A uniplanar slot antenna for ultrawideband (UWB) polarization-diversity applications is presented. The antenna consists of an annular slot and orthogonal feeding mechanisms to achieve polarization diversity performance across the UWB from 2.8–11 GHz. By introducing a cross-shaped strip diagonally between the two U-shaped stubs, an interport isolation better than 14 dB is accomplished except at the lower and higher frequency end. The notch band from 5.0–6.3 GHz is realized by embedding arc-shaped slot resonators on the feeding structures. The proposed antenna facilitates nearly omnidirectional radiation pattern, low envelope correction coefficient, moderate gain, and efficiency. Moreover, the time-domain analysis displays minimum dispersion to the radiated pulse. All these features make the proposed antenna a good candidate for future wireless communication systems with polarization-diversity operation, where the challenge such as multipath fading is a major concern.

Uniplanar Slot Antenna for Ultrawideband Polarization-Diversity Applications

A new compact, uniplanar, polarisation-diversity, monopole-like slot antenna for ultra-wideband (UWB) systems is presented. The proposed design effectively integrates orthogonally fed slot antennas, utilising the uniplanar nature of coplanar waveguide without degrading the time-domain characteristics and diversity performance. To achieve high isolation between the ports, a strip is integrated diagonally in the ground plane. Furthermore, by loading arc shaped slot resonators on the feeding structures, the proposed antenna successfully rejects the undesired subband, assigned for IEEE 802.11a and HIPERLAN/2. The measured results demonstrate that the antenna provides a 2:1 voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) band from 2.76 to 10.75 GHz whereas showing rejection in the frequency band 4.75-6.12 GHz, along with an inter-port isolation better than 15 dB. The proposed radiator displays a nearly omnidirectional radiation pattern, along with a moderate gain and efficiency. The envelope correlation coefficient discloses a good diversity performance across the UWB spectrum. Furthermore, the time-domain analysis shows minimum dispersion to the radiated pulse. In addition, the experimental analysis indicates that the proposed design is less disposed to the housing effects when mounted in metallic casing. All these features make the proposed antenna a viable candidate for UWB dual-polarised multiple-input-multiple-output applications.

Uniplanar polarisation diversity antenna for ultra-wideband systems

This letter explores the design of a novel ultrawideband band (UWB) dual-polarized antenna with unidirectional radiation characteristics. The proposed antenna consists of a dual-polarized radiator mounted on a backing reflector constituted of a single-layer frequency selective surface (FSS) with a UWB stopband response. A design guide for the proposed FSS is described along with its operation mechanism that enables the proposed antenna to provide a high gain of an average of 9.5 dBi along with good radiation characteristics over the two polarizations. A measured −10-dB impedance band covering the entire UWB band with an isolation level of 20 dB is obtained for a low profile of λ /10. Owing to its features, the proposed antenna is attractive for integration with low-profile broadband printed circuits and UWB diversity communication systems.

A Novel UWB FSS-Based Polarization Diversity Antenna

A coplanar waveguide fed slot antenna for wideband circular polarization is designed and experimentally validated. The rectangular slot is excited using a stepped feed line terminated on a circular disc shaped tuning stub. To obtain circular polarization, inverted L-shaped strips are attached to the ground plane at the opposite corners while a rectangular slit is cut in the circular disc. The combined bandwidth (3-dB axial ratio and 10 dB impedance matching) achieved is 48% (4.35–7.1 GHz) under simulation and 40% (4.75–7.1 GHz) in measurement. The gain of the antenna is next enhanced by the application of a double layered square loop frequency selective surface. The frequency selective surface is used as a reflector placed beneath the antenna at an optimum distance. An improvement of about 4 dB is seen in the measured peak gain over most of the operating band. Experimental results are presented to characterize the antenna and the frequency selective surface and they are found to be in good agreement with the simulated results.

A circularly polarized slot antenna for high gain applications

This research work addresses the problem of mutual coupling between the antenna elements for ultra wideband diversity applications. A novel H-type decoupling structure has been proposed which successfully suppresses the mutual coupling by 7 to 10 dB as compared to the nondecoupled radiating elements. The decoupling structure has been tested for shared and isolated ground planes. The isolation between the antennas was measured to be more than 25 dB in most of the band. The feasibility of the proposed structure in diversity applications has been analyzed by measuring the envelope correlation coefficient which was found out to be less than −30 dB. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An UWB diversity antenna array with a novel H-type decoupling structure

In this paper we introduce a new compact dual-polarized circular slot antenna fed by two orthogonal CPW semi-discs. In order to achieve a good performance in terms of bandwidth and isolation, several techniques are used. To examine the antenna performances, numerical simulations using CST software were carried out. The obtained results show that the proposed antenna has good matching and isolation lower than −20dB over a broad-band of frequency from 3GHz to 14GHz. These features make the proposed antenna very attractive for UWB applications using polarization-diversity technique.

Design of a new dual-polarized ultra-wideband planar CPW fed antenna

In this paper, a compact CPW-fed dual-polarized antenna is proposed for UWB wireless communication systems with dual-polarization operation. The proposed antenna covers an ultra wide band from3.1 to 10.6 GHz with S 11 &#60; −10 dB and provides isolation below −25 dB across the operating band. Using the simulation tool CST MWS, the antenna was designed and optimized. Furthermore, an experimental prototype was fabricated and measured. The comparison between simulated and measured results shows a good agreement, which validates the proposed concept. The obtained results show good performances in terms of bandwidth and radiation pattern.
