Algorithms are presented for the digital control of double-loop DC machine drives used for applications where severe constraints on motor speed and position render conventional constant-torque or power control inadequate, such as in steel rolling mill drives. It is shown that the heavy current demand associated with maximal acceleration control can be reduced by using a form of proportional control where, in addition to the conventional inner-loop current feedback, a distance feedback term sets the high limiting value of the speed feedback signal, thus reducing the motor armature current. >

The operational stability areas of proportional-integral (PI) controllers implemented in analogue, analogue with discrete sampling, and digital form have been theoretically investigated. Whereas in the continuous-data control system, stability may be-maintained by compensating any increase of proportional gain K p with integral gain, K i , the discretized system tends to become unstable if either K p or K i is increased. A new stability area is shown to exist for a discrete-sampled system with puire integral control and large gain (which is unstable when implemented in analogue form). This result is confirmed experimentally.

Stability Analysis of Thyristor Current Controllers

A digital interface for a three-phase PWM ac-dc GTO converter is described, and a microprocessor-based firing scheme for the PWM control system is proposed. Two modulation strategies, equal pulsewidth modulation (EPWM) and sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM), are implemented and their efficiencies of operation considered. Applied as the inner current loop in a dc motor controller with constant-gain proportional-plus-integral (PI) control, a fast response to step reference input changes is obtained. The theoretical responses using an approximate z-transform analysis are used to obtain optimum operational parameters.

Current Source Optimization in AC-DC GTO Thyristor Converters

The performance analysis of a novel fast-response micro-processor-based firing and control scheme for a phase-controlled rectifier is presented. Controller performance and stability analysis are emphasized, particularly when the converter operates in a closed loop fed by a weak ac system. The firing angle control scheme, which relies on real-time projection of the firing delay angle, has been implemented and tested. In this implementation the controller responds within 20? s its to a change in the desired output voltage. The controller is synchronized to the line through a software phase-locked loop (PLL), which adapts to large variations in the line frequency. With this controller the bridge rectifier can operate properly, with a constant steady-state open-loop gain, even when a weak ac system with unregulated frequency feeds the converter. The operation and performance of the microprocessor-based converter with a current feedback loop are described. Two simple stability analyses, one based on system function simplification and the other based on exact system representation, are discussed and experimentally verified. The generation of subharmonics caused by the line inductance and the reference zero-crossing detection circuit is also studied. Experimental results are reported.

Performance Analysis of a Novel Microprocessor-Based Controller for a Phase-Controlled Rectifier Connected to a Weak AC System

This paper describes the circuits and algorithms used in a microprocessor-controlled AC/DC thyristor convertor to implement a wide-bandwidth closed-loop current source. The convertor consists of two three-phase bridge circuits for four-quadrant operation, with direct digital control using a M6809 microprocessor. The timing pulse generator is linked to the supply frequency via a phase locked loop, making the system insensitive to supply frequency variation. The use of proportional-plus-integral (PI) control algorithms leads to fast responses to step changes in reference input. Results from constant-gain PI controllers are compared in the paper with theoretical responses based on approximate z-transform analysis to obtain optimum parameters for various modes of operation. In addition, results are presented from a simple variable-gain adaptive controller which adjusts the controller parameters depending on the reference change and operating point.
