In this article we apply the technique of Luttinger surgery to study the complexity of the fundamental group of symplectic 4- manifolds with holomorphic Euler numberh = 1. We discuss the topology of symplectic 4-manifolds with b + = 1 and provide various constructions of symplectic 4-manifolds with b + = 1 and prescribed c 2.

The geography and botany problems of irreducible non-spin symplectic 4-manifolds with a choice of fundamental group from {ℤp,ℤp⊕ℤq,ℤ,ℤ⊕ℤp,ℤ⊕ℤ} are studied by building upon the recent progress obtained on the simply connected realm. Results on the botany of simply connected 4-manifolds not available in the literature are extended.

We prove that, under a simple condition on the cohomology ring, every closed 4-manifold has mod 2 Seiberg-Witten simple type. This result shows that there exists a large class of topological 4-manifolds such that all smooth structures have mod 2 simple type, and yet some have non-vanishing (mod 2) Seiberg-Witten invariants. As corollaries, we obtain adjunction inequalities and show that, under a mild topological condition, every geometrically simply connected closed 4-manifold has the vanishing mod 2 Seiberg-Witten invariant for at least one orientation.

We study the geography and botany of symplectic spin four-manifolds with abelian fundamental group. By building on the constructions of J. Park and of B. D. Park and Szabo, we can give alternative proofs and extend several results on the geography of simply connected four-manifolds to the nonsimply connected realm.
