Fabricating battery-type electrode materials with large specific surface area and mesopores is an efficient method for enhancing the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors. This method may provide more active sites for Faradic reactions and shorten the ion-diffusion paths. In this study, the CoNi layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with the morphology of nanoflowers and nanoflakes were prepared in solutions with pH values of 7.5 (CoNi LDH-7.5) and 8.5 (CoNi LDH-8.5) via a simple sonochemical approach. These CoNi LDHs possessed large specific surface areas and favourable electrochemical properties. The CoNi LDH-7.5 delivered a specific capacity of 740.8C/g at a current density of 1 A/g, surpassing CoNi LDH-8.5 with 668.1C/g. The hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) was assembled with activated carbon as the anode and CoNi LDH as the cathode to assess its practical application potential in the field of electrochemical energy storage. The CoNi LDH-7.5//AC HSC achieved the highest energy density of 35.6 W h kg−1 at a power density of 781.1 W kg−1. In addition, both HSCs exhibited little capacity decay over 5,000 cycles at a high current load of 8 A/g. These electrochemical properties of CoNi LDHs make them promising candidates for battery-type electrode materials. The current sonochemical method is simple and can be applied to the preparation of other LDHs-based electrode materials with favourable electrochemical performance.

Metal-organic frameworks: A comprehensive review on common approaches to enhance the energy storage capacity in supercapacitor

A facile multi-step strategy was designed to synthesize core-shell Cu2O@CuS @NiCo-LDH (LDH, layered double hydroxide) composites. Initially, the Cu2O@CuS matrix material was synthesized by heat treatment and vulcanization at 25 °C, and subsequently, the desired Cu2O@CuS@NiCo-LDH composites were obtained using a hydrothermal method. A core-shell structure consisting of nanosheets uniformly grown on the cubic surface of the core–shell unit was achieved. The states and properties of nanosheet loading with different ratios of Ni and Co were investigated. and Cu2O@CuS @NiCo-LDH in supercapacitors, and a specific capacitance of 970.5 F g−1 was obtained at 1 A g−1. Density functional theory simulations provided additional confirmation of the beneficial synergistic interaction between Cu2O@CuS and NiCo-LDH. The constructed Cu2O@CuS@NiCo-LDH//activated carbon asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) also attained an energy density of 53.3 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 820 W kh−1. Additionally, the assembled ASC demonstrated extremely high stability with a capacitance retention of 85.5 % after 25,000 cycles of testing thanks to its distinct structure design. These results indicate that the Cu2O@CuS@NiCo-LDH electrode shows promise for application as an energy-storage electrode material. 

Core-shell Cu2O@CuS@NiCo layered double hydroxide composites as supercapacitor electrode materials

A composite named CoFe-S/rGO-x (where x indicates the quantity of graphene oxide (GO) added during the synthesis process) was prepared by combining self-assembly and hydrothermal methods to load CoS2/FeS nanocubes (designated as CoFe-S) onto reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets. Subsequently, this composite was utilized for the positive electrode of an asymmetric supercapacitor. The experiments indicate that CoFe-S/rGO-0.7 exhibits the best capacitive performance. CoFe-S/rGO-0.7 demonstrates an exceptionally high specific capacitance of 4474.1F g−1 at a current density of 1 A/g. The asymmetric supercapacitor, assembled using CoFe-S/rGO-0.7 and activated carbon (AC) as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively, delivers an ultra-high energy density of 107.6 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 918.2 W kg−1. Even at a power density of 8893.1 W kg−1, it maintains an energy density of 77.32 Wh kg−1. The stable structure and the introduction of sulfur vacancies contribute to the outstanding cycling stability of the CoFe-S/rGO-0.7//AC asymmetric supercapacitor. The capacitance retention rate after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles is 96.2 %. The results indicate that the sulfur-enriched CoFe-S/rGO-0.7 positive electrode material exhibits excellent energy storage and stability performance, making it a potential candidate for electrode materials in the field of supercapacitors.

The efficient development of electrocatalysts is a critical necessity in constructing urea-splitting systems that enable the production of environmentally friendly and renewable fuels. Achieving this objective entails optimizing the composition and structure of the electrocatalytic materials. Here, a straightforward synthetic strategy has been employed for designing Ni–Co bimetallic oxide with slender nanosheets architecture. Specifically, Ni–Co layered double hydroxide nanosheets are synthesized through a hydrothermal treatment, followed by the conversion of these Ni–Co-based precursors into Ni–Co bimetallic oxide slender nanosheets using a calcination method. The density of states indicates that Ni–Co bimetallic oxide can greatly enhance the conductivity compared with a single NiO for the UOR. Moreover, owing to the synergistic effect of the compositions and the unique advantages offered by the nanosheet architecture, the resulting electrocatalyst demonstrates improved performance in terms of overall urea splitting. Specifically, the Ni–Co bimetallic oxide delivers a low overpotential of 79 mV at 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 45.1 mV dec−1 and exhibits long-term durability even after extensive testing.
