Kinetic-size magnetic holes (KSMHs) can accelerate and heat the particles, resulting the energy dissipation in space plasmas. KSMHs in the terrestrial foreshock region are statistically investigated based on the Magnetospheric Multiscale data from October 2015 to December 2019. A total of 98 KSMHs are successfully selected, and most of them are accompanied by electron vortices. The fluxes of electrons at ∼90° of pitch angle enhance inside the magnetic holes, where the perpendicular and total electron temperature increase, and the parallel electron temperature slightly decreases inside these magnetic holes. Moreover, we reveal a novel phenomenon that a lot of the observed KSMHs are probably moving toward the Sun in the plasma flow frame. Such sunward propagating KSMHs are detected for the first time in the foreshock region. We propose that these observed KSMHs are probably generated in the foreshock region and then propagate to the Sun. 

Kinetic‐Size Magnetic Holes in the Terrestrial Foreshock Region

The small-scale magnetic hole (SSMH), characterized by magnetic field depression, is a structure with the size in the order of proton gyro-radius. SSMHs near the Earth or other planets have been widely observed in recent years. However, SSMHs in the solar wind near the Sun are rarely investigated due to mission constraints. In the present study, SSMHs in the pristine solar wind within a wide heliocentric distance range are analyzed based on the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) Mission measurements. A total of 2,416 SSMHs are successfully identified during the orbits of PSP from 2nd October, 2018, to 31st December, 2020, with an average occurrence rate of ∼5.8 events/day. The occurrence rate of SSMHs decreases from ∼29.5 to ∼0.6 events/day as the heliocentric distance R increases. The spatial scale of these SSMHs obeys a bi-log-normal distribution, with the median scale L ∼ 137 km (∼6 ρp, proton gyro-radius). As interplanetary magnetic field Bave increases or R decreases, the upper limit of the spatial scale L corresponding to each bin extends to a larger value. The L corresponding to the maximum occurrence rate also increases when Bave increases and R decreases. Besides, the SSMHs tend to occur more frequently in the solar wind environment with weak Bave and high thermal pressure Pt. Our results shed light on the characteristics and the origin of SSMHs in the pristine solar wind. 

Small‐Scale Magnetic Holes in the Solar Wind Observed by Parker Solar Probe


 Utilizing the unprecedented high-resolution Magnetospheric Multiscale mission data from 2015 September to 2017 December, we perform a statistical study of electron vortexes in the turbulent terrestrial magnetosheath. On the whole, 506 electron vortex events are successfully selected. Electron vortexes can occur at four known types of magnetic structures, including 78, 42, 26, and 39 electron vortexes observed during the crossings of the current sheets, magnetic holes, magnetic peaks, and flux ropes, respectively. Except for the four types of structures, the rest of the electron vortexes are in the “Others” category, defined as unknown structures. The electron vortexes mainly occur in the subsolar region, with only a few in the flank region. The total occurrence rate of all electron vortexes is 4.86 hr–1, with, on average, 3.65 events hr−1 in the X-Y plane and 3.26 events hr−1 in the X-Z plane. The durations of most of the electron vortexes concentrate within 0.5–1.5 s and are 1.09 s on average. The electron vortexes are ion-scale structures owing to the average scale of 2.05 ion gyroradius. In addition, the means, medians, and maxima of the energy dissipation J · E′ in the electron vortexes are almost positive, implying that the electron vortex may be a potential coherent structure or channel for turbulent energy dissipation. All these results reveal the statistical characteristics of electron vortexes in the magnetosheath and improve our understanding of energy dissipation in astrophysical and space plasmas.

Statistical Characteristics of Electron Vortexes in the Terrestrial Magnetosheath

In general, slow solar wind from the streamer belt forms a high plasma β equatorial plasma sheet around the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) crossing, namely, the heliospheric plasma sheet (HPS). Current Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observations show that the HCS crossings near the Sun could be full or partial current sheet (PCS) crossings, and they share some common features but also have different properties. In this work, using the PSP observations from encounters 4–10, we identify streamer belt solar wind from enhancements in plasma β, and we further use electron pitch angle distributions to separate it into HPS solar wind around the full HCS crossings and PCS solar wind in the vicinity of PCS crossings. Based on our analysis, we find that the PCS solar wind has different characteristics as compared with HPS solar wind: (a) the PCS solar wind could be non-pressure-balanced structures rather than magnetic holes, and the total pressure enhancement mainly results from the less reduced magnetic pressure; (b) some of the PCS solar wind is mirror-unstable; and (c) the PCS solar wind is dominated by very low helium abundance but varied alpha–proton differential speed. We suggest that the PCS solar wind could originate from coronal loops deep inside the streamer belt, and it is pristine solar wind that still actively interacts with ambient solar wind; thus, it is valuable for further investigations of the heating and acceleration of slow solar wind.

Parker Solar Probe Observations of High Plasma β Solar Wind from the Streamer Belt

When the solar wind encounters the blunt Earth's magnetosphere, a detached shock (i.e., the bow shock) forms at a distance about ten Earth radii from the Earth. The Earth's magnetosheath is a spatially-bounded transition region between the bow shock and the magnetopause, which directly interfaces with the magnetosphere. As the dynamic processes occurring in the magnetosheath may directly influence the magnetosphere, research on the magnetosheath has an important impact on our understanding of the magnetospheric dynamics and space weather. The magnetosheath is a natural laboratory of plasma dynamics, exhibiting various types of structures and waves. Studying these structures and waves can help us understand the magnetosheath's dynamic processes and nonlinear wave-particle interactions. Also, the magnetosheath provides an advantage condition for studying plasma turbulence. Turbulence within the magnetosheath features a distinctive characteristic than the solar wind turbulence, which provides another important in-situ turbulence laboratory except for the solar wind. Thanks to the high-resolution plasma measurements from the Cluster and Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, some dynamic phenomena can be studied by in-situ observations in the magnetosheath. This paper reviews recent advances in studying the structure, waves and turbulence of the Earth's magnetosheath. Moreover, we primarily focus on domestic research using the Cluster and MMS missions data. The review is organized a brief introduction to the magnetosheath is provided. Then, the related researches on structures, waves and turbulence are described in three sections, respectively. At last, we also discuss some unsolved problems and the possible future research directions.

The Earth's magnetosheath: Structures, waves and turbulence

Depression in magnetic field strength with a scale below one proton gyroradius is referred to as kinetic-size magnetic hole (KSMH). KSMHs are frequently observed near terrestrial space environments and are thought to play an important role in electron energization and energy dissipation in space plasmas. Recently, KSMHs have been evidenced in the Venusian magnetosheath. However, observations of KSMHs in other planetary environments are still lacking. In this study, we present the in situ detection of KSMHs in Martian magnetosheath using Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) for the first time. The distribution of KSMHs is asymmetry in the southern northern hemisphere and no obvious asymmetry in the dawn dusk hemisphere. The observed KSMHs are accompanied by increases in the electron fluxes in the perpendicular direction, indicating the cues of trapped electrons and the formation of electron vortices inside KSMHs. These features are similar to the observations in the terrestrail magtosheath and magnetotail plasma sheet and the Venusian magnetosheath. This implies that KSMHs are a universal magnetic structure in space.
