Symmetric shock experiments were conducted on a 10 μm grain size coarse alumina ceramic with a gas gun to identify its Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL). To understand the damage initiation and their subsequent growth mechanisms in coarse grain alumina subjected to shock impact at levels much above the HEL, additional asymmetric shock recovery experiments with the same gas gun were then deliberately conducted on the same alumina at shock pressure levels more than three times as high as the HEL and the fragments collected by a dedicated catcher system. Detailed characterization of the shock recovered alumina fragments by X-ray diffraction, nanoindentation, scanning electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were utilized to understand the nature and process of failure initiation, incubational growth, coalescence and propagation leading to fragmentation. Based on these data a new qualitative damage model was developed to explain the deformation mechanism.

The success of any automation system depends upon the many a factors including communication between the nodes and the host, security, reliability, etc. With the advent of IoT, the demand for wireless communication and the need for faster reliable communication grew multifold. While 5G addresses the communication speed requirements, blockchain offers encrypted secure and reliable communication between participating peers. With growing number of transmitters, the system required to maintain portability for the communication systems is getting a challenge. It is becoming a hurdle in the IoT implementation in the sense of small, portable and robust nodes and units. Here, in this chapter, a SIW-based self-multiplexed antenna design integrated with decoupling network working over 5G to overcome these problems is proposed. This technique offers small footprint and compact size and is easily realized with highly demanding IoT systems. The isolation between two antennas is more than −20 dB with stable gain and unidirectional radiation pattern.

Shock wave compression of materials is accompanied by high pressure, high-strain-rate loading, elevated temperatures, large shear stresses and excessive plastic deformation. All these features create an unusual state in materials that is not possible in any processing method. Thus, in multi-component system of powders, these can lead to enhanced reactivity because of defect promoted diffusional flow of the reactants in a solid-solid chemical reaction for materials synthesis. On the other hand, in a one component system, these shock compression features may significantly influence the onset pressure, the kinetics, the mechanism and the reversibility of a phase transformation. We shall illustrate these using examples on the synthesis ofβ-C3N4 and our work on the crystal to amorphous phase transitions inq-GeO2 andα-FePO4.

Materials synthesis and phase transitions under shock waves

For the last two decades, we have been investigating the equation of state and phase transitions in various materials by first principle electron theory methods. In order to confirm some of the theoretical predictions, we have now built indigenously an experimental facility for generating both static and dynamic pressures on samples. For producing shocks, we have developed a single stage 62.8 mm gas gun. It is patterned after the Washington State University gas gun. A unique feature is a remote control unit which allows firing of the projectile in manual or auto mode. Both planar and inclined impacts can be obtained. We have developed instrumentation for measuring projectile velocity, tilt of the impactor, shock velocity, particle velocity and shock pressure profiles. A comparison of the expected and measured projectile velocities shows that the gun is performing well. Some preliminary compression experiments indicating the effect of shear on the α → ω phase transition in Ti will be reported.
