Nanotechnology, contrary to its name, has massively revolutionized industries around the world. This paper predominantly deals with data regarding the applications of nanotechnology in the modernization of several industries. A comprehensive research strategy is adopted to incorporate the latest data driven from major science platforms. Resultantly, a broad-spectrum overview is presented which comprises the diverse applications of nanotechnology in modern industries. This study reveals that nanotechnology is not limited to research labs or small-scale manufacturing units of nanomedicine, but instead has taken a major share in different industries. Companies around the world are now trying to make their innovations more efficient in terms of structuring, working, and designing outlook and productivity by taking advantage of nanotechnology. From small-scale manufacturing and processing units such as those in agriculture, food, and medicine industries to larger-scale production units such as those operating in industries of automobiles, civil engineering, and environmental management, nanotechnology has manifested the modernization of almost every industrial domain on a global scale. With pronounced cooperation among researchers, industrialists, scientists, technologists, environmentalists, and educationists, the more sustainable development of nano-based industries can be predicted in the future.

Nanotechnology: A Revolution in Modern Industry

The fashion industry is now in the eye of the storm for what concerns sustainability because of the enormous impact that such a business area has on the environment. To exploit the full potential for circular economy implementation, the fashion industry requires urgent changes adapting much more conscientious business practices, driving consumers to change their perceptions and behaviours towards circular products and services. The renunciation of greenwashing practices and the use of strategy focused on regaining consumer’s trust will increase the positive sentiment towards the fashion brands. This work demonstrates to what extent greenwashing may jeopardise the fashion industry in addressing challenges related to the implementation of more sustainable circular economy in the context of designing with intention of recycle, reduction of by-products, lower energy consumption and wise purchase habits. This study provides guides for the fashion brands about the risks and gains related to the greenwashing practices and sustainable fashion industry. This study sketches also future research opportunities in more sustainable holistic approach of a products’ life cycle and how this can be translated into clear, transparent, or reliable certification schemes to prevent the misleading and dishonest marketing strategies helping the consumers to make a responsible choice.

Study of the bending properties of variable stiffness chain mail fabrics

Variable stiffness fabrics have gained considerable attention due to their advantages in repeatability, deformability, and controllability of stiffness. However, existing variable stiffness fabrics are limited in fitting complex geometrical surfaces and understanding their dynamic mechanical response. This study aims to address these gaps through experimental testing and numerical simulations. Three fabric samples with different single-cell particles were fabricated to investigate the low-velocity impact response of variable stiffness chain mail fabrics. Impact tests were conducted on the fabrics using small balls at three velocities (2.5m/s, 3.8m/s, and 4.8m/s) to analyze the influence of confining pressure variation on the mechanical properties. The results demonstrate that the impact resistance of chain mail fabric significantly improves as the confining pressure increases from 0 kPa to 60 kPa. That fabric consisting of traditional rings velocity decay value increased from 19.3% to 50.2% at an impact velocity of approximately 4.8 m/s. Notably, the fabric composed of octahedral particles exhibited limited resistance to ball impact without applying confining pressure. However, when a pressure of 60 kPa was applied, the fabric effectively resisted ball impact and caused upward ball velocity. Multiple impact tests on single-layer fabrics and single impact tests on double-layer fabrics confirmed that fabrics consisting of square ring particles demonstrated better resistance to multiple impacts. The degree of interlocking within the topological interlocking structure, influenced by confining pressure, emerged as a crucial factor contributing to enhanced impact resistance. Numerical simulations revealed that the application of confining pressure promoted the formation of new contacts between interlocking particles. The number and quality of these contacts directly affected the overall mechanical properties, resulting in a solid-like structure. This research provides novel insights for developing structural fabrics with fast, reversible, and controllable stiffness adjustment characteristics. 

Dynamic response of chain mail fabrics with variable stiffness

Smart textiles with advanced functionalities are the new research area that attracts researchers to contribute to the wellness of human beings and provide comfort in a daily lifestyle. Smart textiles have the potential to perform multiple tasks and have significant applications in healthcare sectors including real-time monitoring of the physiological needs and health status of the wearer through sensors and integration of nanotechnology for better performance. The integration of sensors and nanomaterials in the fabrics has led the textile industries to deal with technological and physiological challenges such as the basic requirement of a textile to maintain the actual comfort, washability, perspiration, reusability and longevity. The objective of this review is to provide descriptive information to an expanding and challenging domain of smart textiles with a focus on their applications to human health and welfare. The study also highlights the role of nanomaterials in the development of antimicrobial smart textiles and discusses the challenges faced by smart textiles for their acceptance in society.
