Preparation and characterization of silica gel/chitosan composite for the removal of Cu(II) and Pb(II)

Silica modified calcium alginate–xanthan gum hybrid bead composites for the removal and recovery of Pb(II) from aqueous solution

Polystyrene/silica (PS/SiO2) and poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate)/SiO2 composite latex particles were prepared by surfactant-free emulsion polymerization in the presence of a poly(ethylene glycol) monomethylether methacrylate (PEGMA) macromonomer. The resulting composite particles were stabilized by the negatively charged silica particles that adhered to the surface of the latex particles. Different process parameters were investigated in order to optimize the latex stability and maximize the reaction rate. Mixing in such a surfactant-free process is of major importance and is mainly determined by the type of impeller used during the emulsification. The concentrations of PEGMA and silica particles were also optimized in order to improve the interaction between the organic and inorganic phases and ensure a good latex stability. The presence of silica particles on the polymer particle surface was found to affect radical absorption and decrease therefore the reaction rate.

Fluoride contamination of groundwater, both anthropogenic and natural, is a major problem worldwide. This investigation reports the synthesis of a new adsorbent material, Zr(IV) encapsulated silica gel/chitosan (Zr‐SGCS) composite. The silica gel/chitosan (SGCS) composite, which has a desirable defluoridation capacity (DC) of 3402 mgF − /kg, has been further chemically modified by incorporating Zr 4+ ion into SGCS composie and its DC was found to be 4,530 mgF − /kg. The suitability of Zr‐SGCS composite for the removal of fluoride was assessed by batch method and optimized various parameters viz., contact time, dosage, pH, co-ions, and temperature that influence the sorption. The fluoride sorption was explained using Freundlich, Langmuir, and D-R isotherms.
