In recent years, the communications community has witnessed an explosive advancement in new technology attributable mainly to the successful commercial ventures of mobile and personal wireless communication. At the forefront of this technology is spread spectrum communication. Motivated by classical properties of interference immunity, security and fade resistance, spread spectrum communication has migrated out of the purely military sector to become a leading contender for many new commercial standards. Inevitably, the applications spawn new theoretical concepts yielding analyses that aid the understanding of underlying principles. The present paper is a tutorial exposition of one of these new concepts, namely mitigation bandwidth, which is emerging as a key signal parameter for the effective design and analysis of multiple-user spread spectrum transmission in the mobile channel.

Principles of mitigation bandwidth with application to spread spectrum communication in the mobile channel

A means is proposed for attaining the twin goals of a rectangular power spectral density (PSD) and a constant-carrier envelope for direct-sequence code division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) waveforms. Mitigation bandwidth is shown to be an especially appropriate metric for CDMA waveforms. Shaping of the PSD structure is explored using the M-ary orthogonal CPFSK modulation format. An important consequence for this type of signal is that the Shannon channel capacity is maximized when the PSD is made rectangular. The results of this exploration highlight the steady decrease in out-of-band power as the number of bits per symbol is increased.

Spread-spectrum signals: attaining rectangular power spectral density with constant carrier envelope

In a conventional communication system in which analog information such as speech or video modulates a sinusoidal carrier, the presence of channel multipath causes frequency-selective distortion if its delay spread exceeds the reciprocal of the analog-signal bandwidth. By contrast, this paper considers the use of a pseudo-noise carrier, together with a receiver that has a multipath-matched RAKE filter in tandem with correlation against a replica of the pseudo-noise. It is shown that such a signal processing combination can convey an analog signal over non-time-varying multipath of practically arbitrary delay spread, without appreciable distortion. This is true only provided, that the multipath possesses a reasonably wide frequency-response support, even while it well may fade frequency-selectively. The suggested technique has existed in a largely theoretical form. Possible applications could be to signaling at high information rates over ionospheric channels (if frequency allocations become broader), or to cellular telephony when it is disturbed by reflections from buildings or terrain.
