A review of human thermal comfort in the built environment

Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) and its effect on occupant well-being and comfort is an important area of study. This paper presents a state of the art study through extensive review of the literature, by establishing links between IEQs and occupant well-being and comfort. A range of issues such as sick building syndrome, indoor air quality thermal comfort, visual comfort and acoustic comfort are considered in this paper. The complexity of the relationship between occupant comfort and well-being parameters with IEQ are further exacerbated due to relationships that these parameters have with each other as well. Based on the review of literature in these areas it is established that design of buildings needs to consider occupant well-being parameters right at the beginning. Some good practices in all these different areas have also been highlighted and documented in this paper. The knowledge established as part of this paper would be helpful for researchers, designer, engineers and facilities maintenance engineers. This paper will also be of great benefit to researchers who endeavour to undertake research in this area and could act as a good starting point for them.

Impact of indoor environmental quality on occupant well-being and comfort: A review of the literature

This paper presents a literature review of thermal comfort. Both rational and adaptive thermal comfort approaches are presented. An overview of the human body thermoregulatory system as well as the mathematical modelling of heat exchanged between human body and its environment in the situations of both awaked and sleeping people is presented.

Thermal comfort: A review paper

In modern societies people spend over 90% of their time indoors. Students spending more time at school than any other building except at home highlights the importance of providing comfortable indoor thermal conditions in these buildings. Thermal comfort since has been related to productivity and well-being and energy conservation in schools, has gained importance in recent years. This paper presents an overview of thermal comfort field surveys in educational buildings over the last five decades. The studies are reviewed in two sections; the first covering the field study methodologies including the objective and subjective surveys, and the second reviewing study results based on the climate zone, educational stage, and the applied thermal comfort approach. Confounding parameters have been discussed to outline priorities for the future research agenda in this field. Reviewed studies have assessed the thermal environment in classrooms compared to common thermal comfort standards. Most of the studies concluded that students׳ thermal preferences were not in the comfort range provided in the standards. Ventilation as an essential determinant of indoor air quality and thermal comfort has been highlighted in most studies. The wide disparity in thermal neutralities underlines the need for micro-level thermal comfort studies.

SUMMARY This work is focused on the evaluation of indoor thermal quality and shows some results of a wider field study in university classrooms. The field study was conducted through physical observations and questionnaires, performed at the same time during the regular lesson time, in a period just before the start of the heating season. The predictions of dissatisfied occupants, based both on Fanger’s heat balance model and on an adaptive approach, were compared to each other. The subjective survey investigated the thermal acceptability, the thermal preference and the thermal sensation, asking students to assess their comfort on subjective scales. The calculated predicted votes were compared to the observed subjective responses. Moreover, the subjective mean votes were compared to the thermal environment perceptions in terms of acceptability and preference. The obtained results give a contribution to t he enrichment of knowledge about thermal subjective responses in classrooms.
