Imaging evaluation of pediatric mediastinal masses.

Context.—Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been classically associated with 3 malignancies, Burkitt lymphoma, B-cell lymphoproliferative syndromes, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and more recently with Hodgkin disease, T-cell lymphomas, and gastric and breast carcinomas, as well as with leiomyosarcoma and leiomyoma associated with immunosuppression. Objective.—To compare EBV expression in Argentine tumor samples with those reported elsewhere, we analyzed EBV expression in an Argentine pediatric population with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and correlated these results with clinical course and outcome. Methods.—We studied EBV presence by latent membrane protein-1 protein labeling by immunohistochemistry, by in situ hybridization, and by polymerase chain reaction for Epstein-Barr–encoded RNAs (EBERs) in formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded non-Hodgkin lymphoma tissue samples (collected retrospectively) from 32 pediatric patients at Ricardo Gutierrez Children's Hospital from 1993 to 2000. Assessment of Epstein-Barr virus association with pediatric non-hodgkin lymphoma in immunocompetent and in immunocompromised patients in Argentina.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in females worldwide. Several etiological factors including environmental factors have been recognized for breast cancer. Epstein Barr virus as a viral etiological factor has been proposed. So far, several studies have investigated the relationship between development of breast cancer and Epstein Barr virus, but few have been done in Iran. The aim of this study was to determine whether there was an association between EBV infection and female breast cancer in Iran. Materials and Methods : We analyzed paraffin embedded breast tissue specimens by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) including breast cancer specimens (as case group) and breast fibroadenoma specimens (as control group). PCR was performed to amplify specific sequences of EBV. Results : From 130 cases of breast samples, 67 cases of breast cancer tissues and 41 cases of breast fibroadenoma tissues had adequate quality and quantity of DNA to detect EBV. PCR for EBV was positive in 4 invasive ductal carcinoma specimens (7.3%) and only one of the fibroadenoma specimens (2.4%). No significant association was found between EBV infection and invasive ductal carcinoma (p> 0.05). Also, patient’s age and histological grade of IDC were not correlated with EBV infection (p>0.05). Conclusion : We observed no etiologic association between EBV infection and invasive ductal carcinoma of female breast in our regions; however, further studies are required to elucidate this association.

Background: Among the eight known human herpes viruses, Epstein - Barr virus (EBV) is considered to be sexually transmissible. This study was conducted to evaluate the seroepidemiology of this infection in married and unmarried Iranian couples. Methods: In this comparative observational and cross-sectional study, 160 men and women were divided into married and unmarried groups. Serum IgG and IgM antibodies to the EBV viral capsid antigen were analyzed by Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISAs). Results: In this study 78 men and 82 women were enrolled. Ninety percent of the married and 76.2% of the unmarried women were anti-EBV IgG positive (P = 0.08), while 80% of the married and 94% of the unmarried men were antiEBV IgG positive (P = 0.052). Conclusion: Seroepidemiology of EBV is not significantly different in married vs. unmarried women and men in Iran; therefore, sexual contact may not be the primary mechanism of EBV transmission in Iran and other developing countries. Attention to other possible routes of transmission is recommended.

To evaluate clinical and biologic features of children with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) treated in Moscow, Russia, we studied 53 cases treated in the Republican Children's Hospital from 1990 to 1994. Histologic examination disclosed a predominance of the small noncleaved cell subtype (32 cases, 60%); a smaller percentage of the lymphoblastic and large-cell subtypes (14 cases, 26% and 7 cases, 13%, respectively) were identified. The frequencies of primary sites of involvement in descending order included 60% in abdomen, 19% in mediastinum, 15% in head/neck, and 4% in peripheral nodes. The majority of children presented with advanced stage disease (St. Jude stage III/IV/B-ALL, 92.5%). Of interest, 8 of 15 (53%) small noncleaved cell NHL cases examined contained Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The high frequency of EBV association in this study suggests that this virus may play a more global role in NHL pathogenesis than previously recognized.
