Graphene aerogels (GAs) offer a distinctive combination of high porosity, low density, large specific surface area and high compressibility, which make it grab considerable attention in various applications, in particular for high performance electromagnetic wave attenuation. The internal porous structure and three-dimensional (3D) network of GAs solve the phenomenon of graphene sheet layer agglomeration, high conductivity and impedance mismatch in two-dimensional graphene, which is conducive to the improvement of microwave absorption performance. In addition, GAs incorporate other lossy materials as a framework have been widely studied to achieve more efficient microwave absorption. Herein, the latest advances in the synthetic strategies and structural characteristics of graphene-based materials are reviewed. Furthermore, we summarized recent advances in graphene-based aerogels as microwave absorbing materials, including pure GAs and hybrid aerogels with other lossy materials. In addition, we also highlighted the multifunctional microwave absorbing materials. On this basis, we summarized the research status of graphene-based microwave absorbing aerogels and put forward the challenges and outlook of graphene-based microwave absorbing aerogels.

A review of three-dimensional graphene-based aerogels: Synthesis, structure and application for microwave absorption

Plasmonic photocatalysis has emerged as a prominent and growing field. It enables the efficient use of sunlight as an abundant and renewable energy source to drive a myriad of chemical reactions. For instance, plasmonic photocatalysis in materials comprising TiO2 and plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) enables effective charge carrier separation and the tuning of optical response to longer wavelength regions (visible and near infrared). In fact, TiO2 -based materials and plasmonic effects are at the forefront of heterogeneous photocatalysis, having applications in energy conversion, production of liquid fuels, wastewater treatment, nitrogen fixation, and organic synthesis. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the fundamentals and to provide the guidelines for future work in the field of TiO2 -based plasmonic photocatalysis comprising the above-mentioned applications. The concepts and state-of-the-art description of important parameters including the formation of Schottky junctions, hot electron generation and transfer, near field electromagnetic enhancement, plasmon resonance energy transfer, scattering, and photothermal heating effects have been covered in this review. Synthetic approaches and the effect of various physicochemical parameters in plasmon-mediated TiO2 -based materials on performances are discussed. It is envisioned that this review may inspire and provide insights into the rational development of the next generation of TiO2 -based plasmonic photocatalysts with target performances and enhanced selectivities.

Recent Advances in Plasmonic Photocatalysis Based on TiO2 and Noble Metal Nanoparticles for Energy Conversion, Environmental Remediation, and Organic Synthesis.

Facile synthesis of Z-scheme composite of TiO2 nanorod/g-C3N4 nanosheet efficient for photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin

The approach of this timely review considers the current literature that is focused on the interface nanostructure/cell-wall microorganism to understand the annihilation mechanism. Morphological studies use optical and electronic microscopes to determine the physical damage on the cell-wall and the possible cell lysis that confirms the viability and microorganism death. The key parameters of the tailoring the surface of the photoactive nanostructures such as the metal functionalization with bacteriostatic properties, hydrophilicity, textural porosity, morphology and the formation of heterojunction systems, can achieve the effective eradication of the microorganisms under natural conditions, ranging from practical to applications in environment, agriculture, and so on. However, to our knowledge, a comprehensive review of the microorganism/nanomaterial interface approach has rarely been conducted. The final remarks point the ideal photocatalytic way for the effective prevention/eradication of microorganisms, considering the resistance that the microorganism could develop without the appropriate regulatory aspects for human and ecosystem safety.

An approach to the photocatalytic mechanism in the TiO2-nanomaterials microorganism interface for the control of infectious processes.

Noble metal nanoparticles have been of tremendous interest due to their intriguing size- and shape-dependent plasmonic and catalytic properties. Combining tunable plasmon resonances with superior catalytic activities on the same metallic nanoparticle, however, has long been challenging because nanoplasmonics and nanocatalysis typically require nanoparticles in two drastically different size regimes. Here, we demonstrate that creation of high-index facets on subwavelength metallic nanoparticles provides a unique approach to the integration of desired plasmonic and catalytic properties on the same nanoparticle. Through site-selective surface etching of metallic nanocuboids whose surfaces are dominated by low-index facets, we have controllably fabricated nanorice and nanodumbbell particles, which exhibit drastically enhanced catalytic activities arising from the catalytically active high-index facets abundant on the particle surfaces. The nanorice and nanodumbbell particles also possess appealing tunable plasmonic properties that allow us to gain quantitative insights into nanoparticle-catalyzed reactions with unprecedented sensitivity and detail through time-resolved plasmon-enhanced spectroscopic measurements.

