Improved human islet isolation using a new enzyme blend, liberase.
TL;DR: Islets isolated with Liberase enzyme, assessed both in vitro and in vivo, revealed a functional profile similar to that of islets separated with collagenase, suggesting a gentler enzymatic action and better preservation of anatomical integrity.

Transplantation of allogeneic islets of Langerhans in the rat liver: effects of macrophage depletion on graft survival and microenvironment activation.
Rita Bottino,L. Fernandez,L. Fernandez,Camillo Ricordi,R. Lehmann,Min Fu Tsan,R. Oliver,Luca Inverardi +7 more
TL;DR: Evidence is provided to support the concept that macrophages play a key role in early inflammatory events known to adversely affect islet engraftment and suggest that manipulation of nonspecific immune activation by inhibition of macrophage function may facilitate hepatic engraftedment of islet allografts.

Long-term function (6 years) of islet allografts in type 1 diabetes.
R. Alejandro,R. Lehmann,Camillo Ricordi,Camillo Ricordi,Norma S. Kenyon,M.C. Angelico,George W. Burke,Violet Esquenazi,Violet Esquenazi,Jose Nery,Arthur Betancourt,S.S. Kong,Joshua Miller,Joshua Miller,Daniel H. Mintz +14 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that, in conjunction with small dosages of exogenous insulin, a functioning islet allograft can result in near-normalization of blood glucose levels and significant improvement in HbAlc, and support the continued application of islet allotransplantation as a treatment modality for type 1 diabetic patients.

The effects of maintenance doses of FK506 versus cyclosporin A on glucose and lipid metabolism after orthotopic liver transplantation.
L. Fernandez,R. Lehmann,Livio Luzi,Alberto Battezzati,Maria C. Angelico,Camillo Ricordi,Andreas G. Tzakis,Rodolfo Alejandro +7 more
TL;DR: There are no major metabolic differences on low maintenance doses between FK-506 and CsA and both immunosuppressant agents contribute to the development of PTDM at different levels.
