Effect of LED curing on the microleakage, shear bond strength and surface hardness of a resin-based composite restoration

This study assessed the accuracy of an electronic hinge axis tracing device (Cadiax compact) in measuring the horizontal condylar inclination (HCI) and the Bennett angle. The hinge axis movements were simulated with an articulator to which the hinge axis tracer was attached. On the articulator the pre-set HCI values were 20 degrees, 40 degrees and 60 degrees, the pre-set Bennett angles were 0 degrees, 5 degrees, 10 degrees, 15 degrees, 20 degrees. The maximum measuring errors ranged from 0 to 3.4 degrees (in average 1.2 degrees ) and yielded statistically significant differences between articulator setting and Cadiax compact measurement (P < 0.05) except the HCI of 40 degrees and the Bennett angle of 0 degrees. Because of the small range of the maximum measuring error the Cadiax compact represented reasonable accuracy for clinical application in anterior guidance restorations.

The inclination of the condylar path is a fundamental consideration in the prosthodontic treatment of the totally edentulous patient. The authors studied 55 patients at the University of the Basque Country, making three graphic registrations of the protrusive condylar movement on each side. Three examiners, working independently, used the tangential method to measure the angulation relative to Camper's plane. The results show that angulation varies greatly on each side and from one individual to another. In the treatment of edentulous patients, graphic registering techniques that can determine these variations should be used.

summary Posterior condylar determinants play a key role in the establishment of a stable and harmonious occlusal scheme. Various methods exist to record the posterior condylar factors. The Denar electronic pantograph® computes these condylar determinants automatically after the execution of a pantographic tracing. Research has validated the accuracy and reliability of this electronic pantograph. Electronic pantographic analysis was carried out on 55 patients referred for various prosthodontic consultations. Values for condylar determinants were recorded and statistically appraised. Values for these condylar determinants were variable with a large range. The variability in condylar values suggests the importance of determining an individual's condylar determinants rather than relying on average values.

Effect of slow-curing on cavity wall adaptation using a new intensity-changeable light source.

PURPOSE To compare the 10-min and 24-hr shear bond strengths of three dentin bonding systems, polymerized with either a standard (Optilux 401) light for 60 s, or a stepped curing light (Elipar Highlight) that delivered a low light intensity for 10 s followed by high intensity for 50 s. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three bonding systems were used to bond two resin-based composites (RBC) to dentin at 34 degrees +/- 2C using the two curing lights. Single Bond (SB) and Prime & Bond 2.1 (PB EBS 11.9 +/- 2.9 MPa, SB 14.6 +/- 2.2 MPa, PB EBS 7.4 +/- 2.1 MPa, SB 13.0 +/- 3.6 MPa, PB EBS 14.8 +/- 5.1 MPa, SB 25.1 +/- 3.3 MPa, PB EBS 15.1 +/- 4.6 MPa, SB 21.9 +/- 5.9 MPa, P&B 17.3 +/- 9.2 MPa. Three way ANOVA showed significant main effects for light, bonding system and time and no 2- or 3-way interaction effects at P = 0.01. The Least-Squares Means test with Sidak's adjustment for Multiple Comparisons showed that the bond strengths obtained using the standard light were significantly greater than the bond strengths obtained using the stepped curing light (P < 0.01). The 24-hr bond strengths were significantly greater (P < 0.01) than the 10-min bond strengths. The bond strengths obtained with EBS were significantly less than SB and P&B (P < 0.01), but there were no significant differences between SB and PB (P = 0.9752).

Articulator settings were obtained for two subjects 10 times in a 2-week period by using both a lateral interocclusal record technique and a Pantronic pantograph The ORB and PSS articulator settings obtained from the two techniques were compared and the following conclusions drawn 1 Over a 2-week period, the variance in the Pantronic pantograph ORB and PSS articulator settings was less than the variance in the setting obtained by using lateral interocclusal records For the Pantronic pantograph technique, 95% of any ORB settings were within 25 degrees of the Pantronic pantograph mean and 95% of any PSS settings were within 19 degrees of the Pantronic pantograph mean For the interocclusal record technique, 95% of the ORB settings made with interocclusal records were within 119 degrees of the mean for one subject and 134 degrees of the mean interocclusal records setting for the other subject For the PSS settings, 95% of the interocclusal record settings were within 101 degrees of the mean setting for one subject and 116 degrees of the mean interoccusal record setting for the other subject 2 In adjusting the ORB and PSS articulator settings, the maximum potential occlusal errors that may be produced by using the Pantronic pantograph are smaller than the maximum errors that may be produced in using the lateral interocclusal record technique

Purpose This study compared the quantity of preweighed, packaged die stone use to bulk die stone use by dental students.



Materials and Methods Starting in September 1994, all the bulk die stone was removed from the dental clinic, and only preweighed packages of die stone (Silky-Rock, Whip Mix) were available to students. At the end of August 1995 and August 1997, the amount of preweighed die stone used by the students was determined and compared with the amount of bulk die stone (DieKeen, Modern Materials) used during the period of September 1993 to August 1994.



Results Between September 1994 and August 1997, the students used 42% less per annum of the preweighed, packaged die stone than the previous annual use of bulk die stone. The laboratories were much cleaner when the preweighed packages were used, and fewer cleaning staff were required. The environment was also cleaner for the laboratory staff, who used to fill the bulk containers with gypsum products.



Conclusions Students used 42% less die stone per annum when using the preweighed packages.
