Non-mycorrhizal microbial inoculants (biofertilizers) can potentially stimulate soil P cycling by solubilizing organic- and mineral-bound P. These P-solubilizing microorganisms (PSM) include a wide range of bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes, many of which are common in the rhizosphere. There appears to be two main PSM strategies for enhancing soil P availability, namely (1) the enhanced dissolution of P-containing minerals through a combination of soil acidification and the release of metal complexing agents (predominantly organic acid anions) and (2) the enzymatic breakdown of organic P. In terms of P cycling in natural environments, it is likely that strategy (2) is most important in terms of the annual flux of P through the plant–soil system. However, in highly P-limiting environments it is likely that strategy (1) becomes more important for mobilizing highly insoluble mineral-bound P. Field application of PSM have shown highly variable responses due to the fact that most PSM are not selected for their rhizosphere competence or for their ability to survive in different soil types.

Solubilization of Phosphorus by Soil Microorganisms

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of phosphorus (30, 45 and 60 kg P ha-1) and organic matter (canola straw, berseem straw and farmyard manure) on growth and fodder yield of moth bean (Vigna aconitifolia Jacq.) under irrigated and dryland conditions. The experiment was conducted under two field conditions viz. (i) with irrigation and (ii) without irrigation (dryland). The experiment under each field condition was laid out in a randomized complete block design having three replications. The results revealed that P and organic matter treated plots (rest) under both irrigated and dryland conditions had better growth and produced higher fresh and dry fodder yields over control (no P and no organic matter applied). Moth bean planted under irrigated condition (no moisture stress) had improved growth, and produced higher fresh and dry fodder yields over dryland condition. Increasing the rate of P increased growth, fresh and dry fodder yields (60 kg P ha-1 > 45 kg P ha-1 > 30 kg P ha-1). Increase in growth, fresh and dry yields was obtained with the application of farmyard manure over plant residues incorporation. We concluded from this study that application of P at the highest rate of 60 kg P ha-1 along with farmyard manure (5 t ha-1) as source of OM improve growth and fodder yield of moth bean under irrigated and dryland conditions under semiarid climates.

Integrated use of phosphorus and organic matter improve fodder yield of moth bean (Vigna aconitifolia (Jacq.) under irrigated and dryland conditions of Pakistan

Pulses are the main source of dietary protein particularly for vegetarians and contribute about 14 per cent of the total protein of average Indian diet. Urdbean [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper] is among the major pulses grown throughout the country during both in summer and rainy season. It is a self pollinated leguminous crop containing 24% protein. The duration of the crop is very short; it fits well in various multiple and intercropping systems. After removing pods, its plant may be used as good quality green or dry fodder or green manure. Being a legume, it also enriches soil by fixing atmospheric nitrogen. Phosphorus is a universally deficient plant nutrient in most of the soils of Rajasthan, particular in light textured soils. the maximum number of pods per plant 98.62, number of pods per cluster 11.08, higher pod length 10.7 cm, pod weight per plant 252.69 g, number of clusters per plant 19.44 and net assimilation rate 0.0056 g/cm/day at 30 DAS. Among different quality parameters, treatment T12 had recorded significantly the maximum chlorophyll content of green pod 1.509 mg/g fresh weight and superior keeping quality of green pods in grade ‘A’ at 2 and 4 days after harvesting. Base on economics this treatment T12 (I.B.N.M seed and spray + Rhizobium + PSB + Amrutmati @ 2.5 t/ha + Vermicompost @ 2.5 t/ha + F.Y.M @ 10 t/ha) stood first in gain the highest net realization worth of ` 176686 per hectare and CBR (1:5.1), besides these this treatment T12 rank first among the group of organic and bio-fertilizers treatments. The treatment T5 ((12.5 kg N + 25 kg P2O5)/ha + Rhizobium + PSB + I.B.N.M seed and spray + F.Y.M @ 10 t/ha) perform second best in producing the highest pod yield 17.64 t/ha with maximum net return ` 141387 per hectare and CBR (1:5.0) among the group of treatments which comprised with chemical fertilizers and bio-fertilizers.

EFFECTS OF CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS, BIO-FERTILIZERS AND ORGANIC MATTERS ON GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF VEGETABLE CLUSTER BEAN (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L). Taub) cv. PUSA NAVBAHAR IN SUMMER

A field experiment was conducted to assess the effect of Rhizobium and phosphorus solubilizing bacteria (PSB) alone and in combination with different recommended NP levels i.e. RDF (20–17.4 kg N-P/ha) on performance of rain fed cluster bean (Cyamposis tetragonoloba L. Taub.) at Bikaner. Increasing NP levels resulted in significant increase in growth, yield attributes, and yield. The increase in seed yield was significant up to 50% RDF in 2004 (1.01 t/ha) and up to 75% RDF in 2005 (1.15 t/ha). However biological yield (mean 4.66 t/ha) increased significantly upto 75% RDF during both the years. Unfertilized control recorded the least seed and biomass yields. However, P uptake increased significantly up to application of 100% RDF N, K uptake and B:C ratio increased only up to 75% RDF. The highest net returns (Rs 22,393/ha) were recorded with 100% RDF. The growth, yield attributes, and yield increased significantly due to inoculation of cluster bean with biofertlizers. Combined inoculation of Rhizobium and PSB was more promising from productivity and profitability point of view as compared to their sole inoculation. Integrated use of 75% RDF with Rhizobium + PSB inoculation was the best for cluster bean.
