Context. Gamma Doradus (hereafter $\gamma$~Dor) stars are gravity-mode pulsators whose periods carry information about the internal structure of the star. These periods are especially sensitive to the internal rotation and chemical mixing, two processes that are currently not well constrained in the theory of stellar evolution. Aims. We aim to identify the pulsation modes and deduce the internal rotation and buoyancy travel time for 106 $\gamma$ Dor stars observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission in its southern continuous viewing zone (hereafter S-CVZ). We rely on 140 previously detected period-spacing patterns, that is, series of (near-)consecutive pulsation mode periods. Methods. We used the asymptotic expression to compute gravity-mode frequencies for ranges of the rotation rate and buoyancy travel time that cover the physical range in $\gamma$~Dor stars. Those frequencies were fitted to the observed period-spacing patterns by minimising a custom cost function. The effects of rotation were evaluated using the traditional approximation of rotation, using the stellar pulsation code GYRE. Results. We obtained the pulsation mode identification, internal rotation and buoyancy travel time for 60 TESS $\gamma$~Dor stars. For the remaining 46 targets, the detected patterns are either too short or contained too many missing modes for unambiguous mode identification, and longer light curves are required. For the successfully analysed stars, we found that period-spacing patterns from 1-yr long TESS light curves can constrain the internal rotation and buoyancy travel time to a precision of $\rm 0.03~d^{-1}$ and 400s, respectively, which is about half as precise as literature results based on 4-yr Kepler light curves of $\gamma$~Dor stars.

Internal rotation and buoyancy travel time of 60 γ Doradus stars from uninterrupted TESS light curves spanning 352 days

The empirical distribution of projected rotational velocities (vsini) in massive O-type stars is characterized by a dominant slow velocity component and a tail of fast rotators. Binary interaction has been proposed to play a dominant role in the formation of this tail. We perform a complete and homogeneous search for empirical signatures of binarity in a sample of 54 fast-rotating stars with the aim of evaluating this hypothesis. This working sample has been extracted from a larger sample of 415 Galactic O-type stars which covers the full range of vsini values. We use new and archival multi-epoch spectra in order to detect spectroscopic binary systems. We complement this information with Gaia proper motions and TESS photometric data to aid in the identification of runaway stars and eclipsing binaries, respectively. The identified fraction of single-lined spectroscopic binary (SB1) systems and apparently single stars among the fast-rotating sample is $\sim$18% and $\sim$70%, respectively. When comparing these percentages with those corresponding to the slow-rotating sample we find that our sample of fast rotators is characterized by a slightly larger percentage of SB1 systems ($\sim$18% vs. $\sim$13%) and a considerably smaller fraction of clearly detected SB2 systems (8% vs. 33%). Overall, there seems to be a clear deficit of spectroscopic binaries (SB1+SB2) among fast-rotating O-type stars ($\sim$26% vs. $\sim$46%). On the contrary, the fraction of runaway stars is significantly higher in the fast-rotating domain ($\sim$33-50%) than among those stars with vsini<200 km/s. Lastly, almost 65% of the apparently single fast-rotating stars are runaways. Our empirical results seem to be in good agreement with the idea that the tail of fast-rotating O-type stars (with vsini>200 km/s) is mostly populated by post-interaction binary products.

The IACOB project. VIII. Searching for empirical signatures of binarity in fast rotating O-type stars.

