A comprehensive video retrieval system should be able to accommodate and utilize various (complementary) description data in facilitating effective retrieval. We advocate a hybrid retrieval approach by integrating a query-based (database) mechanism with content-based retrieval (CBR) functions. We describe the VideoMAP/sup +/ architecture, discuss issues related to developing such a comprehensive video database management system, and its specific language mechanism (CAROL/ST with CBR) which provides an improved expressive power than pure query-based or CBR methods currently offer. We also describe an experimental prototype being developed based on a commercial object-oriented toolkit using VC++ and Java.

Accommodating hybrid retrieval in a comprehensive video database management system

In this paper, we introduce structural join index hierarchy (SJIH) indexing mechanisms that mimic the class composition hierarchy of the complex objects to provide direct access to multimedia objects and/or their component objects. A cost model for processing the queries and maintaining the indices is developed. A heuristic algorithm is designed to select appropriate indices to efficiently process a given set of multimedia queries. Through the use of a News-on-Demand example, we show that SJIH indexing mechanisms facilitate efficient query processing in multimedia applications.

Efficient Multimedia Database Indexing Using Structural Join Index Hierarchy

In this paper, we describe our work on developing an eLearning video database system. The eLearning video database provides a temporal modeling framework for describing eLearning video data and it supports data distribution by applying vertical class partitioning techniques. Building on top of our previous work on Four Dimensional Information System (4DIS)—an object-oriented temporal modeling framework, we apply vertical class partitioning techniques onto a 4DIS eLearning video database system as a means for efficient query execution. We further describe our work on dynamic fetching of multimedia eLearning video on the Internet. A detailed cost model for query execution through vertical class partitioning is developed. Finally, we demonstrate through the use of a running example the effectiveness of our vertical class partitioning approach.

Efficient Query Execution Techniques in a 4DIS Video Database System for eLearning

In this chapter, we describe our work on developing a distributed video DBMS (database management system). The video DBMS provides a temporal modeling framework for describing video data, and it supports data distribution by applying vertical class partitioning techniques. Building on top of our previous work on Four Dimensional Information Space (4DIS), an object-oriented temporal modeling framework, we apply class partitioning techniques onto a distributed 4DIS video database system as a means for efficient query execution. A detailed cost model for query execution through vertical class partitioning is developed. The effectiveness of our class partitioning approach, in the context of the distributed 4DIS video database system, is demonstrated through the use of a running example.

Distributed temporal video DBMS using vertical class partitioning technique

How to facilitate efficient video manipulation and access in a web-based environment is becoming a popular trend for video applications. In this paper, we present a web-oriented video management and application processing system, based on our previous work on multimedia database and content-based retrieval. In particular, we extend the VideoMAP architecture with specific web-oriented mechanisms, which include: (1) Concurrency control facilities for the editing of video data among different types of users, such as Video Administrator, Video Producer, Video Editor, and Video Query Client; different users are assigned various priority levels for different operations on the database. (2) Versatile video retrieval mechanism which employs a hybrid approach by integrating a query-based (database) mechanism with content- based retrieval (CBR) functions; its specific language (CAROL/ST with CBR) supports spatio-temporal semantics of video objects, and also offers an improved mechanism to describe visual content of videos by content-based analysis method. (3) Query profiling database which records the `histories' of various clients' query activities; such profiles can be used to provide the default query template when a similar query is encountered by the same kind of users. An experimental prototype system is being developed based on the existing VideoMAP prototype system, using Java and VC++ on the PC platform.

Development of a web-based video management and application processing system

This paper presents the architecture of an experimental Web-based video database management system, which can accommodate full range of activities conducted by various types of users. Besides supporting the basic concurrency control for the video editing among different users, our system provides various kind of profiles containing knowledge information and activity models which are useful for annotating abstracted information into the video data and for processing video queries. We also describe the user interface facilities from the perspective of sample user interactions. This system is being built based on our earlier work of developing a fully-fledged video database management system using extended object-oriented concepts and techniques.
