AbstractThis study explored communication apprehension at the beginning and end of a business communication course. Nearly 200 students completed pre-class and post-class assessments of their communication apprehension in speech situations, class discussions, and group discussions. This study showed that a single business communication course significantly reduces oral communication apprehension. Yet, many students still hold communication apprehension at the end of the class. Thus, an approach that is strategic and program long could better address communication apprehension. The confidence gap between women and men is the most striking aspect of this study, with women possessing much more communication apprehension. Business educators should consider interventions to reduce or eliminate this gap.Keywords: Communication apprehensionoral communicationbusiness communicationcommunications 

Overcoming oral communication apprehension: A call for a renewed focus on confidence building in business education

This study investigates the communication skills expected of recent construction engineering graduates as portrayed in job ads and conveyed by employers. A content analysis of 100 job ads showed that teamwork, leadership, and interpersonal communication skills were the specific categories of communication skills listed most frequently. Subsequent interviews with 11 employers showed that although they considered the written communication skills of recent college graduates as sufficient, they found that many recent graduates had insufficient skills in assertiveness, email communication, relationship building, and audience adaptation, indicating that additional coursework or assignments in oral communication skills would benefit construction engineering majors. 

Which Communication Skills Do I Need? A Multimethod Study of Communication Needs in Construction Engineering

This special issue is an invitation to study business communication with a positive perspective. For decades, researchers in business communication have predominantly explored the problems, challenges, and issues facing organizations and leadership communication. Whether those include exploring the nature of crisis (e.g, Waller & Iluzada), communication responses and outcomes of sexual harassment (e.g., Mills & Scudder), or the role of internal communication in culture creation (e.g., Yue, Men, & Ferguson), researchers’ theoretical and methodological lenses are often used to critique, point to, or reveal the problematic nature of business life. In this special issue, we want to celebrate the extraordinary, what works well in organizations, and the nature of positive communication and its inspirational force for people and organizations. Specifically, we argue that Positive Communication Scholarship should inspire better practice. To support this endeavor, we begin with a brief history of the positive communication movement in the field of communication. Then, using this history, we define positive communication scholarship and describe what it will help our discipline accomplish. We also introduce the articles featured in this special issue, advance an agenda for future research, and end with a call to action.

A World of Possibilities: Introducing Positive Communication Scholarship to Inspire Better Business and Organizational Communication Research

This study aims to explore the variances in communication behaviours among undergraduate students within the social-cultural context. A total of 104 participants (40 lecturers and six managers) were selected from two universities, namely Hue University of Science and Hue University of Education. The collected data was subsequently evaluated. The findings suggest that there are slight differences between male and female students. This study highlights significant differences in involvement among Kinh ethnic students and students from other ethnic groups. Furthermore, the geographical location and sociocultural environment of a region significantly influence the communication behaviors and preferences of students. Students demonstrate higher mean scores in diverse communication activities as compared to lecturers. The results highlight the significance of gender, ethnicity, geographic location and student status in influencing students' participation in communication. Recognizing and addressing these differences can help in the development of effective communication strategies, the development of inclusive environments and the encouragement of positive social interactions among various groups of students. The implications for students' well-being, academic success and intercultural competency might be explored in more detail in further studies by examining the fundamental variables that lead to these differences. 

Communication activities of students with the social cultural environment during floods: A case study in Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam

Prior research has shown that stress and anxiety are commonly reported by autistic adults in social-communication situations in their personal and professional lives. Yet, little research exists to demonstrate the extent and nature of communication apprehension in the workplace among autistic professionals. This survey study of 324 autistic professionals showed that autistic professionals experience high communication apprehension, particularly in comparison to the general population. As communication situations become less predictable, autistic professionals tended to disproportionately experience higher communication apprehension. 

Communication Apprehension Among Autistic Professionals

Communication apprehension can lead to professional challenges for individuals, teams, and organizations. This is the first study of communication apprehension that involved a randomized national survey of working adults in the United States and captured broad representation in terms of age, gender, race/ethnicity, managerial status, and other factors. The study showed that communication apprehension is common, including in group discussions, meetings, interpersonal situations, and public speaking. It is significantly more common among early-career professionals, women, introverted professionals, and professionals with anxiety. Interpersonal situations appear to be the situations in which contemporary professionals are most likely to experience high communication apprehension. This study suggests more attention is needed to address communication apprehension in interpersonal and group situations. It also frames communication apprehension as a matter of inclusion and team performance.