Context. Thanks to the high-precision photometry from space missions such as Kepler and TESS, tidal perturbations and tilting of pulsations have been detected in more than a dozen binary systems. However, only two of these were g-mode pulsators. Aims. We aim to detect tidally perturbed g modes in additional binary systems and characterise them observationally. Methods. We perform a custom data reduction of the available Kepler and TESS photometry of a well-studied sample of 35 binary systems with gamma Doradus pulsators. For each target, we model the binary signal using a sum of 100 sine waves, with frequencies at orbital harmonics, and measure significant pulsation frequencies by iteratively prewhitening the residual light curve. Pulsations are labelled as tidally perturbed g modes if they are part of both period-spacing patterns and orbital-frequency-spaced multiplets. After visual inspection and confirmation, the properties of these targets and g modes are characterised. Results. We detect tidally perturbed g-mode pulsations for five short-period binaries that are circularised and (almost) synchronously rotating: KIC3228863, KIC3341457, KIC4947528, KIC9108579, and KIC12785282. Tidally perturbed g modes that occur within the same star and have the same mode identification (k,m), are found to have near-identical relative amplitude and phase modulations, which are within their respective 1-sigma uncertainties also identical for the Kepler and TESS photometric passbands. By contrast, pulsations with different mode identification (k,m) are found to exhibit different modulations. Moreover, the observed amplitude and phase modulations are correlated, indicating that the binary tides primarily distort g-mode amplitudes on the stellar surface. The phase modulations are then primarily a geometric effect of the integration of the stellar flux over the visible stellar surface. (abbreviated)

Tidally perturbed gravity-mode pulsations in a sample of close eclipsing binaries

Context. The physical mechanisms driving the transport of angular momentum in stars are not fully understood, as current models cannot explain the observed stellar rotation profiles across all stages of evolution. Aims. By making use of pulsating F-type dwarfs, we aim to (i) observationally calibrate the efficiency of angular momentum transport, assuming a constant uniform viscosity, and (ii) test how well state-of-the-art rotating stellar models with angular momentum (AM) transport by rotationally induced processes can explain observed rotation profiles. In both cases, the aim is to simultaneously reproduce the measured near-core rotation and core-to-surface rotation ratio. Methods. Asteroseismic modelling is applied to a sample of seven slowly rotating pulsators in order to derive (core) masses and ages from their gravity-mode oscillations. This work focuses on the main sequence (MS), using models that start with an initial uniform rotation frequency at the start of core-hydrogen burning, which is a free parameter. Two treatments of AM transport are considered: (i) a constant uniform viscosity, and (ii) rotationally induced processes (including the Spruit-Tayler dynamo). Next, the initial rotation frequency of each star is derived from the observed present-day near-core rotation frequency for both treatments. Results. Asteroseismic modelling of gravity mode periods reveals that all seven slowly rotating stars (one of which is not further modelled) in the sample are near the end of core-hydrogen burning. To explain the near-core rotation rate at the inferred age, initial rotation frequencies at the zero-age main sequence need to be below 10% of the initial critical break-up frequency. The derived initial rotation frequencies are consistent with previous works. Conclusions. A diffusive approximation of angular momentum transport can in general explain the observed rotation profiles of the six slowly rotating F-type dwarfs for average values of the viscosity of between 2 × 10 5 and 5 × 10 7 cm 2 s −1 or when the viscosity is computed from rotationally induced mechanisms. Yet, for three stars in the sample, the core-to-surface rotation fraction from rotationally induced mechanisms is predicted to be higher than observed. 

Calibrating angular momentum transport in intermediate-mass stars from gravity-mode asteroseismology

Modern stellar structure and evolution theory experiences a lack of observational calibrations for the interior physics of intermediate- and high-mass stars. This leads to discrepancies between theoretical predictions and observed phenomena mostly related to angular momentum and element transport. Analyses of large samples of massive stars connecting state-of-the-art spectroscopy to asteroseismology may provide clues on how to improve our understanding of their interior structure. We aim to deliver a sample of O- and B-type stars at metallicity regimes of the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) galaxies with accurate atmospheric parameters from high-resolution spectroscopy, along with a detailed investigation of line-profile broadening, for future asteroseismic studies. After describing the general aims of our two Large Programs, we develop dedicated methodology to fit spectral lines and deduce accurate global stellar parameters from high-resolution multi-epoch UVES and FEROS spectroscopy. We use the best available atmosphere models for three regimes covered by our global sample, given its breadth in terms of mass, effective temperature, and evolutionary stage. Aside from accurate atmospheric parameters and locations in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, we deliver detailed analyses of macroturbulent line broadening, including estimation of the radial and tangential components. We find that these two components are difficult to disentangle from spectra with signal-to-noise ratios below 250. Future asteroseismic modelling of the deep interior physics of the most promising stars in our sample will improve the existing dearth of such knowledge for large samples of OB stars, including those of low metallicity in the LMC.

