounding pixel information is taken into account and integrated into the energy generalization function via weight scaling. At the same time, the L2 norm of the fractional-order image and the difference from the fitted image are used to generate the energy generalization function of the model. The final results of this study demonstrate that the proposed model achieved a better segmentation performance than the current active contour models in terms of robustness to Gaussian noise and pretzel noise, as well as the segmentation accuracy and algorithm running time. These results were obtained in synthetic images, real images, and natural images.

The aim of this paper is to introduce a novel similarity measure using fractional-order derivative for patch comparison in low-rank image denoising approach. Recently, several outstanding low-rank image denoising algorithms have been proposed. However, these methods have limitations in the sense that certain irrelevant patches can be selected during patch comparison. These undesired patches affect singular values shrinkage and aggregation phases of these approaches. Thus, the fine details and edges of denoised image may not be well preserved. To address this issue, a novel method is proposed in which gradient information is injected in patch comparison using discretized fractional-order derivatives. The advantages of proposed approach are twofold: firstly, the patch comparison becomes more reliable by combining intensity and gradient information; secondly, the fractional-order gradient provides an additional degree of freedom to quantify the gradient information for patch comparison in an efficient way. In addition, the proposed algorithm estimates noise level using geometric details encoded in the image patches. The noise estimation strategy may help in terminating the iterative low-rank approximation. Experimental results on test images reveal that the proposed method performs better than several outstanding algorithms, specifically, in the presence of severe noise levels.
