Measurements of the electron density as a function of time during the decay period of pulsed plasmas produced in helium, neon, and argon are reported. The values of the mobilities of positive ions in their parent gas, calculated from the rate of electron loss by ambipolar diffusion, are compared with those measured with the ion-transit-time methods. The values, consistent with data obtained with these two different measuring techniques, are ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}({\mathrm{He}}^{+})=10.7$, ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}({{\mathrm{He}}_{2}}^{+})=16.2$, ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}({\mathrm{Ne}}^{+})=4.1$, ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}({{\mathrm{Ne}}_{2}}^{+})=6.5$, ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}({\mathrm{Ar}}^{+})=1.6$, and ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}({{\mathrm{Ar}}_{2}}^{+})=1.9$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$/V sec. The dependence on gas pressure of the efficiency of the cataphoretic segregation of neon impurity atoms in helium is demonstrated and explained.

Ion Mobilities in Helium, Neon, and Argon

The paramagnetic resonance absorptions in several trichelate complexes of Cr+3 have been investigated at room temperature and at 1.2‐ and 3.0‐cm wavelengths. From single crystal measurements on chromic acetylacetonate the orientations of the electric axes were determined and the parameters in the spin‐Hamiltonian found to be g = 1.983±0.002, |D| = 0.592±0.002 cm—1, and |E| = 0.052±0.002 cm—1. The asymmetric single absorption peak with g = 4 found in several of the powders and in their liquid solutions is explained on the basis of the relatively large value of D associated with the individual trichelate molecules. The apparent inadequacy of the ``ionic'' model for several chromic compounds is also discussed.

Paramagnetic Resonance Absorption in Some Cr+3 Complexes

This paper is intended to serve both as an introduction to radar cross-section measurements and as an introduction to the several measurement papers that follow in this issue. We discuss the contribution that experimental work makes to theoretical studies. The history of cross-section measurements is reviewed. Some terms are defined, and the major measurement problems are discussed. It is pointed out that the various range geometries and measurement techniques in use today were based on the approach used to solve the basic measurement problems. Some details are given of the more popular present-day measurement systems, i.e., CW, pulsed, FM-CW, Doppler, and the standing-wave ratio method.

Measurements of the absorption of 5-nmm radiation in oxygen gas have been made. The experimentally observed magnitude and shape of the absorption may be satisfactorily compared with the theoretical curves of Van Vleck for an assumed line breadth LAv 0.015 to 0.02 cm 1 . Observations of the absorption in mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen indicate a disparity of 02 and N2 collision cross sections. The Microwave Absorption Spectrum of Oxygen

Two electronic circuits for frequency stabilization of electronically tunable microwave oscillators are described and discussed. One of these uses a microwave circuit equivalent to the lowfrequency discriminator, in conjunction with a d.c. amplifier, to control the oscillator frequency at the frequency of a cavity resonator. The other circuit obtains frequency control of the oscillator by the cavity through a circuit operating almost entirely at an intermediate frequency. With both systems, frequency modulation of a highly degenerative type is provided. The resulting stability over long periods is essentially that of the cavity. The stability over short periods is such that the signal obtained occupies a band of less than 1 part in 108in width. The practical limit to the stabilization obtainable with given components is estimated, and several applications are suggested.