The ESO UVES/FEROS Large Programs of TESS OB pulsators. I. Global stellar parameters from high-resolution spectroscopy

Context. The theory of stellar evolution presents shortcomings when confronted with asteroseismic probes of interior physical prop- erties. The differences between observations and theory are often great because stellar models have mainly been calibrated from observables connected to the surface of stars. Period-spacing patterns caused by gravity modes are a particularly powerful asteroseis- mic tool that are useful for probing the near-core rotation and mixing of chemical elements in main-sequence stars with convective cores. Aims. We aim to compose a catalog of intermediate-mass stars in the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) southern continuous viewing zone (CVZ) to reveal period-spacing patterns caused by gravity modes for use in future asteroseismic modeling. Methods. TESS full frame images (FFI) were inspected to select stars of intermediate- and high-mass using color-magnitude criteria. Light curves were extracted from custom masks per star, adopting stringent constraints on the aperture masks and contamination. The extracted light curves were subject to iterative prewhitening to detect gravity modes. We developed a method relying on the assumption that period spacings are an approximately linear function of the mode periods to build a template pattern. This template was used to extract the patterns and their uncertainties, relying on a bootstrap approach. Results. Our TESS catalog of high-quality period-spacing patterns is the first of its kind and contains 140 gravity-mode patterns in 106 γ Dor stars and two slowly pulsating B-type (SPB) stars. Half of these patterns contain seven or more measured mode periods and the longest pattern contains 20 modes. We provide the community with a convenient software tool to search for period-spacing patterns and to process the extracted light curves. Conclusions. Our catalog offers a fruitful starting point for future gravity-mode asteroseismology of rotating dwarfs with convective cores in the southern hemisphere.

Detection of period-spacing patterns due to the gravity modes of rotating dwarfs in the TESS southern continuous viewing zone

Eclipsing binary systems provide the opportunity to measure the fundamental parameters of their component stars in a stellar-model-independent way. This makes them ideal candidates for testing and calibrating theories of stellar structure and (tidal) evolution. Large photometric (space) surveys provide a wealth of data for both the discovery and the analysis of these systems. Even without spectroscopic follow-up there is often enough information in their photometric time series to warrant analysis, especially if there is an added value present in the form of intrinsic variability, such as pulsations. Our goal is to implement and validate a framework for the homogeneous analysis of large numbers of eclipsing binary light curves, such as the numerous high-duty-cycle observations from space missions like TESS. The aim of this framework is to be quick and simple to run and to limit the user's time investment when obtaining, amongst other parameters, orbital eccentricities. We developed a new and fully automated methodology for the analysis of eclipsing binary light curves with or without additional intrinsic variability. Our method includes a fast iterative pre-whitening procedure that results in a list of extracted sinusoids that is broadly applicable for purposes other than eclipses. After eclipses are identified and measured, orbital and stellar parameters are measured under the assumption of spherical stars of uniform brightness. We tested our methodology in two settings: a set of synthetic light curves with known input and the catalogue of Kepler eclipsing binaries. The synthetic tests show that we can reliably recover the frequencies and amplitudes of the sinusoids included in the signal as well as the input binary parameters, albeit to varying degrees of accuracy. Recovery of the tangential component of eccentricity is the most accurate and precise. Kepler results confirm a robust determination of orbital periods, with 80.5 of periods matching the catalogued ones. We present the eccentricities for this analysis and show that they broadly follow the theoretically expected pattern as a function of the orbital period. Our analysis methodology is shown to be capable of analysing large numbers of eclipsing binary light curves with no user intervention, and in doing so provide a basis for a further in-depth analysis of systems of particular interest as well as for statistical analysis at the sample level. Furthermore, the computational performance of the frequency analysis, extracting hundreds of sinusoids from Kepler light curves in a few hours, demonstrates its value as a tool for a field like asteroseismology.
