Indubitably, hydrogen demonstrates sterling properties as an energy carrier and is widely anticipated as the future resource for fuels and chemicals. Herein, an updated assessment of progress recorded on the production, transportation, utilization, and storage of hydrogen is examined. Firstly, the numerous routes for the production of hydrogen from renewable and non-renewable sources are systematically demystified. Subsequently, the transportation framework for hydrogen is discussed. Moreover, the industrial application of hydrogen is elucidated and the existing hydrogen storage systems are chronologically analyzed. From the review of the literature, photocatalytic water splitting technology is the most environmentally benign method available for H2 production. Additionally, underground hydrogen storage in a geologic porous medium offers the largest and most affordable storage capacity for H2 gas. Nonetheless, the compatibility of H2 with reservoir fluid in porous media and other safety concerns has to be adequately understood to avoid preventable losses. Finally, the key research gaps were highlighted and potential areas for future research are proffered. 

Hydrogen production, transportation, utilization, and storage: Recent advances towards sustainable energy

Two coordinated metallacycles (rhomboid for M1 , hexagonal for M2 ) with selenoviologens (SeV 2+ ) pendants were synthesized via coordination-driven hierarchical self-assembly. M1/M2 with rigid and discrete metallacyclic cores showed tunable optoelectronic properties due to strong p-p stacking and push-pull electron structures. Femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) revealed that the formation of macrocyclic structure can not only enhance the stability of radical cation, but also improve the efficiency of intramolecular charge transfer and produce a long-lived charge separation state. The electrochromic performances of M1 / M2 -based devices were exhibited to show decent radical stabilization. By using M1 / M2 as the photocatalyst, the improved catalytic efficiency (> 80%) of visible-light-induced cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reactions was achieved due to the highly stable radical cations and long-lived charge separation states , which were also confirmed by fs-TA.

Hydrogen (H2) is regarded as a novel energy carrier with huge development potential, and it will be essential in future clean energy systems. Given the existing challenges in direct H2 storage and delivery, effective H2 storage carriers, such as formic acid, for on-site H2 production have received widespread attention. Recently, supported heterogeneous catalysts have made significant progress in formic acid decomposition (FAD) toward H2, to overcome the shortcomings of homogeneous catalysts' poor stability, separation difficulty, and serious pollution. Herein, we summarize the catalytic mechanism of H2 production from FAD catalyzed by heterogeneous catalysts, thoroughly discuss the optimization of FAD performance based on MSI regulation according to metal (size, composition, and atomic arrangement), support (composition, surface modification, heteroatom doping, and confinement), and treatment (heat and plasma), as well as propose a rational design and precise construction approach for efficient FAD catalytic structures according to MSI. This review improves the development of the ideal heterogeneous FAD catalysts, to meet the demand for on-site H2 production in the future green energy system.

Multifunctional solar energy conversion offers a feasible strategy to solve energy, environmental and water crises. In this contribution, a series of platinum(II) tethered chalcogenoviologens (PtL + -EV 2+ , E = S, Se, Te) is reported, which integrated the functions of photosensitizer, electron mediator and catalyst. PtL + -EV 2+ (particularly for PtL + -SeV 2+ )-based one-component solar H 2 production could be triggered not only by EDTA, but also by facultative anaerobic and aerobic bacteria relying on the simplified mechanism, along with efficient antibacterial activities. In addition, by using the real pool water, PtL + -SeV 2+ achieved multiple functions, including H 2 production, antibacterial action and acid removal, which supplied a new strategy to solve various problems in real life via a single system.

Bacteria-Triggered Solar Hydrogen Production via Platinum(II) Tethered Chalcogenoviologens.

Micro visualization has become an important means of solving colloid and interface scientific problems in enhanced oil recovery. It can establish a relationship between a series of performance evaluations of an oil-water interface under macroscopic dimensions and the actual application effect in confined space, and more truly and reliably reflect the starting and migration behavior of crude oil or emulsion in rock pores. In this article, zwitterionic surfactant alkyl sulfobetaine (ASB) and anionic extended surfactant alkyl polyoxypropylene sulfate (A145) were employed as flooding surfactants. The macroscopic properties of the surfactant solutions, such as the oil-water interfacial tension (IFT), the interfacial dilational rheology and the viscosity of crude oil emulsions, have been measured. At the same time, we link these parameters with the oil displacement effect in several visual glass models and confirm the main factors affecting the migration ability of emulsions in micro-scale pores. The experimental results show that ASB reduces the IFT through mixed adsorption with crude oil fractions. The flat arrangement of the large hydrophilic group of ASB molecules enhances the interactions between the surfactant molecules on the oil-water interface. Compared with sulfate, betaine has higher interfacial membrane strength and emulsion viscosity. A145 has a strong ability to reduce the IFT against crude oil because of the larger size effect of the PO chains at the oil side of the interface. However, the membrane strength of A145 is moderate and the emulsion does not show a viscosity-increasing effect. During the displacement process, the deformation ability of the front emulsions or oil banks is the main controlling factor of the displacement efficiency, which is determined by the membrane strength and emulsion viscosity. The strong interfacial membrane strength and the high emulsion viscosity are not conducive to the migration of droplets in pore throats and may result in low displacement efficiency.
