Resolving surface chemical states in XPS analysis of first row transition metals, oxides and hydroxides: Sc, Ti, V, Cu and Zn

The immediate bonding effectiveness of contemporary adhesives is quite favorable, regardless of the approach used. In the long term, the bonding effectiveness of some adhesives drops dramatically, whereas the bond strengths of other adhesives are more stable. This review examines the fundamental processes that cause the adhesion of biomaterials to enamel and dentin to degrade with time. Non-carious class V clinical trials remain the ultimate test method for the assessment of bonding effectiveness, but in addition to being high-cost, they are time- and labor-consuming, and they provide little information on the true cause of clinical failure. Therefore, several laboratory protocols were developed to predict bond durability. This paper critically appraises methodologies that focus on chemical degradation patterns of hydrolysis and elution of interface components, as well as mechanically oriented test set-ups, such as fatigue and fracture toughness measurements. A correlation of in vitro and in vivo data revealed that, currently, the most validated method to assess adhesion durability involves aging of micro-specimens of biomaterials bonded to either enamel or dentin. After about 3 months, all classes of adhesives exhibited mechanical and morphological evidence of degradation that resembles in vivo aging effects. A comparison of contemporary adhesives revealed that the three-step etch-and-rinse adhesives remain the 'gold standard' in terms of durability. Any kind of simplification in the clinical application procedure results in loss of bonding effectiveness. Only the two-step self-etch adhesives approach the gold standard and do have some additional clinical benefits.

New interpretations of XPS spectra of nickel metal and oxides

Quantitative chemical state X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis of mixed nickel metal, oxide, hydroxide and oxyhydroxide systems is challenging due to the complexity of the Ni 2p peak shapes resulting from multiplet splitting, shake-up and plasmon loss structures. Quantification of mixed nickel chemical states and the qualitative determination of low concentrations of Ni(III) species are demonstrated via an approach based on standard spectra from quality reference samples (Ni, NiO, Ni(OH)2, NiOOH), subtraction of these spectra, and data analysis that integrates information from the Ni 2p spectrum and the O 1s spectra. Quantification of a commercial nickel powder and a thin nickel oxide film grown at 1-Torr O2 and 300 °C for 20 min is demonstrated. The effect of uncertain relative sensitivity factors (e.g. Ni 2.67 ± 0.54) is discussed, as is the depth of measurement for thin film analysis based on calculated inelastic mean free paths. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic chemical state quantification of mixed nickel metal, oxide and hydroxide systems

Water oxidation is a critical step in water splitting to make hydrogen fuel. We report the solution synthesis, structural/compositional characterization, and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalytic properties of ∼2–3 nm thick films of NiOx, CoOx, NiyCo1–yOx, Ni0.9Fe0.1Ox, IrOx, MnOx, and FeOx. The thin-film geometry enables the use of quartz crystal microgravimetry, voltammetry, and steady-state Tafel measurements to study the electrocatalytic activity and electrochemical properties of the oxides. Ni0.9Fe0.1Ox was found to be the most active water oxidation catalyst in basic media, passing 10 mA cm–2 at an overpotential of 336 mV with a Tafel slope of 30 mV dec–1 with oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity roughly an order of magnitude higher than IrOx control films and similar to the best known OER catalysts in basic media. Solution-cast metal oxide thin film electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution.

Photoelectron spectra of a number of chromium oxides and other compounds were studied under high spectral resolution conditions chosen to reduce the possibility of differential charging. Some of the suite of Cr(III) compounds chosen for study produced Cr 2p spectra containing fine structure that could be identified with multiplet splitting. The splitting patterns produced were similar for all trivalent binary and ternary oxides and sulphides whose patterns closely reproduced the splitting predicted for the Cr(III) free ion by Gupta and Sen. The fine structure observed for compounds such as chromium (III) chloride had a distinctly different pattern. A number of other chromium (III) compounds were studied that did not exhibit the fine structure described above; nonetheless, well-defined line shapes and reproducible peak centroids were obtained by fitting protocols. The use of such information to determine surface chemistry on chromated steels is described, based on the spectral knowledge of chromium (III) oxides and hydroxides and the chromium (VI) oxide systems.

X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies of chromium compounds

Surface oxidation reactions of cobalt, molybdenum and mixed cobalt–molybdenum metals have been investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The oxide stoichiometries have been determined from XPS intensity measurements. Such quantification has been important in identifying oxide compositions with characteristic XPS spectra. A number of discrete binary molybdenum oxides have been characterized after reactions at 200°C and pressures ranging from 1 atm to 10−6 Pa. At the lowest pressure, the Mo 3d spectra and O/Mo ratios suggest the formation of a molybdenum–oxygen structure with a stoichiometry near unity. By contrast, at higher pressures, oxides that are predominantly MoO2 and MoO3 appear, but other intermediate oxide structures are also identified. Well-defined binary oxides of cobalt can be prepared from cobalt metal after heating in oxygen at different pressures. New binary oxides of cobalt and molybdenum have been generated by the reaction on MoO3 or Co3O4 substrates. Oxidation of a thin film of molybdenum on a Co3O4 substrate has been shown to produce a nearly stoichiometric surface layer of CoMoO4. The procedure could be useful for the production of other ternary oxides of possible interest for use as XPS reference materials.

X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies of thin film oxides of cobalt and molybdenum

This study investigated the bonding mechanisms of glass-ionomer cement to dentin. The approaches included mechanical determination of bond strengths, analysis of surface morphology by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal microscopy, and measurement of chemical changes of fracture bond sites by means of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The highest bond strengths were obtained with light-cured glass-ionomer cement. SEM and confocal images showed evidence of mechanical interlocking of cement in dentinal tubules. SIMS depth profiles confirmed the ion-exchange process between the light-cured glass-ionomer cement and the dentin surface. From corresponding XPS results, it was clear that the adhesion characteristics were significantly affected by light-curing and the chemical structure of the polymer.
