Objective: To study the phytochemical and biological properties (antioxidant, anthelmintic and thrombolytic) of methanolic extracts of Enhydra fluctuans Lour., a plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Methods: The phytochemical evaluation was carried out by qualitative analysis. In vitro antioxidant activity of extract was studied using free radical scavenging assay, ability of reduction, total phenol and total flavonoid contents determination assays. The anthelmintic activity was determined using paralysis and death time of Pheretima posthuma (earthworm) and thrombolytic activity by clot disruption assay. Results: The phytochemical evaluation showed significant presence of flavonoids, triterpenes, carbohydrate, reducing sugars, saponins, phenols, diterpenes, protein and tannin. The antioxidant activity was found significant (IC50=(135.20依0.56) µg/mL) as compared to ascorbic acid ((130.00±0.76) µg/mL). The reducing power was increased with concentration. Total phenol and total flavonoid contents were (153.08依0.38) mg/mL and (172.04依0.56) mg/mL respectively. The paralysis and death time of earthworms for different concentrations of extract were determined and compared with albendazole. The results showed that 10 mg/mL of the crude extract had similar effect with albendazole. Additionally, the crude extract showed a concentration depended relationship with its anthelmintic property. The clot lysis activity of crude extract was compared to the standard streptokinase's clot lysis (40.13%) activity and found significant (31%). Conclusions: The study proves that the crude methanolic extract of Enhydra fluctuans Lour. has significant antioxidant, anthelmintic and thrombolytic activity containing wide range of phytochemicals.

Increased resistance and side effects of synthetic drugs has led to the exploration of bioactive compounds and drug development from plants. Enhydra fluctuans Lour. is an common edible plant, ethnobotanically very popular in India and parts of south- east Asia and often is used for its medicinal properties. Studies reveal that this plant has many biomedical properties like anti- microbial, anti- diarrhoeal, anti- oxidant, anti- cancer, CNS- depressant, neuro- protective, cyto- protective, thrombolytic activities. These properties can be attributed to the presence of pharmacologically active compounds like β- carotene, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, saponins, sesquiterpene lactones, phytosterols etc. The pharmacological potential infer that this plant can have potential anti- cancer properties and should be extensively investigated for pharmaceutical purposes. This review gives a comprehensive account of all the reports available about Enhydra fluctuans it would help to predict ways to future investigations regarding new compounds and their potential medicinal properties.

A review on phytochemical constituents and pharmacological properties of Enhydra fluctuans Lour

To provide safe, healthy and nutritious source of food for poor income group and undernourished population is still a big challenge for our country. On the other hand, there is an increasing demand of antioxidant, calories and protein rich quality, healthy, nutritious food by the health conscious modern people. Underutilized vegetable crops are important source of valuable nutritional and medicinal component. These are cheaper and affordable than the exotic imports. Exploitation of these wild resources is an important way of income and food, especially for the poor farmers who are also underemployed.

Nutritional and Medicinal Value of Some Underutilized Vegetable Crops of North East India- A Review

: This study aimed to assess the protective effect of the n-hexane fraction of Enhydra fluctuans aerial against insulitis in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. A total of 30 male rats (five normal rats and 25 diabetic rats) were assigned to one of six groups (n = 5/groups): group 1 is the normal rat group (GN) was without treatment, group 2 is diabetic rat was given 0.5% Na-CMC (G0), group 3 is diabetic rat was given glibenclamide 0.45 mg/kg body weight (G1), group 4, 5, and 6 are diabetic rats were given n-hexane fraction doses of 57.03, 114.06, and 171.09 mg/kg body weight respectively. The experiment was carried out over 21 days. Blood glucose was measured on the first and latest day of treatment. Furthermore, insulin levels, the number of pancreatic β-cell, and degrees of insulitis were evaluated. The n-hexane fraction reduced blood glucose, increased insulin levels, and increased the number of pancreatic β-cell significantly in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The administration of the n-hexane fraction at a dose of 57.03 mg/kg body weight exerted the best protective effect against insulitis and promoted regeneration of the islet of Langerhans. The results of this study indicate that this herb could effectively reduce insulitis and promote the regeneration of pancreatic tissue under diabetes. Thus, E. fluctuans has the potential to be developed as a novel diabetes drug.

Enhydra fluctuans Lour, a tropical herb, commonly known as helencha or harkuch,belonging to family Asteraceae, is gaining lot of importance for its therapeutic potentials. This is an edible semi-aquatic herbaceous vegetable plant with serrate leaves, grows commonly all over the country. The plant is a prostrate herb with opposite sessile, linear oblong leaves, 1–3 inches long. The herb is quite glabrous sometimes pubescent glandular. Stems are 0.3–0.6m, elongated simple or divaricating rooting at the nodes. The leaves are slightly bitter, cure inflammation, skin diseases, laxative, bronchitis, nervous affection, leucoderma, biliousness and good in small pox. The plant possesses nutritional value including-β-carotene, saponins, cholesterol, glucoside, enhydrin and so on. It is reported that plant possesses Antioxidant, Hepatoprotective, CNS Depressant, Analgesic and Antidiarrheal activity. The leaves extract of Enhydra fluctuans is an effective antibacterial against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus luteus. This review aims at compiling the potential benefits of Enhydra fluctuans Lour based on its pharmacological activity.
