Failure Criteria and Mechanical Properties of Recycled Concrete with Different Replacement Ratios of Coarse Aggregates under Multiaxial Compression

By using a rock true triaxial apparatus hydraulic servo machine, biaxial loading experiments including biaxial compression-compression and biaxial compression-tension with fixed lateral loading on plain concretes were conducted and the stress-strain curves of plain concrete under various stress ratios were obtained. After determining the peak principal stress, the damage modes of plain concrete under various stress ratios were analyzed and the law of strength in the principal stress direction was studied as well. The experimental findings show that, under the fixed lateral loading, the failure modes of plain concrete under biaxial compression-compression and biaxial compression-tension are very similar to those under the equal proportional loading, but with higher amplitude of variation. In this paper, Kupfer’s classical failure criterion was applied to verify the experimental data and the predicted biaxial loading on plain concrete under fixed lateral loading and was regarded as relatively conservative. Meantime, based on Kupfer’s failure criterion and octahedral stress space, two different failure criteria had been proposed and verified. The results show that the proposed failure criteria have good applicability. The failure mechanism under fixed lateral loading was discussed and compared with that under the equal proportional loading method. This research is meaningful to plain concrete engineering application and calculation.

Experimental Analysis and Failure Criterion of Plain Concrete Subjected to Biaxial Loading under Fixed Lateral Loading

Biaxial tension-compression experiments of concrete of five stress ratios at high temperatures were carried out using the large static-dynamic triaxial test system in the State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering, Dalian University of Technology. The stress ratios σ
 1/σ
 3 are 0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75. The temperatures are 20°C, 200°C, 300°C, 500°C, 600°C. The mechanical behavior of concrete under biaxial tension-compression at high temperatures is analyzed. It is found that both the tensile strength and strain diminished with the increase in temperature under each stress ratio. Based on the test results, the relationship between tensile strengths and stress ratios and temperature is proposed. In addition, the failure criterion of concrete under biaxial stress state of tension-compression at high temperatures is established.

Biaxial tensile-compressive experiment of concrete at high temperatures

There are only few experimental studies on biaxial compressive behavior f concrete subjected to non-proportional loading.Biaxial compressive tests on plain concrete specimens under normal temperature and after exposing to high temperature(200℃―600℃)were completed with four lateral stresses(0、0.2 fc、0.4 fc、0.6 fc) with non-proportional load using a large static-dynamic triaxial test system for concrete.The strength and strain of concrete were obtained.Through the results,the biaxial compressive strength and deformation characteristics of concrete confined by lateral stress after exposing to different temperatures are studied in a systematic way.Based on the tests,the failure criterion of concrete subjected to non-proportional biaxial compressive stress is established in the octahedral stress space.The conclusions can provide a testing and theoretical basis for complex concrete design and analysis.

Biaxial compressive behavior of concrete subjected to non-proportional loading after exposing to high temperature

The tests of concrete specimens under 5 biaxial compressive stress states suffering 0,25,50 and 75 cycles of freezing and thawing were completed using a large static-dynamic triaxial test system for concrete in the State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering, Dalian University of Technology. The strength of concrete and the curve of stress-strain were measured. The microstructure of concrete after different freezing and thawing cycles were inspected using electron microscope. The mechanical properties, such as biaxial compressive strength and deformation under different proportional loadings are analysed based on the experimental results. Failure criterion of concrete under the biaxial compressive stresses after cyclic freezing and thawing is established in stress space. It serves as a reference for the design and analysis of dams, concrete roads, bridges which are subjected to biaxial compressive load in northern cold region.
