Magnetic flux ropes (MFRs), sets of coherently twisted magnetic field lines, are believed as core structures of various solar eruptions. Their evolution plays an important role to understand the physical mechanisms of solar eruptions, and can shed light on adverse space weather near the Earth. However, the erupting MFRs are occasionally prevented by strong overlying magnetic fields, and the MFR evolution during the descending phase in the confined cases is lacking attention. Here, we present the deformation of an erupting MFR accompanied by a confined double-peaked solar flare. The first peak corresponded to the MFR eruption in a standard flare model, and the second peak was closely associated with the flashings of an underlying sheared arcade (SA), the reversal slipping motion of the L-shaped flare ribbon, the falling of the MFR, and the shifting of top of filament threads. All results suggest that the confined MFR eruption involved in two-step magnetic reconnection presenting two distinct episodes of energy release in the flare impulsive phase, and the latter magnetic reconnection between the confined MFR, and the underlying SA caused the deformation of the MFR. It is proposed that an intergrated evolution for confined MFR eruptions can compose of three stages: the eruption, the confinement, and the deformation.

The Deformation of an Erupting Magnetic Flux Rope in a Confined Solar Flare

Abstract Recently, we have developed a tunable narrow-band imager (NBI) with high spectral resolution based on a Fabry–Pérot (FP) interferometer to observe the solar chromosphere. The NBI system is designed for imaging the Sun at the H $\alpha $ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mi>α</mml:mi> </mml:math> wavelength (6563 Å). The FP interferometer has a bandpass (FWHM) of 0.09 Å and a free spectral range (FSR) of 3.85 Å at $\lambda = 628$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mi>λ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>628</mml:mn> </mml:math> nm, working in combination with a prefilter with a bandpass of 1.6 Å and a center wavelength at 656.3 nm to achieve narrow-band imaging. We have successfully tested the NBI system on the 65-cm Educational Adaptive-optics Solar Telescope (EAST) in the Shanghai Astronomy Museum, and observed the sunspots in active region (AR) 12880 of the Sun on October 2 and 3, 2021. In this paper, we briefly present a description of the instrument, experimental observations, data processing, and the first observational results.

Fabry–Pérot Interferometer-Based Tunable Narrow-Band Imager for Solar Chromospheric Observation: First Results

The transmission spectrum of a narrow-band interference filter is crucial and highly influenced by factors such as the temperature and angle, thus requiring precise and online measurements. The traditional method of measuring the transmission spectrum of an interference filter involves the use of a spectrometer, but the accuracy of this method is limited. Moreover, placing a narrow-band interference filter inside a spectrometer hinders real-time online measurements. To address this issue, there is demand for high-precision online spectral testing methods. In response to this demand, we propose and experimentally validate a fine spectral characterization method for narrow-band interference filters. This method uses a narrow-linewidth tunable laser, achieving a spectral resolution in the MHz range for online testing. Two types of narrow-band interference filters were tested using the constructed laser spectroscopy experimental system, obtaining a transmission spectrum with a spectral resolution of 318 MHz. In comparison to spectrometer-based methods, our proposed method demonstrates higher spectral accuracy, enables online measurements, and provides more accurate measurements for special spectral interference filters. This approach has significant application value and promising development prospects.

The Educational Adaptive-optics Solar Telescope (EAST) at the Shanghai Astronomy Museum

For the public having a better understanding of solar activities, the Educational Adaptive-optics Solar Telescope (EAST) was built in July 2021 and is located at the Shanghai Astronomy Museum. The EAST consists of a 65 cm aperture solar telescope with a 177-element adaptive optics system and two-channel high resolution imaging system at the Hα and TiO bands, in addition to three full disk solar telescopes at Ca K, Hα and TiO bands equipped on the tube of the main telescope. In this paper, the configuration of the EAST is described. Its performance and on-sky observational results are presented. The EAST, to our knowledge, is the most advanced solar telescope for the popularization of science in the world. Due to its excellent performance, the data acquired by the EAST can also be used for research on solar physics and space weather prediction.
