The study explores the significant factors and utilization of international remittance in Bangladesh by using primary data from 84 migrant households. The study applies multiple linear regression model estimated by OLS method. The estimated results find that household size, training, skill, years at abroad and earnings significantly affect international remittance in Bangladesh. This indicates migrants remit home motivated by mixed views like, altruistic, loan repayment and exchange view. The study also finds 50.01 percent of remittance is utilized only in consumption of food purpose. The study suggests arranging training and skill enhancing programs to migrants and creating investment opportunities.

Utilization of International Remittances in Bangladesh

International remittance is now one of talking issues around the world as it has been playing a vital role in socio-economic development of the developing countries like Bangladesh since last few decades. Thus, the present study explores the impact of international remittances on household poverty and welfare in Bangladesh. To achieve this objective, the study analyses primary data collected from 360 households from Cumilla district of Bangladesh. To find out the impact of remittances on poverty, the study employs the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT) index. On the other hand, a one way ANOVA test is used to examine the impact of remittances on household welfare. The paper finds that the incidence, depth and severity of poverty among remittance recipient households is quite less than that of remittance non-recipient households. Empirically, the study finds that about 6 percent of remittance recipient households lives below the poverty line while this rate is 48 percent for non-recipient households. The study also finds that the average gross per capita expenditure of remittance receiving households is three times higher than that of non-recipient households which interprets that recipient households enjoy higher level of welfare. Thus, it is found that remittances have significant influence on household welfare. The study recommends nursing international remittances as an important tool in reducing poverty and enhancing welfare.

International Migrants’ Remittances and Kinship Networks in Nigeria: The Flip-Side Consequences

Over last few decades international remittances are playing a vital role in the socio-economic development of the developing countries like Bangladesh. Remittance contributes not only in household level but also in community and national level of a country. Although many studies have been carried out on poverty, growth, inequality, unemployment impact of remittances, impact of international remittances on education and health in Bangladesh has not been studied yet. Therefore, this study explores the impact of international remittances on education and health in Bangladesh. In achieving the objective, the study uses primary data collected from 396 households and applies both statistical and econometric methods. Firstly, the study uses statistical approach to bring to light the core scenario of education and health conditions of the households. Secondly, the study separately applies linear regression model estimated through OLS method to examine the impact of international remittances on education and health. The study finds that international remittances have negative and significant impact on education while international remittances have positive and significant on health. This paper finds that if the households receive remittance, the per capita expenditure on health may be increased by Tk. 4817.39 and the per capita expenditure on education may be decreased by Tk. 1020.67. Therefore, the study suggests government and non-government organizations nursing international remittances to improve households’ health.

The Impact of International Remittances on Education and Health in Bangladesh

It is no longer a debate that international remittance has a positive influence on economic growth as it goes into individuals to meet family needs, but what has not been settled empirically (at least in the case of Nigeria) is the end-use allocation of this resources. This study assesses the expenditure pattern of international remittances on productive assets purchase using a micro cross-sectional data obtained from 2009 World Bank‟s Migration and Remittances Survey in Nigeria. The model estimated was based on a new approach, using the bivariate probit regression equation which saw remittances and productive assets as endogenous variables determined by some observed variables. The main result is the insignificant positive effect of migrant remittances on propensity to acquire productive assets among Nigeria‟s households.

Does Diaspora Remittances Enhance Productive Asset Purchase in Host country? Evidence from Nigeria

The inflow of foreign remittances is continuously increased in Pakistan and it has been estimated that about 13186.58 $ million received in the last fiscal year [23]. The main purpose of this study was to check the impact of remittances on household welfare as well as poverty of the household in Tehsil 18 Hazari, District jhang, Punjab, Pakistan. Household expenditures were used as a proxy variable to measure the welfare of household. Primary data were collected from the 9 union councils of Tehsil 18 Hazari. The size of sample was around 280, out of which 140 migrated households while 140 were non migrated. The results derived by application of OLS and logit model, revealed that education of household head, total number of animals, monthly income and foreign remittances were beneficial for improving the welfare of household while size of the house, marital status and dependency ratio negatively affected household welfare.
