Rotational bands in the doubly odd nucleus 134Pr

Rotational states have been identified in $_{51}^{111}\mathrm{Sb}$ for the first time. Three decoupled (\ensuremath{\Delta}I=2) bands extending to over 1 MeV in rotational frequency have been observed. At the highest frequencies, the ${\mathit{scrJ}}^{(2)}$ moments of inertia for these three bands are seen to decrease steadily to unexpectedly low values; this is interpreted as evidence for a novel form of band termination. One of these bands is interpreted as being based on the \ensuremath{\pi}${\mathit{h}}_{11/2}$ orbital coupled to a deformed [(\ensuremath{\pi}${\mathit{g}}_{9/2}$${)}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}2}$\ensuremath{\bigotimes}(\ensuremath{\pi}${\mathit{g}}_{7/2}$)${]}_{0+}$ state of the $_{50}^{110}\mathrm{Sn}$ core. The interaction strength for the alignment of a pair of ${\mathit{h}}_{11/2}$ neutrons has been extracted and compared with calculations. Two possible quasiparticle configurations are discussed for the other decoupled bands. Two strongly coupled (\ensuremath{\Delta}I=1) bands have been identified and both shown to involve the [(\ensuremath{\pi}${\mathit{g}}_{9/2}$${)}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$\ensuremath{\bigotimes}(\ensuremath{\pi}${\mathit{g}}_{7/2}$${)}^{2}$] configuration. A large number of spherical states have also been observed, which can be explained on the basis of valence protons coupled to spherical states in the $^{110}\mathrm{Sn}$ core.

Coexisting structures in 119I

A ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}{=8}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collective rotational band has been established upon the 6 $\ensuremath{\mu}$s isomeric state in the very neutron-deficient nucleus ${}^{138}\mathrm{Gd}.$ The band was observed using a technique involving the correlation of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions across the isomeric state. The single-particle configuration of the isomer has been deduced from the $\ensuremath{\Delta}I=2$ to $\ensuremath{\Delta}I=1$ intensity branching ratios. In addition, a series of other $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray transitions were observed which are reasoned to be part of a higher-lying four quasiparticle structure which decays through the ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}{=8}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ isomeric state. The properties of the ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}{=8}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ band are discussed in relation to the systematic properties of ${K}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}{=8}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ bands in the neighboring $N=74$ isotones.

Identification of the K$^{\pi}$ = 8$^{-}$ Rotational Band in $^{138}$Gd

High spin states in {sup 113}I were studied with the {sup 58}Ni({sup 58}Ni, 3{ital p}{gamma}) reaction at 240 MeV, using the EUROGAM array in Daresbury, United Kingdom, with 45 Ge detectors. A total of five deformed intruder bands extending to spins {ital I} ranging from (73/2--89/2){h_bar} have been identified, all of which reach frequencies {h_bar}{omega}{gt}1.0 MeV and excitation energies {similar_to}25 MeV. A gradual dropoff of the dynamic moment of inertia {ital scrI}{sup (2)} with increasing rotational frequency has been observed and attributed to a mode of ``soft`` band termination involving valence particle alignment. In this process, the nucleus progresses gradually, over many transitions, towards a noncollective oblate ({gamma}=+60{degree}) band terminating state.

Intruder bands in (Z=53) I113:Band termination interpretation

The 92Mo(27Al, 2p2n gamma ) reaction has been used to populate high-spin states in 115I. The dominant structures are associated with pi h112/(550)1/2- and pi g92/(404)9/2+ orbitals. At the highest spins, favoured states with Ipi =43/2- and 51/2-, associated with non-collective oblate configurations are yrast. The systematics of such states in the odd-A 115-121I isotopes are discussed.

Collective and non-collective high-spin states in 115I

Six rotational bands have been established in 136Sm following heavy-ion induced reactions carried out at the Nuclear Structure Facility, Daresbury. The yrast band has been observed up to Ipi =(24+) and undergoes three band-crossings. A band was observed built on the low-lying 2+ gamma-vibrational state, in addition to two negative parity sidebands built on two-quasiproton excitations. A dipole band showing the characteristics of collective oblate rotation was also established. The results are discussed in terms of total Routhian surface and cranked Woods-Saxon model calculations.
