Usage of stable suspensions of deagglomerated fine powders is shown to be a prerequisite to take full advantage of the potential of electrophoretic deposition. The method is improved further when starting from suspensions which are additionally sieved through a 20 μm sieve into a ‘cleansed and closed’ deposition apparatus. Smooth zirconia tubes with green dimensions of 110 mm length, 0.5–1.5 mm wall thickness, 34 mm outer diameter have been produced under these conditions. The fired tubes had a characteristic strength of σ c = 420 M Pa and Weibull modulus m = 15, as calculated from burst pressure of whole tubes.

Homogeneous functional ceramic components through electrophoretic deposition from stable colloidal suspensions—I. Basic concepts and application to zirconia

A silver palladium (Ag/Pd) alloy powder is used as an example material to illustrate potential applications of electrophoretic deposition (EPD) in electronics manufacturing, in particular the forming of multilayer devices. The dispersion and deposition of the Ag/Pd powder in acetic acid is characterized. It is found that deposition can be explained by the direct action of electrostatic force on individual particles. Depositions of this Ag/Pd powder are then used to demonstrate: forming of a continuous layer on a rigid substrate; forming of continuous layers in laminated and sintered BaTiO3 multilayers; and incorporation of patterned depositions into a multilayer by either overcasting the patterned deposition with a particulate slip to form a multicomponent tape, or direct lamination of the patterned deposition to a low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) tape. It is shown that electrically conducting layers can be formed at an average thickness of only two times the diameter of the starting powder. Continuous conductor lines thirty times the average diameter of the starting powder were formed.

Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde untersucht, ob der Einsatz elektrischer Felder nach der Formgebung die Produktion keramischer Bauteile verbessern kann. Hierzu wurden zwei Verfahren ausgewahlt. Das feldgestutzte Sintern (FAST, SPS) ist eine effiziente Sintermethode, da die Prozesszeiten, auf Grund der hohen Heizraten und kurzen Haltezeiten auf Sintertemperatur, im Vergleich zu konventionellen Sintermethoden, um ein Vielfaches verkurzt werden. So entsteht ein okonomischer Vorteil. Die kurzen Prozesszeiten fuhren zu einer Unterdruckung des Kornwachstums und der applizierte hohe Druck fuhrt gleichzeitig zu einer maximalen Verdichtung. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit sollte ein Beitrag zur Klarung des Beitrags des E-Feldes zur Prozessverbesserung untersucht werden.
Im zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit wurde der Einfluss elektrischer Hochspannungsfelder auf die Grukorper- und Schichttrocknung untersucht. Dies ist notwendig, da die Trocknung von Grunkorpern und Schichten vor der Sinterung den kritischen Verfahrensschritt wahrend der Produktion darstellt. Eine Beschleunigung des Trocknungsprozesses in Abhangigkeit von Elektrodengeometrie und Korona-Strom konnte gemessen werden. Die an getrankten Grunkorpern abgeleiteten Ergebnisse wurden anschliesend auf die Schichttrocknung ubertragen und zur schnelleren Trocknung dicker Schichten optimiert. 
Two possibilities of applying electric fields to the ceramic production process after forming of green bodies are investigated. First one is the field assisted sintering technique (FAST, SPS). The influence of the electric field on the sintering behaviour of nanoscaled powders using a modified experimental setup of FAST is investigated. The electric current path is restricted to the powder mould by electric insulation while thermal energy is supplied by an outer heating element. A DOE method was applied to investigate the influence of sintering parameters. The results show no impact of the field on the microstructure of the powders under investigation.
The second investigation explores the enhancement of drying. Solvent-based forming technologies like EPD, tape casting or dip coating result in high-performance processing. These technologies allow the production of crack-free green bodies and coatings with high densities and contour accuracy. The critical point during production of solventbased ceramics is the drying step. Before sintering complete evaporation is needed to inhibit sintering defects like bursting of the green body. The aim of the present work is to show how high intensity electric fields influence the drying of green bodies and coatings. It will be shown the drying process is accelerated according to the electric field geometry and corona current. This method is furthermore applied to optimize the drying of coatings.
