The latest developments in zeolite membranes are reviewed, with an emphasis on the synthesis techniques, including seed assembly and secondary growth methods. This review also discusses the current industrial applications of zeolite membranes, the feasibility of their use in membrane reactors and their hydrothermal stability. Finally, zeolite membranes are compared with metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes and the latest advancements in MOF and mixed matrix membranes are highlighted.

Zeolite membranes – a review and comparison with MOFs

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great potential in gas storage and separation, energy storage and conversion, vapor sensing, and catalysis. Nevertheless, rare attention has been paid to their anticorrosion performances. At present, substantial hydrophobic and water stable MOFs (like ZIF-8), which are potentially favorable for their applications in anticorrosion industry, have been successfully designed and prepared. In this study, a facile ligand-assisted conversion strategy was employed to fully convert ZnAl-CO3 layered double hydroxide (LDH) precursor buffer layers to well intergrown ZIF-8 coatings. DC Polarization tests indicated that prepared ZIF-8 coatings showed the corrosive current 4 orders of magnitude lower than that of bare Al substrates, demonstrating that MOF materials were superb candidates for high-performance anticorrosion coatings.

Insights into the Use of Metal-Organic Framework As High-Performance Anticorrosion Coatings.

Abstract.Molecular sieves, such as nanoporous AlPO4-5, can host a wide variety of laser active dyes. We embeded pyridine-2 molecules as a representative of a commercially available dye which fits into the channel pores of the host matrix. Many efficient dye molecules, such as rhodamines, do not fit into the pores. But modifying the structure of the dyes to appear like the used templates allows us to increase the amount of encapsulated dyes. The properties of resulting microlasers depend on size and shape of the microresonators, and we discuss a model for microscopic hexagonal ring resonators. In terms of pump needed to reach lasing threshold molecular sieve microlasers are comparable to VCSELs. For dyes that fit into the pores we observed a partial regeneration of photo-induced damage.

Hexagonal microlasers based on organic dyes in nonoporous crystals

Anti-corrosive coatings based on layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been considered as promising alternatives to conventional chromate-containing conversion coatings. Among various LDHs, carbonate-intercalated LDH coatings with a c-axis preferred orientation should be the optimum structure for protecting metals against corrosion. Herein we successfully prepared NiAl–CO3 LDH coatings on aluminium plates in one step. Particularly it was found that CO2 dissolved in the precursor solution exerted great influence on the microstructure and anti-corrosion capacity of prepared LDH coatings. Trace amounts of CO2 in the precursor solution led to the formation of ab-oriented 7 μm-thick LDH coatings, while preferentially c-oriented LDH coatings with an average thickness of 12 μm were formed from CO2-saturated precursor solutions. A DC polarization test demonstrated that preferentially c-oriented LDH coatings exhibited much higher anti-corrosion performance than ab-oriented LDH coatings possibly due to the decreased density of mesoscopic defects. Simultaneously, CO2, the green gas, was also positively utilized.

One-pot synthesis of NiAl-CO3 LDH anti-corrosion coatings from CO2-saturated precursors

Although still in their infancy, MOF-based coatings have shown great potential for their applications as anti-corrosion coatings. Nevertheless, an in-depth investigation of the influence of morphology on their anti-corrosion performance has rarely been conducted. In this study, ZIF-8-based anti-corrosion coatings with diverse microstructures were prepared by the facile hydrothermal growth of ZnAl–NO3 LDH buffer layers followed by solvothermal treatment with ZIF-8 precursor solutions with different recipes. DC polarization tests demonstrated that the precursor solution containing only 2-methylimidazole led to the formation of ZIF-8–ZnAl–NO3 LDH composite coatings with superior anti-corrosion performances probably due to the reduced grain boundary defect density.