Bioinspired photocatalytic ZnO/Au nanopillar-modified surface for enhanced antibacterial and antiadhesive property

A new battle line is drawn where antibiotic misuse and mismanagement have made treatment of bacterial infection a thorny issue. It is highly desirable to develop active antibacterial materials for bacterial control and destruction without drug resistance. A large amount of effort has been devoted to transition metal oxide and chalcogenide (TMO&C) nanomaterials as possible candidates owing to their unconventional physiochemical, electronic and optical properties and feasibility of functional architecture assembly. This review expounds multiple TMO&C-based strategies to combat pathogens, opening up new possibilities for the design of simple, yet highly effective systems that are crucial for antimicrobial treatment. A special emphasis is placed on the multiple mechanisms of these nanoagents, including mechanical rupture, photocatalytic/photothermal activity, Fenton-type reaction, nanozyme-assisted effect, released metal ions and the synergistic action of TMO&C in combination with other antibacterial agents. The applications of TMO&C nanomaterials mostly in air/water purification and wound healing along with their bactericidal activities and mechanisms are also described. Finally, the contemporary challenges and trends in the development of TMO&C-based antibacterial strategies are proposed.

Transition metal oxide and chalcogenide-based nanomaterials for antibacterial activities: an overview

Bio-inspired hierarchical assembly of Au/ZnO decorated carbonized spinach leaves with enhanced photocatalysis performance

The invention provides a composite nanoparticle photocatalyst with the Au-TiO2 thorny heterostructure and a preparation method thereof, and belongs to the technical field of semi-conductor photocatalysts. Compared with the methods that TiO2 grows on well-prepared Au nanoparticles serving as seeds or Au nanoparticles are precipitated on a TiO2 material through chemical reduction, the preparation method of the composite nanoparticle photocatalyst effectively avoids the situations that a surface active agent is utilized to stabilize the Au nanoparticles and using of a chemical reducing agent, andmakes Au be tightly contacted with TiO2. The preparation method is beneficial for improvement of the preparation repeatability of the composite nanoparticle photocatalyst with the Au-TiO2 thorny heterostructure and the catalysis efficiency and stability thereof when serving as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst. A test result proves that the visible light (lambda 420nm) catalysis effect and the sterilizing effect of the catalyst are obviously improved than commercialized TiO2 (P25). The composite nanoparticle photocatalyst has the advantages that the preparation method is simple, the repeatability is good, large-scale production can be implemented, and has the good application prospect in the fields of photocatalytical degradation of environmental pollutants, sterilization, solar cells and solar hydrogen production.

Composite nanoparticle photocatalyst with Au-TiO2 thorny heterostructure and preparation method thereof

The invention discloses a biomimetic plant leaf-shaped Au/ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst and a preparation method thereof, and belongs to the technical field of semiconductor photocatalysts. According to the method, firstly, biomimetic plant leaf-shaped ZnO is prepared, then by adopting a HAuCl4 photo-reduction method, Au nano particles are loaded on the ZnO surface, and then the photocatalyst is obtained. The method has the advantages that equipment is simple, conditions are mild, adopted chemical agents are cheap and easy to get, the repeatability is good, and large-scale production is feasible; the prepared biomimetic plant leaf-shaped Au/ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst well copies the plant leaf structure and morphology, and in the solar spectrum range, compared with other heterojunctions which do not have the plant leaf morphology, the biomimetic plant leaf-shaped Au/ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst shows higher light trapping capability; experiment results show that as a semiconductor photocatalyst, the catalytic effect of the biomimetic plant leaf-shaped Au/ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst under simulated sunlight (200-1100 nm) is significantly improved compared with those of the Au/ZnO heterojunctions which do not have the plant leaf morphology, and the biomimetic plant leaf-shaped Au/ZnO heterojunction photocatalyst has better effects in the aspects of photocatalytic degradation of multiple kinds of organic pollutants and photovoltaic conversion.
