To determine the maternal and reproductive performance of F1 cows in the subtropics, 42 Brahman x Angus, 34 Senepol x Angus, and 50 Tuli x Angus cows were bred to Angus bulls to calve first and subsequently bred to Charolais bulls to calve as 3- to 8-yr-olds. Age at first calving did not differ among crossbred cows. Angus-sired calf birth weights were heavier (P < 0.01) from Senepol x Angus than either Brahman x Angus or Tuli x Angus cows. Weaning weights of Angus-sired calves were heavier (P < 0.01) from Brahman x Angus (213.5 kg) than either Senepol x Angus (194.9 kg) or Tuli x Angus (191.5 kg) cows. As 3- to 8-yr-old cows, calf birth weights were heavier (P < 0.05) from Senepol x Angus compared with Brahman x Angus but not Tuli x Angus cows. Weaning weights of Charolais-sired calves were heaviest (P < 0.05) from Brahman x Angus cows (268.9 kg), lightest from Tuli x Angus cows (233.4 kg), and intermediate from Senepol x Angus cows (245.0 kg). Calf crop born and calf crop weaned were lowest (P < 0.05) for Senepol x Angus cows (76.9 and 70.2%) and did not differ between Brahman x Angus (89.0 and 86.1%) and Tuli x Angus (94.7 and 86.5%) cows. Tuli x Angus cows tended (P < 0.10) to have a lower percentage of unassisted births and lower (P < 0.10) calf survival to weaning than Brahman x Angus cows but not Senepol x Angus cows. As 3- to 8-yr-olds, weaning weight per cow exposed was greatest (P < 0.05) for Brahman x Angus (234.2 kg), least (P < 0.05) for Senepol x Angus (173.0 kg), and intermediate (P < 0.05) for Tuli x Angus (209.1 kg) cows. Also as 3- to 8-yr-olds, efficiency (205-d calf weight per 100 kg of cow exposed) was similar for Brahman x Angus (42.2) and Tuli x Angus cows (40.7), and both were greater (P < 0.01) than for Senepol x Angus cows (33.8). These data indicate that, in the subtropics, maternal and reproductive performance of Tuli x Angus cows, but not Senepol x Angus cows, was comparable to Brahman x Angus cows, except for lower calf survivability and weaning weight.

Genetic and non-genetic factors were estimated for birth weight in the Tuli cattle breed of Zimbabwe. Performance records ( n = 1154) were obtained from the Livestock Identification Trust (LIT) for the period (2008–2014) for three farms; X ( n = 494), Z ( n = 143) and Y ( n = 517). We used the Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) for fitting the Sire model. The model used the farm, season, sex, year and dam age as fixed effects while the sire was fitted as a random variable. Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) was used to predict breeding values (BVs). The mean birth weight was (30.89±0.128). Wet season had higher birth (31.62±0.27) weight than dry season (30.62±0.144); however, the difference was not statistically significant. The other factors, farm, sex, year and dam age had a significant effect (P <0.05) on birth weight. Heritability and repeatability estimates were 0.44 and 0.35, respectively. Based on the results, the high heritability estimate for birth weight suggests that the trait responds well to selection. Sire breeding values ranged from -4.400 to 6.845 with the majority of sires between -2 and 2, showing that there was stabilising selection over the years to minimise both overweights and underweights.

Genetic and non-genetic factors influencing birth weight in the Tuli cattle breed of Zimbabwe

Records collected in a crossbreeding experiment involving Boran and nine groups of Boran x Bos taurus crossbred cattle in two ranches in central Tanzania were analysed. The traits studied were length of gestation (available on the crosses only) and live weight at various stages ji-om birth to three years of age. The records were analysed by means of Statistical Analysis System (SAS) for general linear models. Length of gestation varied significantly al/long groups of crosses (i.e. by breed of sire). The overall mean gestation length was 282.8 days. Most crossbred groups were heavier than pure Boran both atbirth and at subsequent ages. At three years of age the crosses, pooled over sire breeds, exceeded the Boran by about 10 percent. South Devon crosses were the heaviest at this age, followed by Charolais, Chianina, Brown Swiss, and SimTilental crosses. These crosses were 12 to 15 percent heavier than the pure Boran. Males (steers) were about 5 percent heavier than females. The findings are generally in line with results obtained in crossbreeding experiments elsewhere and suggest that bulls of the fast growing, late maturing continelltal breeds could be useful as terminal sires also under Tanzanian conditions. If bulls of a dual-purpose breed, e.g. Simmental, were used, female progeny might be sold for dairy purposes. However, no firm conclusions can be drawn until data on the effect of crossbreeding on other traits, like reproductive performance and viability, have been collected and analysed. Comparison of F1 cows sired by Brahman, Boran and Tuli bulls for reproductive, maternal, and cow longevity traits

Summary The objective of this study was to determine the growth patterns and performance ofFI Brahman (Bos indicus)-, Senepol (Bos taurus)-, and Tuli (Sanga)-Angus calves under semiarid south Texas conditions. Four hundred eighty-nine preweaning records collected over 4 yr were analyzed. The statistical model for performance traits included the effects of breed of sire, year, sex, age of dam, and breed of sire x year. Year effects were important (P 0.05) in BCS and frame size at weaning. Males were 3.3 kg heavier (P = 0.12) at birth than females, especially for the Fl Brahman males that were 4.5 kg heavier (P 0.05) in these respects, but appeared to be more competitive in relative preweaning growth rate to the Brahman Fl calves in years of greater nutritional stress. Because the Brahman Fl females had heavier (P < 0.05) weights throughout the experiment, but were later maturing, they had lower reproductive rates than the other two Fl breed types. Senepol and Tuli Fl 's were earlier maturing, but the Senepol Fl 's had difficulty calving as two year olds, reducing their percent calf crop weaned. As a result, the Tuli Fl's weaned more calf per female exposed, and more calfper 100 kg female exposed than the other Fl breed types. Senepol and Brahman Fl 's were similar in efficiency of production for their first calving opportunity. However, Senepol Fl females weaned less calfper 100 kg female maintained for both the second and third calving opportunities. The Tuli Fl females had the highest efficiency for their 1st and 2nd calving opportunities but were similar to Brahman Fl females by their 3rd calf. Brahman F 1 females had the highest weight of calf per loo kg cow maintained for their third calf.
