The present paper deals with the procedure for modification of 80/100-paving grade asphalt cement using reclaimed polyethylene (PE) derived from low-density polyethylene carry bags collected from domestic waste. The details of the preparation of the PE-modified binder and the results on variation of binder properties with blending temperature and blending time are presented. Results of various tests carried out on the different PE blends indicated enhanced binder properties like improved storage stability, resistance to aging, degradation, and temperature susceptibility. It is observed that viscosity at a given temperature increases with the addition of PE in the binder. Dynamic shear rheometer test results revealed that PE-modified binders (when subjected to the same stress) experienced lower strains than the neat asphalt; in addition, tanδ values of PE-modified binders considerably decreased as the PE content was increased. It was found that 5% PE content in modified asphalt by weight is adequate in terms of enhanced binder properties studied.

This paper presents the results of investigations on the rheological properties of modified asphalt binders and their influence on the performance of asphalt mixes. Asphalt mixes with modified binders such as styrene butadiene styrene polymer, crumb rubber, natural rubber, and waste plastics were evaluated for their rheological properties and compared to the properties of asphalt mixes with unmodified VG30 (viscosity grade) asphalt binder. The dynamic modulus values and rutting characteristics of the asphalt mixes were studied with due consideration to different levels of aging and temperature variations. Studies on the rheological properties showed that the energy dissipated by unmodified asphalt (VG30) binder is higher than that of modified asphalt binders. Long-term aged natural rubber and waste plastic modified asphalt binders showed significant increase in the properties compared to unmodified asphalt binder (VG30). Reduced temperature susceptibility of polymer modified asphalt binder showed that only polymer modification can enhance both high temperature rutting resistance and low temperature thermal cracking resistance of asphalt mixes. The transient nature of polymer modified asphalt mix from viscoelastic solid-like to viscoelastic fluid-like condition is significantly shifted to higher temperature compared to that of the mix with unmodified asphalt binder. Aging and rutting indices showed that rubber modified asphalt mixes are highly susceptible to aging. Statistical analysis of test results showed that the process of modification of asphalt binder, aging, and temperature during the test influence the rheological and rutting characteristics of asphalt mixes significantly. Correlation between the asphalt binder properties and its influence on the rutting resistance are found to be statistically significant. The analysis using least significant difference showed that polymer modified asphalt binder significantly improves the aging and rutting resistance of asphalt mixes compared to unmodified asphalt binder.

Rheological and Rutting Characterization of Asphalt Mixes with Modified Binders

Every year several million tons of low-density polyethylene (PE) carry bags are produced as waste in India. PE is not readily biodegradable and will persist in the environment in a more or less unchanged state for a considerable period of time. Also environmental problems are created due to dumping and also due to limited alternatives for recycling. Utilization of reclaimed PE is of great significance to developed/developing countries particularly for reduction in environmental pollution created due to dumping of PE bags. Since highways require huge amounts of construction materials, incorporation of only a small portion of recycled material will dispose of large quantity of PE bags. In the year 2002, conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA) (control) and PE-modified HMA (PEHMA) test sections were constructed along Outer Ring Road connecting National Highway-4 and Bangalore City. The performances of the control HMA and the PEHMA mixtures were evaluated periodically over a period of 5 years. The control HMA and PEHMA were subjected to a laboratory testing program that included tests to evaluate creep, indirect tensile strength, tensile strength ratio, resilient modulus (MR), gyratory properties, voids in total mixture, and bulk densities. Test results indicated that the PEHMA mixtures had lower moisture susceptibility, higher tensile strength, and resilient modulus. The gyratory properties and creep tests indicate that the PEHMA mixtures are more resistant to rutting. In-place performance was evaluated by pavement deflection and unevenness measurement for 5 years of the pavement’s life. Field performance results indicated that wheel path cracking was observed on the control section and no cracks were observed on the PEHMA test section.
