Calculated values of the viscosity, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity of argon, nitrogen, and oxygen plasmas, and mixtures of argon anti nitrogen and of argon anti oxygen, are presented. In addition, combined ordinary, pressure, and thermal diffusion coefficients are given for the gas mixtures. These three combined diffusion coefficients fully describe di fusion of the two gases, irrespective of their degree of dissociation or ionizati on. The calculations, which assume local thermodynamic equilibrium, are performed! for atmospheric-pressure plasmas in the temperature range /torn 300 to 30,000 K. A number of the collision integrals used in calculating the transport coefficients are significantly more accurate than values used in previous theoretical studies, resulting in more reliable values of the transport coefficients. The results are compared with those of published theoretical and experimental studies.

The results for air plasmas are compared with those of published theoretical and experimental studies. Significant discrepancies are found with the other theoretical studies; these are attributed to differences in the collision integrals used in calculating the transport coefficients. A number of the collision integrals used here are significantly more accurate than values used previously, resulting in more reliable values of the transport coefficients.

Transport coefficients of air, argon-air, nitrogen-air, and oxygen-air plasmas

Thermodynamic and transport properties of high temperature equilibrium air plasmas have been calculated in a wide pressure (\(0.01\div100\) atm) and temperature range (\(50\div60\,000\) K). The results have been obtained by using a self-consistent approach for the thermodynamic properties and higher order approximation of the Chapman-Enskog method for the transport coefficients. Debye-Hukel corrections have been considered in the thermodynamic properties while collision integrals of charge-charge interactions have been obtained by using a screened Coulomb potential. Calculated values have been fitted by closed forms ready to be inserted in fluid dynamic codes.

Thermodynamic and transport properties in equilibrium air plasmas in a wide pressure and temperature range

A new transport coefficient model based on the first approximation of the Chapman-Cowling theory is implemented into the URANUS nonequilibrium NavierStokes Code in order to predict re-entry flows more accurately. The new model is compared to the widely used, simplified model of Gupta and Yos. The simplifications used to obtain the latter model are described in detail. The transport coefficients computed with both methods differ by up to a factor of two in the case of partially ionized air under equilibrium conditions. Therefore, the new model allows a more accurate description of the thermo-chemical relaxation in the shock region of significantly ionized, high-temperature flows. The differences in surface heat fluxes between the new model and the model of Yos and Gupta are smaller than 4%.

The electrical conductivity, the translational, reactive, and internal thermal conductivity and the viscosity have been calculated for nitrogen at 1‐atm pressure and temperatures from 5000‐35 000°K. Generally satisfactory agreement is noted between the properties as computed and measured in the electric arc.
