Organic semiconductor lasers.

The applications of surface-emitting lasers, in particular vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), are currently being extended to various low-power fields including communications and interconnections. However, the fundamental difficulties in increasing their output power by more than several milliwatts while maintaining single-mode operation prevent their application in high-power fields such as material processing, laser medicine and nonlinear optics, despite their advantageous properties of circular beams, the absence of catastrophic optical damage, and their suitability for two-dimensional integration. Here, we demonstrate watt-class high-power, single-mode operation by a two-dimensional photonic-crystal surface-emitting laser under room-temperature, continuous-wave conditions. The two-dimensional band-edge resonant effect of a photonic crystal formed by metal–organic chemical vapour deposition enables a 1,000 times broader coherent-oscillation area, which results in a high beam quality of M2 ≤ 1.1, narrowing the focus spot by two orders of magnitude compared to VCSELs. Our demonstration promises to realize innovative high-power applications for surface-emitting lasers. Researchers demonstrate a watt-class high-power, single-mode photonic-crystal laser operating continuously at room temperature. A beam quality of M2 ≤ 1.1 is achieved.

Watt-class high-power, high-beam-quality photonic-crystal lasers

A vertical-cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) was invented 30 years ago. A lot of unique features can be expected, such as low-power consumption, wafer-level testing, small packaging capability, and so on. The market of VCSELs has been growing up rapidly in recent years, and they are now key devices in local area networks using multimode optical fibers. Also, long wavelength VCSELs are currently attracting much interest for use in single-mode fiber metropolitan area and wide area network applications. In addition, a VCSEL-based disruptive technology enables various consumer applications such as a laser mouse and laser printers. In this paper, the recent advance of VCSEL photonics will be reviewed, which include the wavelength extension of single-mode VCSELs and their wavelength integration/control. Also, this paper explores the potential and challenges for new functions of VCSELs toward optical signal processing

Recent Advances of VCSEL Photonics

The wavelength range around 2 μm which is covered by the laser systems described in this chapter is part of the so called “eye safe” wavelength region which begins at about 1.4 μm. Laser systems that operate in this region offer exceptional advantages for free space applications compared to conventional systems that operate at shorter wavelengths. This gives them a great market potential for the use in LIDAR and gas sensing systems and for direct optical communication applications. The favourable absorption in water makes such lasers also very useful for medical applications. As it can be seen in figure 1, there is a strong absorption peak near 2 μm which reduces the penetration depth of this wavelength in tissue to a few hundred μm.

2 µm Laser Sources and Their Possible Applications

We describe the design, fabrication, and measured characteristics of the high-power optically pumped-semiconductor (OPS) vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). Using diode laser pumping, we have recently demonstrated operation of such lasers, which for the first time generate high (watt-level) power and a circular Gaussian beam directly from a semiconductor laser. These OPS-VECSELs have a strain-compensated multi-quantum-well InGaAs-GaAsP-GaAs structure and operate CW near /spl lambda//spl sim/1004 nm with output power of 0.69 W in TEM/sub 11/ mode, 0.52 W in TEM/sub 00/ mode and 0.37 W coupled to a single-mode fiber. With multiple pump and gain elements, OPS-VCSEL technology is scalable to the multiwatt power levels. Such lasers will prove useful in a variety of applications requiring compact and efficient sources with high-power output in a single-mode fiber or with diffraction-limited beam quality.

Design and characteristics of high-power (>0.5-W CW) diode-pumped vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting semiconductor lasers with circular TEM/sub 00/ beams

We report demonstration of a new high-power semiconductor laser technology, the optically pumped semiconductor (OPS) vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser (VECSEL). Using diode laser pump, an OPS-VECSEL laser with a strain-compensated InGaAs-GaAsP-GaAs multiquantum-well (MQW) structure operated continuous-wave (CW) near /spl lambda//spl sim/1004 nm with record output power of 0.69 W in a TEM/sub 11/ mode, 0.52 W in a TEM/sub 00/ mode, and 0.37 W coupled to a single-mode fiber. It is feasible to produce greater than 1 W of power in a diffraction-limited circular beam from an efficient, compact, manufacturable and reliable OPS-VECSEL laser.
