MARCONI-FUSION: The new high performance computing facility for European nuclear fusion modelling

The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) aims at providing a very intense neutron source (10 17 neutron/s) to test the structure materials for the future fusion reactors beyond ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor). Such a source will be driven using 2 deuteron accelerators of 125 mA cw each up to 40 MeV impinging into a lithium liquid curtain, thus producing very high neutron flux with a similar spectrum as those expected in fusion reactors. A validation phase was decided for this 10 MW facility consisting in the construction of part of the accelerator facility, the so-called LIPAc (Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator). LIPAc, which is in construction phase, will accelerate a 125 mA cw beam deuteron up to the first of the four superconductive modules foreseen for IFMIF. The 9 MeV beam will be driven through the HEBT to the beam dump. This facility is currently under construction at Rokkasho (Japan). In this contribution, we describe the beam diagnostics foreseen for this 1.125 MW prototype accelerator emphasizing the challenges encountered and present solutions how to overcome them. IFMIF-EVEDA

IFMIF-LIPAc DIAGNOSTICS AND ITS CHALLENGES

The IFMIF/EVEDA Accelerator Prototype will be a 9MeV, 125mA CW deuteron accelerator to validate the technical options for the IFMIF accelerator design. The Radiofrequency Quadrupole (RFQ), buncher cavities and Superconducting Radiofrequency Linac (SRF Linac) require continuous wave RF power at 175 MHz with an accuracy of ±1% in amplitude and ±1o in phase. Also the IFMIF/EVEDA RF Power System has to work under pulsed mode operation (during the accelerator commissioning). The IFMIF/EVEDA RF Power System is composed of 18 RF power generators feeding the eight RFQ couplers (200kW), the two buncher cavities (105kW) and the eight superconducting half wave resonators of the SRF Linac (105kW). The main components of each RF power chain are the Low Level Radio Frequency system (LLRF), three amplification stages and a circulator with its load. For obvious standardization and scale economies reasons, the same topology has been chosen for the 18 RF power chains: all of them use the same main components which can be individually tuned to provide different RF output powers up to 200kW. The studies and the current design of the IFMIF/EVEDA RF Power System are presented in this contribution.

Ifmif-eveda rf power system

This paper provides an overview of the final design and fabrication status of the IFMIF cryomodule, including the design issues, and deals with the strategies implemented in order to mitigate the main technical and logistical risks identified. The seismic constraints as well as licensing requirements, transportation issue and assembly process are also addressed. The IFMIF cryomodule presented here will be part of the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) whose construction is ongoing [1, 2]. It is a full scale prototype of one of the IFMIF accelerators, from the injector to the first cryomodule, aiming at validating the technical options for the future accelerator-based D-Li neutron source to produce high intensity high energy neutron flux for testing of candidate materials for use in fusion energy reactors. The cryomodule contains all the equipment to transport and accelerate a 125 mA deuteron beam from an input energy of 5 MeV up to 9 MeV. It consists of a horizontal cryostat of about 6 m long, 3 m high and 2 m wide, which includes 8 superconducting HWRs for beam acceleration working at 175 MHz and at 4.5 K, 8 power couplers to provide RF power to cavities, and 8 Solenoid Packages as focusing elements. OVERVIEW OF THE IFMIF LIPAC PROJECT The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) aims at producing intense neutron fluxes so as to characterize materials envisioned for future fusion reactors. To this end, two identical Linacs, each accelerating a continuous-wave 125-mA deuteron beam at the final energy of 40 MeV, would be necessary to produce by break-up interactions of the D beam with the Li target the required 10 neutrons per seconds with the appropriate energy [3]. Because the accelerators have to reach unprecedented performances, the feasibility is being tested through the design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and testing activities of a 1:1-scale prototype accelerator from the injector to the first cryomodule referred to as the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator (LIPAc) shown in Figure 1. The IFMIF project is carried out under the framework of the Broader Approach Agreement between Europe and Japan. It is presently in its Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities (EVEDA), and the accomplishment in summer 2013, on schedule, of its Engineering Design Activities (EDA) allowed the successful development of the IFMIF Intermediate Engineering Design Report (IIEDR) [4]. The EU contributions to the LIPAc accelerator (CEASaclay, CIEMAT, INFN Legnaro and SCK-CEN Mol) are coordinated by the Fusion for Energy organization. The D injector and LEBT have been installed and are nowadays being tested on the Rokkasho site (JAEA) in Japan. Figure 1: IFMIF LIPAc accelerator.

Technical and Logistical Challenges for IFMIF-LIPAC Cryomodule Construction

For the purpose of material studies for future nuclear fusion reactors, the IFMIF deuteron beams present a simultaneous combination of unprecedentedly high intensity (2 × 125 mA CW), power (2 × 5 MW) and space charge. Special considerations and new concepts have been developed in order to overcome these challenges. The global strategy for beam dynamics design of the 40 MeV IFMIF accelerators is presented, stressing on the control of micro-losses, and the possibility of online fine tuning. Start-to-end simulations without and with errors are presented for the prototype accelerator. Considerations about conflicts between halo and emittance minimization are then discussed in this very high space charge context.

Dynamics of the IFMIF very high-intensity beam

The objectives of the IFMIF/EVEDA project are to produce the detailed design of the entire IFMIF facility, as well as to build and test a number of prototypes, including a high-intensity CW deuteron accelerator (125 mA @ 9 MeV). Most of the accelerator components (Injector, RFQ, Superconducting RF-Linac, Transport Line and Beam Dump, RF Systems, Local control systems, beam instrumentation) are designed and provided by European institutions (CEA/Saclay, CIEMAT, INFN, SCK-CEN) while the RFQ couplers, the supervision of the control system and the building including utilities constructed at Rokkasho BA site are provided by JAEA. The coordination between Europe and Japan is ensured by an international project team, located in Rokkasho, where the accelerator prototype will be installed and commissioned. The design and R&D activities are presented, as well as the schedule of the prototype accelerator.

This paper gives an overview of the French con-tributions to the BA projects and reports on the presentstatus of these projects since 2007.
