The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at the GANIL facility, Caen-France. This set-up exploits the stable and radioactive heavy-ions beams delivered by the cyclotron accelerator complex of GANIL. Additionally, it benefits from a large palette of ancillary detectors and spectrometers to address in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The set-up has been designed to couple AGATA with a magnetic spectrometer, charged-particle and neutron detectors, scintillators for the detection of high-energy γ rays and other devices such as a plunger to measure nuclear lifetimes. In this paper, the design and the mechanical characteristics of the set-up are described. Based on simulations, expected performances of the AGATA 1π array are presented.

Conceptual design of the AGATA 1π array at GANIL

$\ensuremath{\gamma}$ Rays in the $\ensuremath{\pi}{\ensuremath{\nu}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ nucleus ${}^{208}\mathrm{Bi}$ have been studied at the Gammasphere using deep-inelastic reactions induced by a $305\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{MeV}{ }^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ beam on a thick ${}^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ target. Previously unknown yrast $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray cascades above the ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ millisecond isomer in ${}^{208}\mathrm{Bi}$ were identified in cross coincidence with known $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays from complementary potassium products. Yrast and near-yrast levels up to 5.6 MeV in ${}^{208}\mathrm{Bi}$ have been located, and they are interpreted in light of earlier charged particle spectroscopy results, and with the help of shell model calculations.

γ-ray spectroscopy of proton neutron-hole nucleus 208 Bi from deep inelastic heavy ion reactions

This paper reports on recent work using multi-nucleon transfer reactions to populate metastable states in neutron-rich, rare-earth and transitional nuclei with A~180-200. The use of a position sensitive gas-filled detector, CHICO, allowed the directions of the binary fragments to be measured, thereby enabling event-by-event Doppler corrections to be made for the prompt, in-beam transitions depopulating the nuclei of interest. By using the temporal calibration provided by (i) the measurement of the binary reaction fragments and (ii) the natural pulsing of the cyclotron beam, transitions from metastable states with lifetimes in the nano-to-microsecond regime could be identified. The complementarity of this technique with the novel use of relativistic projectile fragmentation reactions is outlined, together with potential future avenues for this research, with a particular emphasis on the population of exotic isomeric states at high angular momentum and excitation energy values.

Production of exotic nuclear isomers in multi-nucleon transfer reactions

Nous avons etudie la structure des noyaux autour de 68Ni, ainsi que la production, separation et identification des isotopes se trouvant dans le voisinage du noyau doublement magique 100Sn. Dans la premiere partie, est discutee l'evolution de la collectivite et l'interaction entre degres de liberte particule independante et collectifs autour de 68Ni. Nous avons mesure des temps de vie dans les noyaux de Zn autour de N=40, produits par reactions profondement inelastiques 238U+70Zn a GANIL, a l'aide d'un "plunger". Les noyaux d'inteeret, etaient identifies par le spectrometre VAMOS, les gamma par le detecteur EXOGAM. Des durees de vie, nous avons extrait les probabilites de transition reduites. De nouvelles transitions ainsi que des durees de vie sont mesurees pour la premiere fois. Les resultats sont discutes dans le cadre de calculs modele en couches. Dans la deuxieme partie, la conservation partielle de seniorite dans la couche g9/2 et son influence sur le transfert d'une particule est discute. La troisieme partie presente un test realise a RIKEN (Japon), visant a evaluer deux configurations du separateur BigRIPS, afin d'optimiser la production et la selection des noyaux de 100Sn. Cette etude a ete utilisee par la suite pour notre experience, consacree a la mesure de la force Gamow-Teller dans la desintegration de 100Sn. Les noyaux autour de 100Sn ont ete produits par fragmentation d'un faisceau de 124Xe a 345 MeV/u. La section efficace de production des noyaux autour de 100Sn a ete mesuree. La recherche de nouveaux isotopes et de nouveaux isomeres est presentee.

The emission spectra of Ne6+ and Ne7+ ions generated by beam-foil excitation in the range 18-48 nm show a number of lines arising from doubly excited levels. Hartree-Fock calculations using superpositions of quasi-degenerate configurations provided many of the identifications, as did interpolations along the lithium-like and beryllium-like isoelectronic sequences. From these observations, energies of Ne VII 1s2s2pnl and 1s2p2n'l' configurations are derived for the n = 3 and 4 levels. This has led to a revision of several Ne VII levels previously reported in the literature. In addition, seven new 3d-4f transitions were found between doubly excited states in lithium-like Ne VIII**.

Spectroscopic study of doubly excited levels in Ne VII** and Ne VIII**

The use of deep-inelastic heavy-ion reactions for the spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei is discussed. Conclusions from the N/Z equilibration process studies are outlined and examples of spectroscopic results obtained for the neutron-rich spdf shell nuclei, N = 82 isotones and nuclei from the 208Pb region are reviewed.
