We investigate the prospects of detecting gravitational waves from coalescing massive black hole binaries in the Universe with the TianQin observatory, a space-based gravitational wave interferometer proposed to be launched in the 2030s. To frame the scientific scope of the mission, in this paper, we carry out a preliminary estimation of the signal-to-noise ratio, detection rate, and parameter estimation precision of massive black hole binaries detectable by TianQin. In order to make our results as robust as possible, we consider several models of the growth history of massive black holes, exploring the effect of some key astrophysical prescriptions as well as the impact of the employed computational methods. In the most optimistic model, TianQin can detect as many as approximately 60 mergers per year. If TianQin detects a merger at redshift of 15, it will be capable of estimating its luminosity distance to within an accuracy of 10%; for a nearby event at redshift approximately 2, TianQin can issue early warnings 24 hours before coalescence, with a timing accuracy of around three hours and a sky localization ability of approximately $80\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{deg}}^{2}$, thus enabling multimessenger observations.

Science with the TianQin observatory: Preliminary results on massive black hole binaries

We use numerical simulation to investigate the triggering of starbursts in merging disk galaxies. The properties of the merger-driven starbursts are sensitive to the structure of the progenitor galaxies; specifically, to the amount of material in a dense central bulge. Galaxies without bulges develop bars shortly after their first close passage, driving significant gas inflow and subsequent starbursts in the centers of the galaxies. These starbursts significantly deplete the star-forming gas, so that only relatively weak starbursts arise during the final merger. By contrast, models of galaxies with central bulges show that a bulge acts to stabilize the galaxies against inflow and starbursts until the galaxies actually merge. At this time, strong dissipation leads to the formation of a massive central gas mass and an ensuing star formation rate two orders of magnitude greater than that in our isolated disk models. These starbursts are very short in duration, typically $\sim$ 50 Myr, suggesting that the rarity of ultraluminous infrared galaxies is a result of their being in a very short evolutionary phase, rather than special and rare formation conditions. The fact that these mergers display many of the properties of ultraluminous infrared galaxies -- tidal features, double nuclei, massive compact gas concentrations, and extreme levels of starburst activity -- suggests that merger-driven starbursts can explain the emission from many ultraluminous infrared galaxies without an active nucleus.

Ultraluminous Starbursts in Major Mergers

ABSTRACT An enormous number of compact binary systems, spanning from stellar to supermassive levels, emit substantial gravitational waves during their final evolutionary stages, thereby creating a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). We calculate the merger rates of stellar compact binaries and massive black hole binaries using a semi-analytic galaxy formation model – Galaxy Assembly with Binary Evolution (GABE) – in a unified and self-consistent approach, followed by an estimation of the multiband SGWB contributed by those systems. We find that the amplitudes of the principal peaks of the SGWB energy density are within one order of magnitude ΩGW ∼ 10−9–10−8. This SGWB could easily be detected by the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), as well as by the planned interferometric detectors, such as the Einstein Telescope and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). The energy density of this background varies as ΩGW ∝ f2/3 in the SKA band. The shape of the SGWB spectrum in the frequency range ∼[10−4,1] Hz could allow the LISA to distinguish the black hole seed models. The amplitude of the SGWB from merging stellar binary black holes at ∼100 Hz is approximately 10 and 100 times greater than those from merging binary neutron stars and neutron-star–black-hole mergers, respectively. Note that, since the cosmic star formation rate density predicted by GABE is somewhat lower than the observational results by ∼0.2 dex at z &amp;lt; ∼2, the amplitude of the SGWB in the frequency range ∼[1, 104] Hz may be underestimated by a similar factor at most. 

