The effects of increasing rates of N (as urea) and K on vegetative growth, nutrient uptake, fruit yield and quality of strawberries (Fragaria × anassa Duch.) was investigated in a field trial. In the first and second seasons there were small increases in plant growth and yields with the low rate of N but higher rates caused marked reductions in both growth and yields. With the high N rates accumulation of high levels of ammonium and soluble salts in the soil during spring of the first season was thought to have initially inhibited plant growth. Following nitrification of the accumulated ammonium, soil acidification occurred and consequently toxicities of Al and Mn limited strawberry growth at high N rates. The effect of nitrate and plant size on nitrate uptake and in vitro nitrate reductase activity in strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa cv. Selva)

The performance of four California and 11 eastern cultivars of Fragaria × ananassa Duchesne in Lamarck, and 12 elite F 1 hybrids of Fragaria × ananassa with F. virginiana Miller in their immediate background was evaluated in a producer's field with and without methyl bromide-chloropicrin fumigation. Averaged across all genotypes, plants in nonfumigated soils had 43% fewer runners, 18% smaller fruit, and 46% lower yields than did plants on fumigated soil. They also had an average of 27% fewer crowns, 49% more root discoloration, significantly fewer fine roots, and showed symptoms of the black root rot syndrome. The most commonly isolated pathogens from discolored roots were Pythium sp., Rhizoctonia sp., Idriella lunata P.E. Nelson & K. Wilh., and the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne hapla Chitwood). The performance of all genotypes was enhanced by fumigation, although the F. virginiana hybrids performed comparatively better than the other cultivars on nonfumigated soils.

Relative Performance of Strawberry Cultivars and Native Hybrids on Fumigated and Nonfumigated Soil in Michigan

Two greenhouse experiments were conducted with strawberries (Fragaria ananassa) grown in plastic pots filled with 12 kg of soil, and irrigated by drip to evaluate the effect of 3 N levels and 3 N sources. The N levels were 3.6, 7.2 or 10.8 mmol Nl−1 and the N sources were urea, ammonium nitrate and potassium nitrate for supplying NH4/NO3 in mmol Nl−1 ratios of 7/0, 3.5/3.5 or 0/7, respectively. Both experiments were uniformly supplied with micronutrients and 1.7 and 5.0 mmoll−1 of P and K, respectively. The fertilizers were supplied through the irrigation stream with every irrigation. The highest yield was obtained with the 7.2 mmol Nl−1 due to increase in both weight and number of fruits per plant. With this N concentration soil ECe and NO3-N concentration were kept at low levels. Total N and NO3-N in laminae and petioles increased with increasing N level. With the N sources the highest yield was obtained with urea due to better fruit setting. The N source had no effect on soil salinity and residual soil NO3-N; residual NH4-N in the soils receiving urea and ammonium nitrate were at low levels.

Nitrogen fertigation of greenhouse-grown strawberries

Strawberry (Fragaria ananassa cv. Aliso) plants were grown under three N‐rates in the nursery: 80, 320 and 640 kg N/ha, and then transplanted to the fruiting field. Plants from each nursery treatment were given 150, 300 and 450 kg N/ha. The fertilizer was given as ammonium sulfate in the nursery and as ammonium nitrate in the field, a part broadcasted before planting and the other part applied as top dressings. Biomass production, plantlets size distribution and N content were restricted by the lowest level of N given in the nursery. Plants grown at 320 kg N/ha in the nursery gave significantly earlier and higher total yields than those grown at the other rates. Fruit yields were not significantly influenced by the N‐application in the field.
