Towards edge computing in intelligent manufacturing: Past, present and future

Nowadays, IoT technology is used in various application domains, including the healthcare, where sensors and IoT enabled medical devices exchange data without human interaction to securely transmit collected sensitive healthcare data towards healthcare professionals to be reviewed and take proper actions if needed. The IoT devices are usually resource-constrained in terms of energy consumption, storage capacity, computational capability, and communication range. In healthcare applications, many miniaturized devices are exploited for healthcare data collection and transmission. Thus, there is a need for secure data aggregation while preserving the data integrity and privacy of the patient. For that, the security, privacy, and aggregation of health data are very important aspects to be considered. This paper proposes a novel secure data aggregation scheme called “An Efficient and Privacy-Preserving Data Aggregation Scheme with authentication for IoT-Based Healthcare applications” (EPPDA). EPPDA is based to verification and authorization phase to verify the legitimacy of the nodes that need to join the process of aggregation. EPPDA, also, uses additive homomorphic encryption to protect data privacy and combines it with homomorphic MAC to check the data integrity. The major advantage of homomorphic encryption is allowing complex mathematical operations to be performed on encrypted data without knowing the contents of the original plain data. The proposed system is developed using MySignals HW V2 platform. Security analysis and experimental results show that our proposed scheme guarantees data privacy, messages authenticity, and integrity, with lightweight communication overhead and computation.

EPPDA: An Efficient and Privacy-Preserving Data Aggregation Scheme with Authentication and Authorization for IoT-Based Healthcare Applications

As a new computing paradigm, edge computing has appeared in the public field of vision recently. Owing to its advantages of low delay and fast response, edge computing has become an important assistant of cloud computing and has brought new opportunities for diverse smart applications like the smart grid, the smart home, and the smart transportation. However, the accompanying security issues, which have always been the focus of users’ concern, still cannot be ignored. Therefore, we focus on the security issues in this overview. We first introduce some related definitions of edge computing and present the architecture for edge computing-based smart applications. After illustrating the smart applications, from the perspective of identity authentication and data security, we analyze the security protection requirements of these smart applications in the edge computing environment. Next, we review some state-of-the-art works on them. Furthermore, we present the extended discussions on the applicability of these current works in the edge computing environment. Finally, we briefly discuss the future work on authentication and data security of edge computing-based smart applications.

Smart Applications in Edge Computing: Overview on Authentication and Data Security

An edge-cloud Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) can help meet the computing requirements of industrial applications, particularly in time and latency-sensitive services. Ensuring the security and privacy of (sensitive) information collected by IIoT end devices is crucial, and has an important impact on the decision making as well as operational safety. However, these devices are energy constrained and vulnerable to corruption. The authentication schemes suitable for this environment need to be lightweight, efficient, and concise. In this article, we propose a symmetric-key authentication scheme with a perfect forward secrecy (SAPFS), which relies on both authentication and derivation master keys. The SAPFS scheme uses only XOR operation and hash function to achieve mutual authentication, key exchange, and message integrity. On the condition of the irreversible hash function and indistinguishable master keys, we demonstrate that SAPFS is provably secure under the random oracle model. Finally, a comparative summary with three other competing schemes (in terms of communication cost, storage requirement, and computation complexity) demonstrates its utility. 

SAPFS: An Efficient Symmetric-Key Authentication Key Agreement Scheme With Perfect Forward Secrecy for Industrial Internet of Things

Mobile edge computing (MEC) provides computing and data storage capabilities within the range of the wireless access network close to the users, which is driving the need for new type of security technologies. Faced with rapid traffic growth and increasing user experience requirements, the existing security schemes can no longer meet the new requirements of real time and lightweight. New solutions that do not require complex calculations, such as identity-based cryptography, attract great attention from researchers. To meet these demands, we design a new authentication architecture for MEC environment, which provides secure and efficient communication. Based on this authentication architecture, an anonymous identity-based scheme is proposed for lightweight devices. In the meantime, user anonymity is also fully protected. The proposed scheme is proved to be secure under a specific security model. In addition, we describe the security properties our scheme meets. The comparisons of time consumption and communicational cost are given at the end of the article, to demonstrate that our scheme performs prior to several previous schemes.

A Secure Anonymous Identity-Based Scheme in New Authentication Architecture for Mobile Edge Computing

With the rapid development of mobile communication technologies and network applications, communication models for mobile client and server interaction are becoming increasingly popular. The certificateless public key cryptography is suitable for designing security protocols which are used for mobile devices under the model of client and server. In the last decade, various ID-based protocols have been discussed, but some of them have several flaws. To address the security problems found in the key exchange protocol designed by Hassan et al., we introduce a new protocol named iHEEL protocol, a new key exchange and authentication protocol in client-server environment. Our new protocol is proved to be secure under the random oracle model and computational Diffie-Hellman assumption. Finally, iHEEL protocol is compared with several preceding protocols in terms of security properties and communication cost, which is measured by different data volumes.
