This study compares associations between demographic profiles, long bone lengths, bone mineral content, and frequencies of stress indicators in the preadult populations of two medieval skeletal assemblages from Denmark One is from a leprosarium, and thus probably represents a disadvantaged group (Naestved) The other comes from a normal, and in comparison rather privileged, medieval community (AEbelholt) Previous studies of the adult population indicated differences between the two skeletal collections with regard to mortality, dental size, and metabolic and specific infectious disease The two samples were analyzed against the view known as the "osteological paradox" (Wood et al [1992] Curr Anthropol 33:343-370), according to which skeletons displaying pathological modification are likely to represent the healthier individuals of a population, whereas those without lesions would have died without acquiring modifications as a result of a depressed immune response Results reveal that older age groups among the preadults from Naestved are shorter and have less bone mineral content than their peers from AEbelholt On average, the Naestved children have a higher prevalence of stress indicators, and in some cases display skeletal signs of leprosy This is likely a result of the combination of compromised health and social disadvantage, thus supporting a more traditional interpretation The study provides insights into the health of children from two different biocultural settings of medieval Danish society and illustrates the importance of comparing samples of single age groups

The relationship between childhood illnesses and growth increments in length and weight was investigated in a 13-month birth cohort of rural Mexican children. Increments in length and weight for each year from birth to three years were related to high and low frequencies of reported time ill during the same period. Seventy-two of the 276 children had already been characterized as exhibiting "growth failure" relative to other members of the cohorts, and this was considered as a separate factor in the study. We found that upper and lower respiratory infection did not affect incremental gain in height or weight. A high frequency of diarrheal infection was found to reduce weight gain, although gain in height was not affected. Relative to the total sample, the average child with a high frequency of diarrhea achieved only 95 per cent of expected body weight age three; a chidl with both growth failure and high diarrheal frequency reached only 90 per cent of expected body weight at age three.

Studied were 8,024 Southern Chinese children, 4,047 boys and 3,977 girls, age 6 to 19 years. Skeletal maturation was assessed according to the Greulich-Pyle standards (8). Compared with the standards, our children were retarded in skeletal maturation in the early ages but more advanced in the later ages. The children were stratified into three socioeconomic groups (high, middle, low). Socioeconomic differentials in skeletal maturation were presented; they were subjected to t tests for significance. A clear effect of socioeconomic conditions was shown. Correlations of height and weight with skeletal maturation were illustrated by various methods.
