On the crystallization of graphite from liquid iron–carbon–silicon melts
TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that most forms of graphite grow radially from a common center, most of the time as foliated dendrites (see Figure 1).

On the stable eutectic solidification of iron–carbon–silicon alloys
TL;DR: In this paper, the growth and morphology of the stable eutectic grains during early solidification of continuous cooled Fe-C-Si alloys were investigated using scanning electron microscopy.

Effect of Antimony and Cerium on the Formation of Chunky Graphite during Solidification of Heavy-Section Castings of Near-Eutectic Spheroidal Graphite Irons
TL;DR: In this paper, the formation of chunky graphite (CHG) in heavy-section castings of spheroidal graphite cast irons was investigated. But the results of the analysis were limited to four large cubic blocks 30 cm in size, and the results showed that CHG formation was associated with increased recalescence during the bulk eutectic reaction.

Reexamination of crystal growth theory of graphite in iron-carbon alloys
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscopy on deep-etched interrupted solidification (quenched) specimens to reveal the morphology of graphite growing in contact with the liquid at the very beginning of solidification.

Effect of mould inoculation on formation of chunky graphite in heavy section spheroidal graphite cast iron parts
Iker Asenjo,Peio Larrañaga,Jon Sertucha,Ramon Suarez,J. M. Gomez,Inaki Ferrer,Jacques Lacaze +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of mould inoculation on chunky graphite appearance during solidification of nodular irons was investigated and it was shown that mold inoculation increases the risk of graphite formation in heavy sections.
