How scientific researchers form green innovation behavior: An empirical analysis of China's enterprises

To develop more effective ethics education for cross-cultural and international engineering, a study was conducted to determine what Chinese engineering students have learned and think about ethics. Recent research shows traditional approaches to ethics education are potentially ineffective, but also points towards ways of improving ethical behaviors. China is the world's most populous country, graduating and employing the highest number of STEM majors, although little empirical research exists about the ethical knowledge and perspectives of Chinese engineering students. When compared to engineering students in the US, Chinese engineering students (1) received less ethics education; (2) the form of the education they did receive stressed virtue ethics or the development of moral character; (3) conceive of ethics in contradistinction to the law, where ethics deals with matters of right and wrong not covered by legality. Based on these findings and research in moral psychology and behavioral ethics, recommendations are made for improving engineering ethics education both in China and abroad.

Clancy is a lecturer in engineering ethics and philosophy at the University of MichiganShanghai Jiao Tong Joint Institute, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and has acted as a long-term educational, setting up a course and writing a corresponding textbook with Heinz Luegenbiehl on global moral issues for engineers. His research and teaching interests include engineering ethics, philosophy of technology, Chinese philosophy, political philosophy, and science, technology, and society studies. Rockwell completed his PhD at Purdue University, West Lafayette, MA at the Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven, Belgium, and BA at Fordham University, New York.

Which Factors are Correlated with Engineering Students' Expectations of Ethical Issues?

ABSTRACT This paper comparatively studies people’s opinions on AI privacy between the US and China. Based on data collected from Twitter and Weibo, we perform text clustering and content analysis to classify opinion types and analyze the symptoms of opinion polarization and drivers by regression analysis. Results show that US people express more concerns about AI privacy, focusing more on privacy disclosure by AI applications. In contrast, Chinese people are more optimistic about AI’s role in promoting privacy protection. Security, economics, and application are driving factors leading to the polarization of the US people, while technologies and algorithms influence the polarization of Chinese people. This study offers methodological guidance for examining the relationship between AI and user privacy. It also guides the government agencies and other practitioners in developing the policies on AI regulations for privacy protection.

Reflecting on the philosophy of technology in China in the form of five questions

In premodern China, the traditional Chinese thinking pattern had a strong influence on the practice of engineering and on social development. This thinking pattern is still both influential and valuable today. In this chapter, we characterize the traditional thinking pattern from four perspectives: (1) at the ontological level, it presents itself as an organic entity; (2) at the epistemological level, it relies on intuitional experience; (3) at the methodological level, it highlights the notions of ­correlation and flexibility; and finally (4) at the ethical level, it advocates the morality of yi dao yu shu (mastering technique with dao) and pursues the harmony between a number of related contextual factors. Moreover, in this chapter, we indicate the influence of the traditional thinking pattern upon the modern practice of engineering in terms of planning, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance. Finally, we argue the case that the traditional thinking pattern can be recommended as a method to improve the professionalization of engineering practice, the quality of engineering education, and the development of qualified engineers.