Exploring the multiband gravitational wave background with a semi-analytic galaxy formation model


 We investigate emission line galaxies across cosmic time by combining the modified L-Galaxies semi-analytical galaxy formation model with the JiuTian cosmological simulation. We improve the tidal disruption model of satellite galaxies in L-Galaxies to address the time dependence problem. We utilise the public code CLOUDY to compute emission line ratios for a grid of HII region models. The emission line models assume the same initial mass function as that used to generate the spectral energy distribution of semi-analytical galaxies, ensuring a coherent treatment for modelling the full galaxy spectrum. By incorporating these emission line ratios with galaxy properties, we reproduce observed luminosity functions for Hα, Hβ, [O ii], and [O iii] in the local Universe and at high redshifts. We also find good agreement between model predictions and observations for auto-correlation and cross-correlation functions of [O ii]-selected galaxies, as well as their luminosity dependence. The bias of emission line galaxies depends on both luminosity and redshift. At lower redshifts, it remains constant with increasing luminosity up to around ∼1042.5 erg s−1 and then rises steeply for higher luminosities. The transition luminosity increases with redshift and becomes insignificant above z=1.5. Generally, galaxy bias shows an increasing trend with redshift. However, for luminous galaxies, the bias is higher at low redshifts, as the strong luminosity dependence observed at low redshifts diminishes at higher redshifts. We provide a fitting formula for the bias of emission line galaxies as a function of luminosity and redshift, which can be utilised for large-scale structure studies with future galaxy surveys.

Simulating emission line galaxies for the next generation of large-scale structure surveys

Abstract Numerous observations have shown that almost all galaxies in our Universe host supermassive black holes (SMBHs), but there is still much debate about their formation and evolutionary processes. Recently, gravitational waves (GWs) have been expected to be a new and important informative observation, in particular, in the low-frequency region by making use of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs). As an evolutionary process of the SMBHs, we revisit a dark matter (DM) halo–SMBH coevolution model based on the halo merger tree employing an ansatz for the mass relation between the DM halos and the SMBHs at z = 6. In this model, the mass of SMBHs grows through their mergers associated with the halo mergers, and hence, the evolutionary information must be stored in the GWs emitted at the mergers. We investigate the stochastic gravitational background from the coalescing SMBH binaries, which the PTAs can detect, and also the GW bursts emitted at the mergers, which can be detected by the mHz band observations such as LISA. We also discuss the possibility of probing the mass relation between the DM halos and the SMBHs at high redshift by future GW observations. 

Probing the Mass Relation between Supermassive Black Holes and Dark Matter Halos at High Redshifts by Gravitational Wave Experiments

We study the co-evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with galaxies by means of semi-analytic model (SAM) of galaxy formation based on sub-halo merger trees built from Millennium and Millennium-II simulation. We utilize the simulation results from Guo 2013 and Henriques 2015 to study two aspects of the co-evolution, \emph{i.e.} the stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background generated by SMBH merger and the SMBH/galaxy clustering. The characteristic strain amplitude of GW background predicted by Guo 2013 and Henriques 2015 models are $A_{yr^{-1}}=5.00\times10^{-16}$ and $A_{yr^{-1}}=9.42\times10^{-17}$, respectively. We find the GW amplitude is very sensitive to the galaxy merger rate. The difference in the galaxy merger rate between Guo 2013 and Henriques 2015, results in a factor $5$ deviation in the GW strain amplitude. For clusterings, we calculate the spatially isotropic two point auto- and cross-correlation functions (2PCFs) for both SMBHs and galaxies by using the mock catalogs generated from Guo 2013 model. We find that all 2PCFs have positive dependence on both SMBH and galaxy mass. And there exist a significant time evolution in 2PCFs, namely, the clustering effect is enhanced at lower redshifts. Interestingly, this result is not reported in the active galactic nuclei samples in SDSS. Our analysis also shows that, roughly, SMBHs and galaxies, with galaxy mass $10^2\sim10^3$ larger than SMBH mass, have similar pattern of clustering, which is a reflection of the co-evolution of SMBH and galaxy. Finally, we calculate the first ten multiples of the angular power spectrum of the energy density of GW background. We find the amplitude of angular power spectrum of the first ten multiples is about $10\%$ to $60\%$ of the monopole component in the whole frequency range.
