Up to now, multi channel imaging systems have been increasingly studied and approached from various directions
in the academic domain due to their promising large field of view at small system thickness However, specific
drawbacks of each of the solutions prevented the diffusion into corresponding markets so far Most severe problems
are a low image resolution and a low sensitivity compared to a conventional single aperture lens besides the lack
of a cost-efficient method of fabrication and assembly We propose a microoptical approach to ultra-compact
optics for real-time vision systems that are inspired by the compound eyes of insects The demonstrated modules
achieve a VGA resolution with 700x550 pixels within an optical package of 68mm x 52mm and a total track
length of 14mm The partial images that are separately recorded within different optical channels are stitched
together to form a final image of the whole field of view by means of image processing These software tools allow
to correct the distortion of the individual partial images so that the final image is also free of distortion The
so-called electronic cluster eyes are realized by state-of-the-art microoptical fabrication techniques and offer a
resolution and sensitivity potential that makes them suitable for consumer, machine vision and medical imaging
applications

Driving micro-optical imaging systems towards miniature camera applications

In this paper we report a multifunctional nanostructured surface on glass that, for the first time, combines a wide range of optical, wetting and durability properties, including low omnidirectional reflectivity, low haze, high transmission, superhydrophobicity, oleophobicity, and high mechanical resistance. Nanostructures have been fabricated on a glass surface by reactive ion etching through a nanomask, which is formed by dewetting ultrathin metal films (< 10 nm thickness) subjected to rapid thermal annealing (RTA). The nanostructures strongly reduce the initial surface reflectivity (∼4%), to less than 0.4% in the 390–800 nm wavelength range while keeping the haze at low values (< 0.9%). The corresponding water contact angle (θ
 c) is ∼24.5°, while that on a flat surface is ∼43.5°. The hydrophilic wetting nanostructure can be changed into a superhydrophobic and oleophobic surface by applying a fluorosilane coating, which achieves contact angles for water and oil of ∼156.3° and ∼116.2°, respectively. The multicomponent composition of the substrate (Corning® glass) enables ion exchange through the surface, so that the nanopillars’ mechanical robustness increases, as is demonstrated by the negligible changes in surface morphology and optical performance after 5,000-run wipe test. The geometry of the nanoparticles forming the nanomask depends on the metal material, initial metal thickness and RTA parameters. In particular we show that by simply changing the initial thickness of continuous Cu films we can tailor the metal nanoparticles’ surface density and size. The developed surface nanostructuring does not require expensive lithography, thus it can be controlled and implemented on an industrial scale, which is crucial for applications.

Durable, superhydrophobic, antireflection, and low haze glass surfaces using scalable metal dewetting nanostructuring

The potential and limits of micromoulding technology for the wafer scale hybrid integration of micro-optic elements on top of arbitrary substrates like glass, Silicon, III/V-semiconductors by a process which is performed in a modified contact mask aligner. The elements are characterised by high precision and stability, temperature stable and precise pitch, index, homogeneity, uniformity across the wafer, and they fulfill additional requirements for a practical application (AR-coating, separation in a dicing saw). Additionally, the technology for a two- sided replication of elements has been developed. The precision of lens arrays fabricated by reflow and UV-moulding is investigated, and the high performance of these arrays in the collimation of fiber arrays is shown. Steps toward a wafer scale integration of lens arrays with vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) by locally selective replication are demonstrated.

Polymer UV-molding for micro-optical systems and O/E-integration

We present a diffractive optical element consisting of computer-generated holograms and dielectric multilayer mirrors in a stratified setup. Illuminated with a white laser beam, consisting of three single lasers with wavelengths of 635 nm, 543 nm, and 473 nm, this element enables the far field projection of arbitrary, multicolor images. Certain advantages of holographic image generation, e.g., the possibility of a large depth of focus and a very easy optical setup, are maintained with the new element.

We present a specially designed hybrid optics comprising refraction and diffraction effects for tight spatial and temporal focusing of ultrashort laser pulses. Both aims can be put into practice by having a high numerical aperture (NA=0.45) and low internal dispersion at the same time. We are presenting what we believe is the first experimental realization of such a hybrid short plus focusing optics. The focusing properties are compared with a commonly used microscope objective (20×,NA=0.45) in theory and experimentally.
