Non-human primates (NHPs) are close relatives of humans and can serve as hosts for many zoonotic pathogens. They play crucial role in spreading antimicrobial resistant bacteria (AMR) to humans across various ecological niches. The spread of antimicrobial resistance in NHPs may complicate wildlife conservation efforts, as it may threaten domestic livestock, endangered species as well as human’s health. This review analyses the existing literature on the prevalence of AMR in NHP species, including Rhinopithecus roxellana, Macaca fascicularis, and Sapajus nigritus, to create awareness in all stake holders involve in the fight against AMR on the serious potential threats that these primates pose. Methods: We performed a comprehensive literature search using the PubMed (National Library of Medicine-NLM), Scopus (Elsevier), Web of Science Core Collection (Clarivate Analytics), Springer Link (Springer), and Science Direct (Elsevier) databases until January, 2025. The search strategy combined terms from the areas of non-human primates, antibiotic resistance, antimicrobial resistance, and antibacterial resistance genes (ARGs). Studies that isolated bacteria from NHPs and assessed phenotypic resistance to specific antibiotics as well as studies that identified ARGs in bacteria isolated from NHPs were included. Data were synthesised thematically across all included studies. Results: A total of 37 studies were included (explained as Cercopithecidae (n = 23), Callithrix (n = 6), Cebidae (n = 4), Hominidae (n = 3), and Atelidae (n = 1)). The results showed that the most common ARB across the various NHPs and geographical settings was Staphylococcus spp. (45.95%) and Escherichia spp. (29.73%). The tested antibiotics that showed high levels of resistance in NHPs included Tetracycline (40.54%), Ciprofloxacin (32.43%), and Erythromycin (24.34%), whereas ermC, tetA, tetM, aadA, aph (3″)-II, and qnrS1 were the most widely distributed antibiotic resistance genes in the studies. Conclusion: NHPs are potential natural reservoirs of AMR, therefore global policy makers should consider making NHPs an indicator species for monitoring the spread of ARB. 

Phenotypic and Genotype Patterns of Antimicrobial Resistance in Non-Human Primates: An Overlooked “One Health” Concern


 The gado-gado food is the Javanese salad with peanut sauce consists of vegetable filling, lontong, potatoes, eggs, tofu and peanut sauce so has complete nutritional content, namely carbohydrates, fiber, protein and a little fat. This research aims to determine the biosafety of gado-gado food from street vendors around the Jember campus. This research is an exploratory study that investigates the biosafety of gado-gado street food around the Jember campus based on exposure to enteric microbes as an sanitation indicator using the chromogenic media. The isolated microbes were determined the fermentation profile using the BBL Crystal kit. Sampling was taken in three different places in zone 1 (A1), zone 2 (A2) and zone 3 (A3). The sampling time was carried out at 10am when the trader had just opened his stall (B1) and at 3pm before the trader closed his stall (B2). The amount of total bacterial in gado-gado from the street vendors around the Jember campus reached up to 105 CFU/g. The blue colony was identified as Raoutella planticola, which mostly comes from the soil and water. It is recommended that protect the street food from dust, air and need good handling of food service.

Biosafety of gado-gado street food around Jember campus

The antibiotic resistance of Klebsiella pneumoniae has become a global health concern, leading in a reduction in the efficacy of various medications. This study seeks to determine the antibiotic resistance of K. pneumoniae isolated from cats hospitalized in Depok veterinary clinics. Surveys, sample collection, isolation, identification, and antibiotic susceptibility testing comprised the research technique. Seven K. pneumoniae isolates were discovered. There were seven cefotaxime resistant isolates, three amoxicillin resistant isolates, one gentamicin resistant isolate, and one enrofloxacin resistant strain. At the same concentration, one isolate shown intermediate susceptibility to amoxicillin, enrofloxacin, and doxycycline. Sensitivity was demonstrated by six gentamicin isolates, six doxycycline isolates, five enrofloxacin isolates, and three amoxicillin isolates. This information should help veterinarians choose the best efficient antibiotic to treat infections caused by these bacteria.

Antibiotic resistance and virulence profile of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated from wild Sumatran Orangutans (Pongo abelii)

This study analyzes the mycobiome in wild and captive Sumatran orangutans.Nine orangutan feces samples from the wild and nine from captivity were divided into three repeats from 11- to 15-year-olds in good health. The Illumina platform for analysis of ITS bioinformatics was used according to the Qiime2 and CCMetagen approaches.Wild Sumatran orangutans include 53% Ascomycota, 38% uncultured fungi, and 4% Basidiomycota. Orangutans in captivity are 57% Ascomycota, 26% uncultured fungi, and 2% Basidiomycota. Based on genus level, uncultured Neurospora (31%), Penicillium (10%), Aspergillus (3%), Fusarium (3%), Candida (2%), Cutaneotrichosporon (2%), and Limonomyces (2%) are found in wild orangutans. The most prevalent genus among captivity orangutans is Aspergillus (32%), followed by fungal sp. (11%), Lasiodiplodia (18%), Devriesia (2%), and Sordariomycetes (2%). According to the Chao1 diversity index and Shannon and Simpson, there was no significant difference between wild and captive Sumatran orangutans.Neurospora is unique to wild Sumatran orangutans, although Aspergillus predominates in captive orangutans. We hypothesize that the gut mycobiome of wild orangutans will resemble that of orangutans in captivity. The excellent range of food sources in the forest does not result in the prevalence of fungi in the typical gut microbiome.
