Most existing dehazing networks rely on synthetic hazy-clear image pairs for training, and thus fail to work well in real-world scenes. In this paper, we deduce a reformulated atmospheric scattering model for a hazy image and propose a novel lightweight two-branch dehazing network. In the model, we use a Transformation Map to represent the dehazing transformation and use a Compensation Map to represent variable illumination compensation. Based on this model, we design a Two-Branch Network (TBN) to jointly estimate the Transformation Map and Compensation Map. Our TBN is designed with a shared Feature Extraction Module and two Adaptive Weight Modules. The Feature Extraction Module is used to extract shared features from hazy images. The two Adaptive Weight Modules generate two groups of adaptive weighted features for the Transformation Map and Compensation Map, respectively. This design allows for a targeted conversion of features to the Transformation Map and Compensation Map. To further improve the dehazing performance in the real-world, we propose a semi-supervised learning strategy for TBN. Specifically, by performing supervised pre-training based on synthetic image pairs, we propose a Self-Enhancement method to generate pseudo-labels, and then further train our TBN with the pseudo-labels in a semi-supervised way. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the model-based TBN outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on various real-world datasets.

Compensation Atmospheric Scattering Model and Two-Branch Network for Single Image Dehazing

The preservation of image details in the defogging process is still one key challenge in the field of deep learning. The network uses the generation of confrontation loss and cyclic consistency loss to ensure that the generated defog image is similar to the original image, but it cannot retain the details of the image. To this end, we propose a detail enhanced image CycleGAN to retain the detail information during the process of defogging. Firstly, the algorithm uses the CycleGAN network as the basic framework and combines the U-Net network’s idea with this framework to extract visual information features in different spaces of the image in multiple parallel branches, and it introduces Dep residual blocks to learn deeper feature information. Secondly, a multi-head attention mechanism is introduced in the generator to strengthen the expressive ability of features and balance the deviation produced by the same attention mechanism. Finally, experiments are carried out on the public data set D-Hazy. Compared with the CycleGAN network, the network structure of this paper improves the SSIM and PSNR of the image dehazing effect by 12.2% and 8.1% compared with the network and can retain image dehazing details.

ADE-CycleGAN: A Detail Enhanced Image Dehazing CycleGAN Network

This paper investigates a novel unpaired video dehazing framework, which can be a good candidate in practice by relieving pressure from collecting paired data. In such a paradigm, two key issues including 1) temporal consistency uninvolved in single image dehazing, and 2) better dehazing ability need to be considered for satisfied performance. To handle the mentioned problems, we alternatively resort to introducing depth information to construct additional regularization and supervision. Specifically, we attempt to synthesize realistic motions with depth information to improve the effectiveness and applicability of traditional temporal losses, and thus better regularizing the spatiotemporal consistency. Moreover, the depth information is also considered in terms of adversarial learning. For haze removal, the depth information guides the local discriminator to focus on regions where haze residuals are more likely to exist. The dehazing performance is consequently improved by more pertinent guidance from our depth-aware local discriminator. Extensive experiments are conducted to validate our effectiveness and superiority over other competitors. LIASM-NRID: Constructing an atmospheric scattering model for low-light conditions and dehazing nighttime road images

Though deep learning-based surgical smoke removal methods have shown significant improvements in effectiveness and efficiency, the lack of paired smoke and smoke-free images in real surgical scenarios limits the performance of these methods. Therefore, methods that can achieve good generalization performance without paired in-vivo data are in high demand. In this work, we propose a smoke veil prior regularized two-stage smoke removal framework based on the physical model of smoke image formation. More precisely, in the first stage, we leverage a reconstruction loss, a consistency loss and a smoke veil prior-based regularization term to perform fully supervised training on a synthetic paired image dataset. Then a self-supervised training stage is deployed on the real smoke images, where only the consistency loss and the smoke veil prior-based loss are minimized. Experiments show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art ones on synthetic dataset. The average PSNR, SSIM and RMSE values are 21.99±2.34, 0.9001±0.0252 and 0.2151±0.0643, respectively. The qualitative visual inspection on real dataset further demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method. 

Smoke veil prior regularized surgical field desmoking without paired in-vivo data

Image dehazing is a critical image pre-processing task to estimate the haze-free images corresponding to the input hazy images. Despite the recent advances, the task of image dehazing remains challenging, especially in the unsupervised scenario. Several efforts can be found in the literature to dehaze images in a supervised set-up, where a huge number of paired (clear and hazy images) images are required for training. The supervised approaches often become biased towards the nature of haze present in the training hazy images, and produce less realistic images for query hazy images. We propose an Attention-based Global–Local Cycle-consistent Generative Adversarial Network (AGLC-GAN) for Unpaired Single Image Dehazing. The proposed CycleGAN-based AGLC-GAN model contains a dehazing generator encapsulating an autoencoder-like network with an attention mechanism comprising channel attention and pixel attention to deal with uneven haze intensity across the image. We use a global–local consistent discriminator to identify spatially varying haze and improve the stability of the discriminator. We adopt cyclic perceptual consistency loss to maintain consistency in the feature space. A dynamic feature enhancement module and an adaptive mix-up module are included in the proposed generator to dynamically obtain more spatially structured features and hence, adaptively preserve the flow of shallow features. Furthermore, we extensively experiment with the proposed model on multiple benchmark datasets for evaluating the efficacy of removing haze. The results of the experiments conducted in the study, demonstrate a significant quantitative and qualitative improvement over the existing methods for unpaired image dehazing. 1 

AGLC-GAN: Attention-based global-local cycle-consistent generative adversarial networks for unpaired single image dehazing

Single image dehazing is a popular research topic among the researchers in computer vision, machine learning, image processing, and graphics. Most of the recent methods for single image dehazing are based upon supervised learning set up. However, supervised methods require annotation of the data, which often makes the dehazing methods biased towards the manual annotation errors. Unsupervised methods are more likely to produce realistic, clear images. However, fewer efforts are found in the literature for single image dehazing in unsupervised set up. We propose an enhanced CycleGAN architecture for Unpaired single image dehazing, with an attention-based transformer architecture embedded in the generator. The proposed transformer comprises three components: 1) A Feature Attention (FA) block combining channel attention and pixel attention mechanism, 2) A Dynamic feature enhancement block for dynamically capturing the spatial structured features and 3) An adaptive mix-up module to preserve the flow of shallow features from downsampling.
