A hammer mechanism which undergoes reciprocating motion across platen-supported paper webs in a dot matrix printer effects printing by momentarily energizing coils associated with selected resilient hammer elements mounted on a common magnetic structure to neutralize a magnetic field from the common magnetic structure and release the hammer elements from a retracted position. Each end of the common magnetic structure extends to define dummy hammer positions adjacent the first hammer element on each end, providing uniform magnetic field strength to the end hammer elements and to all hammer elements in between. The hammer elements are fabricated and mounted as individual elements of resilient magnetic material with mounting of the elements being accomplished in pairs using a common plate for each pair and screws which have a portion of reduced diameter directly behind the head thereof to provide easy access to the shaft of the screw in the event of breakage during installation. The hammer mechanism is surrounded by a housing having a front face adjacent the hammer elements which is of magnetic material to increase the flux density for hammer elements of given size and which has an opening therein equipped with a filter to permit the exit of cooling air introduced under pressure into the housing while preventing contaminants from getting inside the housing.

Print hammer mechanism

An impact printer of the dot matrix type capable of printing in either the forward or reverse direction. Means are provided for determining the position of the print head at any given instant. Upon completion of a line of print the print head is abruptly halted. The next line of characters is examined to determine the end points of its character field. Comparisons are made to determine whether the print head lies within or beyond the end points. In cases where the print head lies beyond the end points of the character field, the printing occurs by moving the head in a direction toward the closest end point and then printing. If the print head occupies the location between the end points the position of the head is loaded into a pair of counters which are simultaneously counted up and down respectively. The outputs of the counters are continuously compared against the values representing the end point locations whereupon the first favorable comparison determines the shortest distance of print head travel for starting printing. High speed electronic circuitry is provided for storing data representing the next line to be printed in both forward and reverse formats whereupon the decision as to the direction in which data is printed automatically controls the appropriate storage medium. Novel video detection means is provided both for determining the direction of head movement at any instant and for controlling the printing positions. The use of delayed strobes derived directly from the video control allows printing to start immediately from the rest position, and provides accurate registration of delayed strobes relative to strobe pulses regardless of the velocity of the carriage. The printer has the ability of printing expanded characters and includes electronic circuitry to prevent data in the expanded character format from being lost in cases where the inputted data representing the expanded character format exceeds the print line capacity of the printer whereby any overflow will automatically be printed on the second succeeding line of print.

Random access line printer

An apparatus for reproducing a digitized image from a semiconductor memory onto a light sensitive material using a plurality of movable equally spaced light sources. The sources direct light beams through apertures in a mask, movable with the sources, onto a sheet of the material disposed on a drum. The light sources emit beams of variable intensity responsive to image data recorded in memory devices. As the drum rotates, the mask and light sources move in unison longitudinally at a rate of one pixel width per drum revolution. One embodiment of a recording module comprises only light sources and mask, while another embodiment also includes a pair of lens arrays that image the beam onto the sheet. There are an integral number of pixel widths between adjacent beams. A plurality of parallel lines on the mask and a scanner fixed relative to the drum sense the relative position between the mask an the drum for providing corrective feedback information to a motor moving the mask and light sources. Color recording may be provided with a mask having three rows of apertures in which each row transmits a different one of red, green, and blue light beams. The film image contains a mosaic of pixels with each pixel mapping an element of memory.

Digital image reproduction

A control device for a matrix printer. At the beginning of a line, a chaining unit is filled with a starting column address, a starting row address and a starting character address, the latter being to address a line buffer containing data of a line of characters. The line buffer supplies a character signal which addresses a character generator having column addresses and row addresses as further sub-addresses. The chaining unit contains data about the relevant row advances and column advances. Between the displacement of the movable member over one column distance, the chaining circuit successively calculates dot data for all recording elements, said data being serially loaded into a dot register. When the next column position is reached, the dot data are used to activate the recording elements. The character generator has at least two sets of characters of different dimensions, and the chaining unit has for each character set at least one mode position for translating the column advances and row advances into addresses for the character generator. The advances may be embodied in a counter or a read-only memory.

Control device for a matrix printer

A high-speed printer is operative for printing alphanumerical characters by selecting dots of a matrix composed of dots arranged in identical parallel columns which are spaced from each other in the direction of a line of alphanumerical characters to be printed. The printer includes a printing head including printing elements arranged in form of a single one of the mentioned columns. A drive motor moves the printing head along a predetermined path extending in the direction of the line of characters to be printed. A detector arrangement detects the arrival of the printing head at successive predetermined locations along the path of movement of the latter. A synchronizing arrangement generates successive synchronizing signals in response to detection by the detector arrangement of the arrival of the printing head at successive ones of said predetermined locations. A character-generating unit connected to the synchronizing arrangement receives successive synchronizing signals and furnishes to the printing elements successive groups of signals, each group signifying which dots of the column are to be printed, and each group being furnished to the printing elements in synchronism with the receipt by the charactergenerating unit of one of said synchronizing signals.

High-speed printer

An elongated paper document is advanced preferably at a constant rate although incremental advancement may be employed if desired. A plurality of reciprocating solenoid assemblies are mounted in stationary fashion in a closely spaced arrangement and are each provided with reciprocating print wires for impacting an inked ribbon against a paper document. The free ends of the print wires which impact the inked ribbon are slidably mounted within suitable bearings provided within an elongated movable plate with the bearings arranged to align the free ends of the print wires along an imaginary straight line. Means are provided for moving the movable plate substantially in a horizontal direction transverse to the movement of the paper document so as to selectively print a row of dots. The movable member may be guided along a slight incline to compensate for constant paper movement during a printing operation. After completion of the first row, the movable member is reset to the start position which together with the advancement of the paper document places the printer in readiness for selective printing of the next row of dots. Seven rows of dots with a five column width each define alphanumeric characters. Alternatively, the printer may be employed for curve or graph plotting.
