The biology of the mulberry silkworm (Mcon-1) was studied on mulberry variety S-30 under laboratory conditions during November 2017 to December 2017. The eggs were laid singly with gummy substance which consists of an average of 331.30±29.79 eggs per female. The eggs hatched in 8.67±1.03 days with 95.89±2.83 percent egg hatching. The larva moulted four times to become fully mature in 23.77±0.77 days. The pre-pupal and pupal periods were 2.29±0.46 and 10.20±0.92 days, respectively. The average pre-oviposition, oviposition and post-oviposition period were recorded 6.87±0.83, 19.73±2.08 and 114.99±6.79 hrs, respectively. The average longevity of the female and male recorded 141.72±6.73 and 111.64±4.46 hrs, respectively. The sex ratio was 1: 1.3 (Male: Female). The life span of female found to be relatively more than male moth.

Híbridos y líneas endocriadas de gusanos de seda (Lepidoptera: Bombyx mori L.): resultados productivos preliminares

Bivoltine silk excels in quality and productivity but do not display the crop stability in the field. The main reason attributed to such instability is that the bivoltines suffer badly in adverse conditions, prevailed in the field. In order to study the potentiality of newly developed bivoltine hybrids under simulated conditions of farmers before recommending them for field evaluation the present study was taken. In the present study six new bivoltine hybrids developed at Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute (CSRTI), Mysore along with the control hybrid were assessed under simulated conditions of farmers in a large scale at CSRTI for their various economic traits. The hybrids evaluated expressed a varied degree for the economic traits over the control hybrid, CSR2 x CSR4. Among the hybrids evaluated two hybrids recorded the average multiple traits evaluation index value of more than 50 viz., CSR50 x CSR51 (67.25) and D2 x D13 (53.84). Further these new hybrids recorded higher improvement over control in respect of cocoon yield (28.17 and 10.81 %), single cocoon weight (18.59 and 4.75 %), cocoon shell weight (25.65 and 7.591 %), cocoon shell percent (6.00 and 2.66 %) and filament length (18.13 and 6.53 %). Further the cocoons of these two hybrids have exhibited uniformity in cocoon size. Overall data indicate the superiority in the performance of CSR50 x CSR51 and it has profound influence in expressing the full potentiality in the field compared to other hybrids studied.

Identifying parents and generating hybrids with high combining ability for yielding fresh cocoon and raw silk in silkworm ( Bombxy mori L.)

El mejoramiento genetico en la produccion comercial de seda es un pilar fundamental para lograr incrementos de productividad y calidad del producto. En la Argentina la actividad es incipiente y escasa la oferta de huevos de calidad y productividad comprobada. El laboratorio de seda de la Facultad de Agronomia de la Universidad de Buenos Aires trabaja desde el 2004 orientandose para suplir esta necesidad. En el presente trabajo se evaluaron caracteristicas productivas de variedades sinteticas obtenidas por seleccion recurrente. Se utilizo un diseno en bloques al azar, en el que las variedades GABY y ALICIA se compararon con la poblacion de origen NORMA. Cada genotipo se dispuso en tres cajas de crianza, observando al final del ciclo 30 capullos por caja. Para las tres variables estudiadas, LC: largo del capullo; PCE: peso del capullo entero y PC: peso de la corteza se encontraron diferencias altamente significativas de las medias de las variedades respecto a la poblacion de origen, y de las variedades entre si. La mejor respuesta correspondio a GABY, con LC= 31,77+/-2,09 mm, PCE=1,15+/-0,14 g y PC=0,22+/- 0,03g. Le siguio ALICIA, con LC=30,04+/-2,15 mm, PCE=1,04+/-0,18 g, y PC=0,19+/-0,04. En tercer lugar se ubico NORMA con LC=29,32+/-1,87mm, PCE=0,91+/-0,19g y PC=0,17+/-0,04g. Los valores obtenidos estan dentro de los rangos reportados para razas puras, y son sensiblemente inferiores a los reportados en hibridos.

Cette etude a ete realisee pour mettre au point des lignees polyvoltines bisexuelles du ver a soie Bombyx mori L avec une origine androgene. On met au point les lignees en croisant les mâles F2 obtenus a partir d'un hybride polyvotin BL 68 × BL 69 avec une race polyvoltine « Nistari » et on expose les œufs a 38° C pendant 200 minutes. Les larves qui eclosent a partir de ces œufs expriment les caracteres paternels. On met au point cinq lignees polyvoltines par des croisements de retour repetes avec des mâles androgenes pendant plusieurs generations. Deux hybrides polyvoltin x bivoltin AGL3 × CSR 2 et AGL 5 × CSR 2 s'averent prometteurs. Cette methode s'avere utile pour raccourcir le cycle de lignage et pour produire des lignees de vers a soie homozygotes, qui sont d'une importance primordiale dans le lignage du ver a soie.
