The reaction $^{9}\mathrm{B}\mathrm{e}(^{28}\mathrm{M}\mathrm{g},^{26}\mathrm{N}\mathrm{e}+\ensuremath{\gamma})X$ has been studied at $82\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{M}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}/\mathrm{n}\mathrm{u}\mathrm{c}\mathrm{l}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{o}\mathrm{n}$ together with two similar cases, $^{30}\mathrm{M}\mathrm{g}$ and $^{34}\mathrm{S}\mathrm{i}$. Strong evidence that the reactions are direct is offered by the parallel-momentum distributions of the reaction residues and by the inclusive cross sections. The pattern of the partial cross sections for $^{28}\mathrm{M}\mathrm{g}$ suggests the presence of correlations. A preliminary theoretical discussion based on eikonal reaction theory and the many-body shell model is presented. The reaction holds great promise for the study of neutron-rich nuclei.

The cross sections for the stripping of two correlated nucleons from light and medium-mass nuclei are considered. Such reactions are of interest both as a means for populating and identifying low-lying excited states of very exotic nuclear species and as a potential direct spectroscopic probe of two-nucleon correlations in such systems. A calculation scheme that combines the full shell model two-nucleon spectroscopic amplitudes with eikonal reaction theory is presented. The theoretical predictions of the method, and of more approximate schemes, are compared with new data on two-proton removal from $^{28}\mathrm{Mg}$. The combined full shell model structure amplitudes and reaction dynamics predictions are in good agreement with the available measurements. First indications of the sensitivity of the reaction mechanism to the spatial and angular momentum structure of the stripped two-nucleon wave functions are also discussed and clarified.

Correlated two-nucleon stripping reactions

Proton inelastic scattering on the neutron-rich nucleus $^{32}\mathrm{Mg}$ has been studied at 46.5 MeV/nucleon in inverse kinematics. Populated states were identified by measuring de-excitation $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays, in which five new states were found by $\ensuremath{\gamma}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ coincidence analyses. By analyzing the angular differential cross sections via coupled-channel calculations, their spins and parities were constrained and the amplitudes for each transition were extracted. The spin and parity of the 2321-keV state was assigned as ${4}_{1}^{+}$. The ratio between the energies of the ${2}_{1}^{+}$ and ${4}_{1}^{+}$ states indicates that $^{32}\mathrm{Mg}$ is a transitional nucleus rather than an axially deformed rigid rotor. The collectivities in the nucleus $^{32}\mathrm{Mg}$ with $N=20$ are discussed based on the results obtained in the present experiment.

The structure of neutron-rich light nuclei around N = 20 and 28 has been investigated at GANIL by means of in-beam gamma-spectroscopy using fragmentation reactions of 36S and 48Ca beams on a Be target. Gamma-decay of relatively high-lying excited states have been measured for the first time in nuclei around 32Mg and 44S. Level schemes are proposed and discussed for a large number of these neutron-rich nuclei around N = 20 and N = 28.
