In now days, deep learning has become a prominent and emerging research area in computer vision applications. Deep learning permits the multiple layers models for computation to learn representations of data by processing in their original form while it is not possible in conventional machine learning. These methods surprisingly improved the accuracy of various image processing domains such as speech recognition, face recognition, object detection and in biomedical applications. Deep neural networks (DNN) such as convolutional neural network (CNN) provide tremendous results in processing of images and videos, while another approach of deep network i.e. recurrent neural network (RNN) gives better performance with sequential data such as text and speech.

A Review on Conventional Machine Learning vs Deep Learning

Renewable energy is essential for planet sustainability. Renewable energy output forecasting has a significant impact on making decisions related to operating and managing power systems. Accurate prediction of renewable energy output is vital to ensure grid reliability and permanency and reduce the risk and cost of the energy market and systems. Deep learning's recent success in many applications has attracted researchers to this field and its promising potential is manifested in the richness of the proposed methods and the increasing number of publications. To facilitate further research and development in this area, this paper provides a review of deep learning-based solar and wind energy forecasting research published during the last five years discussing extensively the data and datasets used in the reviewed works, the data pre-processing methods, deterministic and probabilistic methods, and evaluation and comparison methods. The core characteristics of all the reviewed works are summarised in tabular forms to enable methodological comparisons. The current challenges in the field and future research directions are given. The trends show that hybrid forecasting models are the most used in this field followed by Recurrent Neural Network models including Long Short-Term Memory and Gated Recurrent Unit, and in the third place Convolutional Neural Networks. We also find that probabilistic and multistep ahead forecasting methods are gaining more attention. Moreover, we devise a broad taxonomy of the research using the key insights gained from this extensive review, the taxonomy we believe will be vital in understanding the cutting-edge and accelerating innovation in this field.

A review and taxonomy of wind and solar energy forecasting methods based on deep learning

Innovation is considered as a main driver of economic growth. Promoting the development of innovation through STI (science, technology and innovation) policies requires accurate indicators of innovation. Traditional indicators often lack coverage, granularity as well as timeliness and involve high data collection costs, especially when conducted at a large scale. In this paper, we propose a novel approach on how to create firm-level innovation indicators at the scale of millions of firms. We use traditional firm-level innovation indicators from the questionnaire-based Community Innovation Survey (CIS) survey to train an artificial neural network classification model on labelled (innovative/non-innovative) web texts of surveyed firms. Subsequently, we apply this classification model to the web texts of hundreds of thousands of firms in Germany to predict their innovation status. Our results show that this approach produces credible predictions and has the potential to be a valuable and highly cost-efficient addition to the existing set of innovation indicators, especially due to its coverage and regional granularity. The predicted firm-level probabilities can also directly be interpreted as a continuous measure of innovativeness, opening up additional advantages over traditional binary innovation indicators.

Predicting innovative firms using web mining and deep learning

This paper proposed a non-segmentation radiological method for classification of benign and malignant thyroid tumors using B mode ultrasound data. This method aimed to combine the advantages of morphological information provided by ultrasound and convolutional neural networks in automatic feature extraction and accurate classification. Compared with the traditional feature extraction method, this method directly extracted features from the data set without the need for segmentation and manual operations. 861 benign nodule images and 740 malignant nodule images were collected for training data. A deep convolution neural network VGG-16 was constructed to analyze test data including 100 malignant nodule images and 109 benign nodule images. A nine fold cross validation was performed for training and testing of the classifier. The results showed that the method had an accuracy of 86.12%, a sensitivity of 87%, and a specificity of 85.32%. This computer-aided method demonstrated comparable diagnostic performance with the result reported by an experienced radiologist based on American college of radiology thyroid imaging reporting and data system (ACR TI-RADS) (accuracy: 87.56%, sensitivity: 92%, and specificity: 83.49%). The automation advantage of this method suggested application potential in computer-aided diagnosis of thyroid cancer.

Researchers have made great progress in developing cutting-edge solar energy forecasting methods. However, these methods are far from optimal in terms of their accuracy, generalizability, benchmarking, and other requirements. Particularly, no single method performs well across all climates and weather due to the large variations in meteorological data. This paper proposes SENERGY (an acronym for sustainable energy), a novel deep learning-based auto-selective approach and tool that, instead of generalizing a specific model for all climates, predicts the best performing deep learning model for global horizontal irradiance (GHI) forecasting in terms of forecasting error. The approach is based on carefully devised deep learning methods and feature sets created through an extensive analysis of deep learning forecasting and classification methods using ten meteorological datasets from three continents. We analyze the tool in great detail through a variety of metrics and means for performance analysis, visualization, and comparison of solar forecasting methods. SENERGY outperforms existing methods in all performance metrics including mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), the normalized versions of these three metrics (nMAE, nRMSE, nMAPE), forecast skill (FS), and relative forecasting error. The long short-term memory-autoencoder model (LSTM-AE) outperformed the other four forecasting models and achieved the best results (nMAE = nRMSE = nMAPE = 0.02). The LSTM-AE model is the most accurate in all weather conditions. Predictions for sunny days are more accurate than for cloudy days as well as for summer compared to winter. SENERGY can predict the best forecasting model with 81% accuracy. The proposed auto-selective approach can be extended to other research problems, such as wind energy forecasting, and to predict forecasting models based on different criteria such as the energy required or speed of model execution, different input features, different optimizations of the same models, or other user preferences.
