The Social Psychology of Organizations.

The form of organizational technology (long-linked vs. intensive) is examined here as a contingency factor in assessing the effectiveness of health-care clinics. The effects of technology were explored in a case-study of two clinics each reflecting a different technology form. The analyses suggested that the differences found in the clinics’ effectiveness can be attributed to their different forms (long-linked vs. intensive) of technology. It appeared that the intensive form of technology had different implications for clinic effectiveness than did the long linked form. The analyses also suggested that the key factor in these different forms to impact clinics’ effectiveness was the differential involvement (low in the long-linked and high in the intensive) of patients in the production of the clinics’ services.
