Young people in the care of the state are reported as having generally poor education and employment outcomes due to such factors as high rates of school exclusions and nonattendance; frequent placement moves with consequent school disruptions; deprived precare backgrounds; lack of co-ordination between education and child protection personnel; lack of attention to educational needs by professionals; and low expectations held by carers and caseworkers. This article examines child protection worker perspectives on young people’s transition from school to work. Caseworkers believe that, for young people in care, factors such as unstable placements; psychological and behavioural problems; inadequate vocational options; poor caseworker knowledge of available training and education; and negative perceptions of young people in care may impede them from making a successful transition from school. Research suggests that child protection caseworkers need to integrate education and work with leaving care planning, given it is vital to the future well-being of young people in care. _____________________________________________________________________

This study set out to determine which environmental factors of growth and silvicultural practices can affect the properties of Eucalyptus robusta coppice wood and also to study variability in those properties depending on the factors Hundred and thirty-five coppice logs aged 2 to 10 years were collected from five zones in the Highlands of Madagascar Wood density at 12% moisture content was measured by X-ray microdensitometry Chemical properties, such as the total extractives, Klason lignin and holocellulose contents were predicted using near infrared spectrometry prediction models The results significantly showed (p-value<0,001) that wood density (543 – 836 kg/m3), total extractives (3,1 – 9,8%) and Klason lignin content (24,6 – 35,3%) increased with age, with the opposite occurring for holocellulose (63,8 – 69,9%) Wood density also varied significantly (p-value<0,001) depending on the zones, which was not the case for chemical properties The densest woods were found at the hottest zones with less acid soils Woods were less dense in zones, charac-terized by high rainfall and a soil rich in nitrogen and organic carbon The plantation spacing, elevation of the zone and soil texture did not significantly affect wood properties

Variability in the physico-chemical properties of wood from eucalyptus robusta depending on ecological growing conditions and forestry practices: the case of smallholdings in the highlands of Madagascar.

To investigate the release and transport of heavy metal elements in the tailings of the Tonglushan Copper and Iron Mine, seven heavy metal and rare earth elements in the tailings, nearby stream sediments and soils were analyzed by ICP-MS. The results of show that the spatial distribution patterns of metal elements change gradually at both vertical and horizontal profiles in the tailings and stream sediments, and the heavy metal elements of interest correlate with each other to a certain degree. The paddy soil on the northwest edge of the tailings reservoir has been polluted obviously by Cu, Zn and Cd, which is mainly due to the succession of the paddy soil to the characteristics of the abandoned concentration plant and nearby ore bodies as revealed by REE patterns and trace element ratios. REE patterns and trace element ratios might be, to some extent, useful to explain the vertical and horizontal spatial distribution patterns of heavy metal elements.

Environmental geochemistry of heavy metal and trace elements in tailings of Tonglüshan Copper and Iron Mine, Daye, Hubei Province

The forest reserve of Sg. Betis, Lojing, Kelantan is one of the earliest plots to utilize Eucalyptus for forest rehabilitation purposes, due to the tree’s fast-growing characteristic that is able to accelerate soil restoration for degraded forest. Eucalyptus has a deep root system that can help to hold the soil and is able to reach moisture deep in the ground, in order to survive droughts. This study was conducted to determine the impact of forest rehabilitation on degraded land using Eucalyptus spp. The soil properties were determined prior to planting (October 2017) and after planting (August 2018). Soil analyses showed that there is improvement in selected soil properties after a year of planting.

The effect of the complex pollution on the releasing value of heavy metals from the tailings by the column leaching experiments of the floatation tailings or acidized tailings with simplex or multiplex aqueous solutions of different kinds of beneficiation reagents such as collectors,inhibitors and foaming agents.The results indicate that the effect of the water-solubility inhibitors on the releasing value of heavy metal is the highest in these reagents.When the tailings are acidized,the releasing value of heavy metals is increased by the form of order of magnitude and the value is higher than the one detected in the simplex reagent aqueous solution.When tailings are leached in turn by different kinds of reagent aqueous solution,the releasing value of heavy metals becomes higher and higher in complex reagent aqueous solution,but the ones in water or xanthate aqueous solution is become lower and lower.When tailings are leached continuously by complex reagent aqueous solution,the releasing value of heavy metals is much more higher than that for acidized tailings with the simplex reagent aqueous solution.It is shown that complex pollution of multi-reagents including their degradation products is the main reason that the heavy metal is released from the tailings dam.

Relationship of Complex Pollution to Heavy Metals Release and Migration from Floatation Tailings Dam

Establishment of exotic species in the natural secondary forest and Pinus kesiya forest regions is common in Lancang County, southwestern Yunnan province, but their effects on soil properties and quality have not been fully studied. This research analyzed the effects of Eucalyptus plantation on soil physical and chemical properties, and evaluated the soil quality after Eucalyptus plantation replaced natural secondary evergreen broad-leaved forest and Pinus kesiya plantation. It was found that soil porosity, soil water content, soil pH, soil organic matter, exchangeable calcium, exchangeable magnesium and microelement decreased, soil bulk density increased and soil aeration permeability became very low after establishment of Eucalyptus . However, with forest litter retained, the contents of soil N, P and K had been rising in the case of applying fertilizer at the initial stage of Eucalyptus introduction. The soil quality indexes ( SQI ) under Eucalyptus plantation were lower than those under the natural secondary evergreen broadleaved forest and Pinus kesiya plantation. The SQI of soils in Eucalyptus plantation which replaced Pinus kesiya plantation lands (SQI = 0.208) was lower than that of soils in Eucalyptus plantation which replaced natural secondary evergreen broad-leaved forest lands (SQI = 0.269). The study results showed that replacement of natural secondary evergreen broad-leaved forest and Pinus kesiya plantation by Eucalyptus plantation has changed soil properties and lowered soil quality. The secondary evergreen broad-leaved forest vegetation that restored naturally is more favorable to maintaining and improving soil quality
